We discuss the mechanics of crustal normal fault-related earthquakes, and show that they represent dissipation of gravitational potential energy (graviquakes) and their magnitude increases with the involved volume (delimited by the seismogenic fault and an antithetic dilated wedge in its hangingwall), and the fault dip. The magnitude increases with the deepening of the brittle–ductile transition (BDT), which in turn enlarges the involved volume. The fault dip seems rather controlled by the static friction ...

Abstract In this paper we investigate the forces possibly active in the area of the northern Apennines by means of two-dimensional finite element modelling assuming a viscoelastic rheology. The forces included in the models are related to continental convergence between Africa and Eurasia, to negative buoyancy of the subducted Adriatic lithosphere and to positive buoyancy of anomalously hot mantle material underneath Tuscany. Model-predicted stress distribution is compared with seismotectonic data ...

We propose that the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) controls the seismic cycle. In particular, the movements detected by space geodesy record the steady state deformation in the ductile lower crust, whereas the stick-slip behavior of the brittle upper crust is constrained by its larger friction. GPS data allow analyzing the strain rate along active plate boundaries. In all tectonic settings, we propose that earthquakes primarily occur along active fault segments characterized by relative minima ...

The fault activation (fault on) interrupts the enduring fault locking (fault off) and marks the end of a seismic cycle in which the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) acts as a sort of switch. We suggest that the fluid flow rates differ during the different periods of the seismic cycle (interseismic, pre-seismic, coseismic and post-seismic) and in particular as a function of the tectonic style. Regional examples indicate that tectonic-related fluids anomalies depend on the stage of the tectonic cycle ...

The stress field at a specific location is the sum of regional stress, controlled by plate-scale tectonic processes, with local sources. Here we evaluate and discuss the different sources (from geodynamic to local scale) and the controlling factors (including the Jurassic paleogeography of the Adriatic passive margin) of present-day stress in the Adriatic Sea and Periadriatic regions of Italy using two kinds of numerical models: 3D mantle scale viscoelastic models and 2.5D lithosphere scale thin-shell ...

Carlo Doglioni, S. Barba, Eugenio Carminati, Federica Riguzzi,
We model a fault cross-cutting the brittle upper crust and the ductile lower crust. In the brittle layer the fault is assumed to have stick–slip behaviour, whereas the lower ductile crust is inferred to deform in a steady-state shear. Therefore, the brittle–ductile transition (BDT) separates two layers with different strain rates and structural styles. This contrasting behaviour determines a stress gradient at the BDT that is eventually dissipated during the earthquake. During the interseismic period, ...

Here are my reactions to your article Whom Is the 'Invisible' Not Visible? (TDR 32, no. I:95-Io6) concerning the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) Congress on The Female Role as Represented on the Stage in Various Cultures, Holstebro, Denmark, 17-22 September 1986. In our culture, knowledge of the actor has often been blocked by the presumption of knowledge. Critics, theatrologists, theoreticians, and even philosophers such as Hegel and Sartre have interpreted the cultural and aesthetic ...

The growth of single crystal β‐silicon nitride fibers (see Figure) several millimeters long through the application of self‐propagating high‐temperature synthesis is demonstrated. Advantages include the igh purity of the fibers obtained, the fact that the fibers are stable up to 2000°C, and the low cost of the SHS process magnified image .
