The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and ...

Patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer infiltrating the left atrium (LA) or the intrapericardial base of the pulmonary veins (PVs) are generally not considered good candidates for surgery because of the poor long-term survival. In the last 10 years, 31 consecutive patients with non-small cell lung cancer directly invading the LA or the intrapericardial base of the PVs underwent surgery. Pneumonectomy was the operation performed most frequently. In-hospital mortality was 9.7% and ...

The association between DTNBP1 genotype and cognitive abilities was investigated in three population samples (1054 Scottish, 1806 Australian and 745 English) of varying age. There was evidence in each of the cohorts for association (P < 0.05) to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes previously shown to relate to cognition. By comparison with previous findings, these associations included measures of memory, and there was at best equivocal evidence of association with general cognitive ...

Intraosseous mandibular artero-venous malformations (AVMs) are rare (5% of all vascular malformations) but of great clinical importance. They can lead to dental emergencies and may cause disfigurement, morbidity, and even death. We describe the radiological appearance and the endovascular treatment of a rare high-flow vascular malformation of the mandibular body resembling a dental cyst, embolized by Guglielmi's detachable coils (GDC).

Abstract The techno-functional approach has been employed to better understand one of the more relevant artifact types generally found in Lower Palaeolithic sites: so-called small tools. Particularly, some Italian sites, such as Ficoncella, Isernia and others, have been the subject of specialized studies which provide evidence of an unexpected complexity of technical behaviours mainly related to highly specialized functional properties of the small tools. In this paper, we aim to enhance the debate ...

Since 2005, the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) has published updated checklists of Brazilian birds almost every year. Herein, we present a completely new and annotated version of our checklist. For the first time, we list all bird subspecies known from Brazil that are currently accepted by at least one key ornithological reference work. The inclusion of the subspecies should be seen as a synthesis, and not as a taxonomic endorsement. As such, we include in the new checklist 1919 ...

Activated TCD4+ cells are detected in human atherosclerotic plaques which indicate their participation in disease progression and destabilization. Among these cells, IFN-γ-producing T cells (TH1) are recognized as having a pro-atherogenic role. Recently, the IL-17-producing T helper lineage of cells (TH17) has been identified in atherosclerotic lesions. They have been linked to atheroma development through the production of pro-inflammatory mediators present in these lesions. Furthermore, IL-22 producing ...

The non zero value of Planck constant $h$ underlies the emergence of several inequalities that must be satisfied in the quantum realm, the most prominent one being Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Among these inequalities, Bekenstein bound provides a universal limit on the entropy that can be contained in a localized quantum system of given size and total energy. In this Letter, we explore how Bekenstein bound is affected when Heisenberg uncertainty relation is deformed so as to accommodate gravitational ...

and purpose: Although proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) exercises are used in rehabilitation practice, their effects in patients with low back pain (LBP) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of PNF training for pain and disability in patients with LBP. In this systematic review, we searched five databases from the earliest date available to October 2020. Three comparisons were performed: PNF versus control, PNF versus core strengthening, and PNF versus conventional ...

Abstract Specific detection of dopamine (DA) is achieved with organic neuromorphic devices with no specific recognition function in an electrolyte solution. The response to voltage pulses consists of amplitude‐depressed current spiking mimicking the short‐term plasticity (STP) of synapses. An equivalent circuit hints that the STP timescale of the device arises from the capacitance and resistance of the poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) in series with the electrolyte ...

Reversibly tunable short-term plasticity (STP) of the channel current in organic neuromorphic devices is demonstrated with a three-terminal architecture. Electrolyte-gated organic transistors—EGOTs—are driven with square voltage pulses at the drain electrodes, while the gate bias enables the modulation of the amplitude and characteristic time scale of the depressive STP spiking response up to 1 order of magnitude. The gate potential sets the baseline and the steady-state current, preluding multilevel ...

DNA methylation in the human genome is largely programmed and shaped by transcription factor binding and interaction between DNA methyltransferases and histone marks during gamete and embryo development. Normal methylation profiles can be modified at single or multiple loci, more frequently as consequences of genetic variants acting in cis or in trans, or in some cases stochastically or through interaction with environmental factors. For many developmental disorders, specific methylation patterns ...

The water dispersion of the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most used material precursors in organic electronics also thanks to its industrial production. There is a growing interest for conductive polymers that could be alternative surrogates or replace PEDOT:PSS in some applications. A recent study by our group compared electrodeposited PEDOT:Nafion vs PEDOT:PSS in the use for neural recordings. Here, we introduce an easy ...

We propose a heuristic derivation of Casimir effect in the context of minimal length theories based on a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). By considering a GUP with only a quadratic term in the momentum, we compute corrections to the standard formula of Casimir energy for the parallel-plate geometry, the sphere and the cylindrical shell. For the first configuration, we show that our result is consistent with the one obtained via more rigorous calculations in Quantum Field Theory. Experimental ...

Microelectrode arrays are used for recording and stimulation in neurosciences both in vitro and in vivo. The electrodeposition of conductive polymers, such as poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), is widely adopted to improve both the in vivo recording and the charge injection limit of metallic microelectrodes. The workhorse of conductive polymers in the neurosciences is PEDOT:PSS, where PSS represents polystyrene-sulfonate. In this paper, the counterion is the fluorinated polymer Nafion, so ...
