Charlotte McCarthy, Eugene W. Nester,

The capacity of newly transformed cells of Bacillus subtilis to synthesize deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), and protein has been determined by following the kinetics of suicide after their exposure to tritiated precursors of each of these macromolecules. Competent cells, whether transformed or not, are heterogeneous with respect to DNA synthesis. About 40 to 50% are latent in DNA synthesis. This latency may persist for 2.5 to 3 hr since transformants are resistant to thymineless ...

A heat-stable, heat-activated endonuclease was found in sonic extracts of the transformable strain Bacillus subtilis 168 when the organism was grown to logarithmic phase in minimal medium. The enzyme was not present in the poorly transformable strain 23. The endonuclease was stable to 100 C for 30 min and, in a crude extract, was activated by heating at 80, 90, or 100 C. The activation caused a 5- to 10-fold increase in total units of enzyme activity. Sucrose gradient centrifugation indicated that ...

Objectives Because duration of inotropic support after left ventricular assist device implantation has been recognized as a surrogate for right ventricular dysfunction, we sought to (1) identify its preimplantation risk factors, particularly its association with preimplantation right ventricular dysfunction, and (2) assess its impact on clinical outcomes. Cell-based gene therapy to alter the myocardial tissue microenvironment has been shown to improve mechanical cardiac function, but little is known regarding its effects on arrhythmogenic risk. Clinical studies with skeletal myoblasts (SKMBs) have suggested a potential increase in arrhythmogenic risk. Therefore, we studied the functional mechanical and electrical effects of transient reestablishment of stem cell homing via transplantation of stromal-cell derived factor-1 (SDF-1)-expressing SKMBs. Eight ...

Objectives In studying cardiac surgical patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation with bipolar radiofrequency, we sought to (1) quantify the time-related prevalence of atrial fibrillation postoperatively and identify its risk factors and (2) determine time-related ablation failure and its risk factors. Methods From November 2001 to January 2004, 513 patients underwent atrial fibrillation ablation (bipolar radiofrequency alone or with cryothermy) and other cardiac operations. BackgroundIt is unknown whether pulmonary vein isolation or a complete Cox-Maze procedure is needed to ablate paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with mitral valve disease. Our objective was to assess the impact of different surgical treatments for this arrhythmia in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery.MethodsFrom July 1993 to January 2004, 152 patients underwent combined surgical treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and mitral valve disease. Ablation procedures included pulmonary ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects 30% to 50% of patients undergoing mitral valve surgery. The optimum treatment of AF in these patients is unclear. The purpose of this study was to describe initial clinical experience using a bipolar radiofrequency clamp to facilitate AF ablation in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery. From November 2001 through March 2003 a bipolar radiofrequency clamp was used to facilitate AF ablation in 108 patients undergoing mitral valve surgery. Preoperative AF was paroxysmal ...
