Isolated centra of members of the Esocidae occur frequently in vertebrate microfossil localities of Late Cretaceous and early Paleocene age and are an important source of data on the early history of the family. However, morphological variation along the vertebral column can lead to incorrect interpretations of diversity if they are not recognized. To facilitate the use of centra for interpreting the diversity and distribution of esocids in Cretaceous vertebrate microfossil localities, the variation ...

Two new populations of the European mudminnow, Umbra krameri Walbaum, 1792, were encountered in Banat and Oltenia regions, south-western Romania, within 2014–2017. The mudminnows were captured with a hand net used normally for frogs. This is the first record of this species for Banat. In Oltenia U. krameri was encountered in a region where it was considered extinct. In both areas U. krameri was present in its characteristic habitats, i.e., small water bodies with dense aquatic vegetation. Umbra ...

Background. Temporal variability in fish reproductive features is influenced by environmental and spatial variations. Given the wide distribution of northern pike, Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758, in the northern hemisphere, important reproductive features such as the initiation of the spawning activity are likely to vary with latitudinal gradients. The overall goal of the presently reported study was to answer basic questions regarding the reproductive biology of the pike and to discuss changes in the ...

We address the taxonomic position of the southern European individuals of pike, performing a series of tests and comparisons from morphology, DNA taxonomy and population genetics parameters, in order to support the hypothesis that two species of pike, and not only one, exist in Europe. A strong relationship emerged between a northern genotype supported by COI, Cytb, AFLP and specific fragments, and a phenotype with round spot skin colour pattern and a large number of scales in the lateral line, ...

The habitat of the European mudminnow, Umbra krameri Walbaum, 1792, is continuously decreasing due to human intervention. The species has a “vulnerable” status according to the IUCN Red List. Thus, new information about the species is needed for conservation efforts. Minnow traps were used for capturing Umbra krameri and other small fishes in the Jieț River, Dolj County, southwestern Romania. Captured specimens of U. krameri were measured and weighed. Length–weight relations and relative condition ...
