Summary Background Pooled analyses of previous randomised studies have suggested that very early treatment with glyceryl trinitrate (also known as nitroglycerin) improves functional outcome in patients with acute ischaemic stroke or intracerebral haemorrhage, but this finding was not confirmed in a more recent trial (RIGHT-2). We aimed to assess whether patients with presumed acute stroke benefit from glyceryl tr initrate started within 3 h after symptom onset. Methods MR ASAP was a phase 3, randomised, ...

It is generally assumed that supermarkets promote unhealthy foods more heavily than healthy foods. Promotional flyers could be an effective tool for encouraging healthier food choices; however, there is a lack of good-quality evidence on this topic. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the proportions of healthy and unhealthy foods on promotion in Dutch supermarket flyers. Supermarket food promotions were assessed using the weekly promotional flyers of four major Dutch supermarkets ...

ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteases) are members of the metzincin superfamily of metalloproteases. Among integrins binding to disintegrin domains of ADAMs are α9β1 and αvβ3, and they bind in an RGD-independent and an RGD-dependent manner, respectively. Human ADAM15 is the only ADAM with the RGD motif in the disintegrin domain. Thus, both integrin α9β1 and αvβ3 recognize the ADAM15 disintegrin domain. We determined how these integrins recognize the ADAM15 disintegrin domain by mutational analysis. ...

In Burundi, the annual incidence of obstetric fistula is estimated to be 0.2-0.5% of all deliveries, with 1000–2000 new cases per year. Despite this relatively high incidence, national capacity for identifying and managing obstetric fistula is very limited. Thus, in July 2010, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) set up a specialised Obstetric Fistula Centre in Gitega (Gitega Fistula Centre, GFC), the only permanent referral centre for obstetric fistula in Burundi. A comprehensive model of care is offered ...

HIV-1 is one of the fastest evolving pathogens, and is distinguished by geographic and genetic variants that have been classified into different subtypes and circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). Early in infection the primary coreceptor is CCR5, but during disease course CXCR4-using HIV-1 populations may emerge. This has been correlated with accelerated disease progression in HIV-1 subtype B. Basic knowledge of HIV-1 coreceptor tropism is important due to the recent introduction of coreceptor antagonists ...

Abstract Background Despite evidence of a quite large beneficial effect of endovascular treatment (EVT) for ischemic stroke caused by anterior circulation large vessel occlusion, many patients do not recover even after complete recanalization. To some extent, this may be attributable to incomplete microvascular reperfusion, which can possibly be improved by antiplatelet agents and heparin. It is unknown whether periprocedural antithrombotic medication in patients treated with EVT improves functional ...

Cellular immunotherapy has proven to be effective in the treatment of hematological cancers by donor lymphocyte infusion after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and more recently by targeted therapy with chimeric antigen or T-cell receptor-engineered T cells. However, dependent on the tissue distribution of the antigens that are targeted, anti-tumor responses can be accompanied by undesired side effects. Therefore, detailed tissue distribution analysis is essential to estimate potential ...

Ultra-pure short ragweed pollen allergen Ra5 (5,000 mol wt) was used to investigate the relationship between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type and IgE and IgG antibody (Ab) responses to Ra5 in two groups of Caucasian subjects, totaling 447 people. Using highly sensitive radioimmunoassay procedures to measure serum IgE and IgG Ab, qualitative responses to Ra5 in both groups were found to be strongly associated with HLA-Dw2 (P less than 0.0001). For example, 95% of 38 people with IgE Ab vs. 22% of 139 ...
