Visual stimuli may be selected for priority at different stages within the processing stream, depending on how motivationally relevant they are to the perceiver. Here we examine the extent to which individual differences in motivational relevance of task-irrelevant images (spider, crash, baby, food and neutral) guide eye-movements to a simple "follow the cross" task in 96 participants. We found affective images vs. neutral images to be generally more distracting, as shown by faster first saccade latencies ...

Abstract Background In criminal investigations, uncooperative witnesses might deny knowing a perpetrator, the location of a murder scene or knowledge of a weapon. We sought to identify markers of recognition in eye fixations and confidence judgments whilst participants told the truth and lied about recognising faces (Experiment 1) and scenes and objects (Experiment 2) that varied in familiarity. To detect recognition we calculated effect size differences in markers of recognition between familiar ...

Eye spy: A FokI based aptamer–DNAzyme biosensor, in which the aptamer is used as the single input device and the DNAzyme as the device for the single output detection, is presented. Furthermore, this assay system is shown to be a sensitive and selective system, suitable for colorimetric and visual operation by the naked eye. The limit of detection (LOD) of 2 μM is obtained for the adenosine assay.

Jill A. Dosso, Michelle Huynh, Alan Kingstone,

Looking at other people allows us to collect information about them, but it can also reveal our attentional state when we would rather conceal it. We report that individuals spontaneously employ sustained covert monitoring, rather than direct looking, when evaluating the actions of a live stranger. In contrast, individuals look directly at the actions of a stranger on video. We argue that the ability to secretly monitor live others without executing a look towards them is an important process that ...

Emma Spence,

Drawing upon a wider ethnographic study of superrich lifestyle mobilities, I reflect upon my experiences of working as an assistant within a yacht brokerage during a superyacht sales show in West Palm Beach, Florida. Specifically, I examine the role of dress and appearance in guiding (and at times misguiding) my identification of potential superrich clients during the yacht show. In turn I outline the four-step process utilized by yacht brokers both to qualify the wealth status of a potential client ...

Avinash R. Vaidya, Chenshuo Jin, Lesley K. Fellows,

Successful social interaction requires recognizing subtle changes in the mental states of others. Deficits in emotion recognition are found in several neurological and psychiatric illnesses, and are often marked by disturbances in gaze patterns to faces, typically interpreted as a failure to fixate on emotionally informative facial features. However, there has been very little research on how fixations inform emotion recognition in healthy people. Here, we asked whether fixations predicted detection ...

Social media users are frequently exposed to alcohol images on Instagram, which in turn influences their own alcohol behaviors. Yet, it is unclear what factors drive attention to alcohol cues. In an eye-tracking study (N = 108; Mage = 16.54), we examined adolescents' attention to Instagram Stories depending on: (a) the type of beverage depicted (beer vs water), (b) the character-product interaction portrayed (CPI: peers in images shown consuming [high CPI] vs holding beverages [low CPI]) and, (c) participant' ...

Bianca Biebl, Klaus Bengler,

Drivers with visual field loss show a heterogeneous driving performance due to the varying ability to compensate for their perceptual deficits. This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the factors that determine the development of adaptive scanning strategies. The application of the Saliency-Effort-Expectancy-Value (SEEV) model to the use case of homonymous hemianopia in intersections indicates that a lack of guidance and a demand for increased gaze movements in the blind visual field aggravates ...

Ina Thome, Daniela Michelle Hohmann, Kristin M. Zimmermann, Marie L. Smith, Roman Kessler, Andreas Jansen,

The most basic aspect of face perception is simply detecting the presence of a face, which requires the extraction of features that it has in common with other faces. Putatively, it is caused by matching high-dimensional sensory input with internal face templates, achieved through a top-down mediated coupling between prefrontal regions and brain areas in the occipito-temporal cortex ("core system of face perception"). Illusory face detection tasks can be used to study these top-down influences. In ...
