A Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.)

The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and ...

Abstract Cortical thickness, surface area and volumes vary with age and cognitive function, and in neurological and psychiatric diseases. Here we report heritability, genetic correlations and genome-wide associations of these cortical measures across the whole cortex, and in 34 anatomically predefined regions. Our discovery sample comprises 22,824 individuals from 20 cohorts within the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium and the UK Biobank. We identify ...

Therapeutic approach for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients has undergone a revolutionary change with the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which improved overall survival and quality of life. Optimal therapy adherence has become of paramount importance to maximize the benefits in the long-term outcome. Several evidences have been reported that personal factors, such as social support, psychological and subjective perceptions about the drug used and the future, could influence adherence. ...

Patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer infiltrating the left atrium (LA) or the intrapericardial base of the pulmonary veins (PVs) are generally not considered good candidates for surgery because of the poor long-term survival. In the last 10 years, 31 consecutive patients with non-small cell lung cancer directly invading the LA or the intrapericardial base of the PVs underwent surgery. Pneumonectomy was the operation performed most frequently. In-hospital mortality was 9.7% and ...

The association between DTNBP1 genotype and cognitive abilities was investigated in three population samples (1054 Scottish, 1806 Australian and 745 English) of varying age. There was evidence in each of the cohorts for association (P < 0.05) to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes previously shown to relate to cognition. By comparison with previous findings, these associations included measures of memory, and there was at best equivocal evidence of association with general cognitive ...

Intraosseous mandibular artero-venous malformations (AVMs) are rare (5% of all vascular malformations) but of great clinical importance. They can lead to dental emergencies and may cause disfigurement, morbidity, and even death. We describe the radiological appearance and the endovascular treatment of a rare high-flow vascular malformation of the mandibular body resembling a dental cyst, embolized by Guglielmi's detachable coils (GDC).

Abstract The techno-functional approach has been employed to better understand one of the more relevant artifact types generally found in Lower Palaeolithic sites: so-called small tools. Particularly, some Italian sites, such as Ficoncella, Isernia and others, have been the subject of specialized studies which provide evidence of an unexpected complexity of technical behaviours mainly related to highly specialized functional properties of the small tools. In this paper, we aim to enhance the debate ...

Since 2005, the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) has published updated checklists of Brazilian birds almost every year. Herein, we present a completely new and annotated version of our checklist. For the first time, we list all bird subspecies known from Brazil that are currently accepted by at least one key ornithological reference work. The inclusion of the subspecies should be seen as a synthesis, and not as a taxonomic endorsement. As such, we include in the new checklist 1919 ...

Activated TCD4+ cells are detected in human atherosclerotic plaques which indicate their participation in disease progression and destabilization. Among these cells, IFN-γ-producing T cells (TH1) are recognized as having a pro-atherogenic role. Recently, the IL-17-producing T helper lineage of cells (TH17) has been identified in atherosclerotic lesions. They have been linked to atheroma development through the production of pro-inflammatory mediators present in these lesions. Furthermore, IL-22 producing ...

Molecular detection of the BCR-ABL1 fusion transcripts is necessary for the genetic confirmation of a chronic myeloid leukemia diagnosis and for the risk classification of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. BCR-ABL1 mRNAs are usually identified using a conventional RT-PCR technique according to the BIOMED-1 method. In this study, we evaluated 122 BCR-ABL1-positive samples with the Q-LAMP assay to establish if this technology may represent a valid alternative to the qualitative BIOMED-1 PCR technique ...

Smoking is a self-destructive behavior that is known to induce remodeling of the lower airways, leading to squamous metaplasia, but little is known about its effects on the nose and paranasal sinuses. Nasal irrigations are often mentioned as measures for treating sinonasal inflammations. The purpose of our study was to compare the effects of nasal irrigations with sulfurous-arsenical-ferruginous thermal water or isotonic sodium chloride solution in smokers with nonallergic chronic rhinosinusitis, ...

Nowadays, electric vehicles represent a promising solution for reducing the fuel consumption (and thus the carbon dioxide emission) and the pollutant emissions of road vehicles, especially in highly congested urban areas, although their driving range and usability still limit the customer acceptance even for a city car application. Extended-range electric vehicles may partly overcome these limitations, having an auxiliary power unit which can provide electrical energy to the powertrain once the battery ...

Facies and ostracod analyses have been performed on a continental core drilled at Coste San Giacomo (Anagni, central Italy), where a middle Villafranchian faunal assemblage was first discovered in 1978. The core intercepted the palaeontological level and penetrated the underlying sedimentary succession, previously largely unknown, for a total sediment recovery of 40 m. In addition, new field surveys led to the discovery of Hippopotamus sp. remains at the faunal site, thus pre-dating the dispersal ...

Radiopacifying agents are commonly added to bone cements to enhance the visibility of the cement in radiography. The radiopacifiers usually employed may, however, have undesired effects on the mechanical properties of the cement. A potentially new radiopacifier is tantalum, which in the present work was evaluated in terms of radiopacity. Bone cements containing different percentages of tantalum were compared with plain bone cement as well as with formulations containing different percentages of ...

Abstract Multi‐electrode arrays with 3D micropillars allow the recording of electrophysiological signals in vitro with higher precision and signal‐to‐noise ratio than planar arrays. This is the result of the tight interaction between the 3D electrode and the cell membrane. Most 3D electrodes are manufactured on rigid substrates and their integration on flexible substrates is largely unexplored. Here, a straightforward approach is presented for fabricating soft interfaces featuring 3D poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)‐ ...

The non zero value of Planck constant $h$ underlies the emergence of several inequalities that must be satisfied in the quantum realm, the most prominent one being Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Among these inequalities, Bekenstein bound provides a universal limit on the entropy that can be contained in a localized quantum system of given size and total energy. In this Letter, we explore how Bekenstein bound is affected when Heisenberg uncertainty relation is deformed so as to accommodate gravitational ...
