We have recently demonstrated that remote ischemic preconditioning reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury in animal models. The mechanisms by which the remote ischemic preconditioning stimulus exerts its effect remain to be fully defined, and its effect on myocardial gene expression is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that remote ischemic preconditioning modifies myocardial gene expression immediately after the remote ischemic preconditioning stimulus (early phase) and 24 hours later (late phase).Twenty ...

Comparative behavioural studies help reconstruct the phylogeny of closely related species. In that respect, the serows Capricornis spp. occupy an important position as they have been assumed to be the closest forms to the ancestors of Caprinae. In spite of that, information on the behavioural repertoire of the mainland serow Capricornis sumatraensis is exceedingly poor. In this paper, we report data on the activity rhythms and social behaviour of rutting mainland serows in captivity (Central Thailand, ...

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is a multiple malformation, neurodevelopmental disorder of cholesterol metabolism caused by mutations in 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase. Corpus callosum (CC) malformations and developmental delay are common, but the relation between the two has not been evaluated. This study hypothesizes shorter callosal length and smaller area correlate with higher serum 7-dehydrocholesterol and increased severity of neurodevelopmental delay in SLOS.

Niemann-Pick Disease, type C1 (NPC1) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cholesterol sequestration within late endosomes and lysosomes, for which no reliable imaging marker exists for prognostication and management. Cerebellar volume deficits are found to correlate with disease severity and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the corpus callosum and brainstem, which has shown that microstructural disorganization is associated with NPC1 severity. This study investigates ...

Background Niemann-Pick disease type C1 is a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder. Without a highly effective treatment, biomarkers of severity would be beneficial for prognostication and testing new interventions. While supporting data come from animal or in vitro studies, little is known about TLR5 and TLR7 expression in human asthmatic airways. Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) is a transcription factor involved in cell transformation, proliferation, and carcinogenesis that can be up-regulated by RAS mutations. However, controversy persists as to whether it functions as a tumor suppressor or as an oncogene. Because KRAS is frequently mutated in pancreatic cancer, we investigated the regulation of KLF5 in this cancer entity. Our results show that KLF5 is overexpressed in pancreatic cancer cells and exceeds KLF5 expression of KRAS-mutated colon ...

In contrast to hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) to β-lactam antibiotics in children, studies about HSR to non-β-lactam antibiotics (NBLAs) such as sulfonamides, macrolides, quinolones, and antituberculosis agents are scarce, and information is generally limited to case reports. The aim of this extensive review was to summarize our present knowledge on clinical characteristics, evaluation, and management of HSR to NBLAs in children based on the literature published between 1980 and 2013. NBLAs have ...

Disentangling the dynamics of electrons and nuclei during nonadiabatic molecular transformations remains a considerable experimental challenge. Here we have investigated photoinduced electron transfer dynamics following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1- ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe K{\alpha} and K\b{eta} X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering ( ...

ninges. Analyses of the cerebrospinal fl uid were normal including cytology. Multiple lytic lesions of the cranium were also found. A computerized tomography (CT) scan confi rmed the erosion of the left petrous apex as well as multiple bone lesions. Full examination of the patient’s blood yielded normal results. Mammography showed only fi brocystic breast disease. A CT scan did not reveal metastases of malignancy into the abdomen or chest. Pelvis bone marrow biopsy revealed carcinoma cells that were ...

During the past decade, several urinary biomarker tests (UBTs) for bladder cancer have been developed and made commercially available. However, none of these is recommended by international guidelines so far. To assess the diagnostic estimates of novel commercially available UBTs for diagnosis and surveillance of non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) using diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) and network meta-analysis (NMA). PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched up to April 2021 to identify ...

A large part of chemodiversity of plant triterpenes is due to the modification of their side chains. Reduction or isomerization of double bonds in the side chains is often an important step for the diversification of triterpenes, although the enzymes involved are not fully understood. Withanolides are a large group of structurally diverse C28 steroidal lactones derived from 24-methylenecholesterol. These compounds are found in the Indian medicinal plant Withania somnifera, also known as ashwagandha, ...
