INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare respiratory signs and symptoms between patients with and without chest X-ray abnormalities in order to establish the meaning of radiographic findings in pulmonary PCM diagnosis. METHODS: The epidemiological, clinical and radiological lung findings of 44 patients with paracoccidiodomycosis (PCM) were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups of 23 and 21 individuals according to the presence (group 1) or absence (group 2) of chest X-ray abnormalities, ...

-We studied the diet composition and overlap of Scarlet Ibises (Eudocimus ruber) and Little Blue Herons (Egretta caerulea) in a mangrove swamp in southeast Brazil during the 1996-1997 breeding season, which occurs during the rainiest period. Crabs comprised 95% of all prey taken by the ibises and 80% of the prey of the herons. Nevertheless, diet overlap was small (-30%) due to ibises feeding mostly on Uca spp. and Eurythium limosum crabs, which were taken from their burrows; the herons fed on the arboreal ...

The marine environment is predicted to become warmer and more hypoxic, and these conditions may become a challenge for marine fish species. Phenotypically plastic responses facilitating acclimatization to changing environments can be mediated by DNA methylation through the modulation of gene expression. To investigate whether temperature and hypoxia exposure induce DNA methylation changes, we challenged post-smolt Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) to increasing temperatures (12 → 20°C, 1°C week –1 ) under normoxia ...

Experiment was carried out to study the effect of four levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 50, 100 and 200 kg N ha-1) on dry matter and crude protein production and plant height, leaf/stem relationship and chemical composition in two cuts of black oat cv IAPAR 61, in areas where soybean was cultivated. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, in which two cuts of black oat were evaluated. Total dry matter was 3283, 4691, 4993 and 5471kg ha-1 for levels 0, 50, 100 and 200 kg, respectively. ...

In this paper we propose a solution of the Lambertian shape-from-shading (SFS) problem by designing a new mathematical framework based on the notion of viscosity solution. The power of our approach is twofolds: (1) it defines a notion of weak solutions (in the viscosity sense) which does not necessarily require boundary data. Moreover, it allows to characterize the viscosity solutions by their “minimums”; and (2) it unifies the works of [Rouy and Tourin, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 29 (1992) 867–884], [Lions et ...

We propose a new method for the Lambertian Shape From Shading (SFS) problem based on the notion of Crandall-Lions viscosity solution. This method has the advantage of requiring the knowledge of the solution (the surface to be reconstructed) only on some part of the boundary and/or of the singular set (the set of the points at maximal intensity). Moreover it unifies in an unique mathematical formulation the works of Rouy et al. [34, 50], Falcone et al. [21], Prados et al. [46, 48, 49], based on the notion ...

Hybrids of the species Pseudoplatystoma corruscansvs.Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum are extensively traded because they are more docile and precocious compared to their parents. This study aimed to identify the occurrence of hybrid 'Surubim' in rivers of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, applying molecular techniques. Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum and hybrid 'Surubim' were detected using multiplex PCR and PCR-RFLP in RAG2, GLOBIN, EF1α, 18S rRNA nuclear genes, and mitochondrial ...

Metastasis accounts for more than 90% of cancer deaths. Cells from primary solid tumors may invade adjacent tissues and migrate to distant sites where they establish new colonies. The tumor microenvironment is now recognized as an important participant in the signaling that induces cancer cell migration. An essential process for metastasis is extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation by metalloproteases (MMPs), which allows tumor cells to invade local tissues and to reach blood vessels. The members of ...

The neotropical characid Salminus franciscanus is an economically valuable migratory fish whose populations have been drastically reduced in recent decades due to industrial and economic development in Brasil. To study its reproduction, a total of 283 adult specimens were captured in the Upper São Francisco River, downstream from the Três Marias dam, Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brasil, from August 2009 to July 2010. The gonadal maturity stages were determined from histological features of the gonads ...

Inflammation is a necessary process to control infection. However, exacerbated inflammation, acute or chronic, promotes deleterious effects in the organism. Violacein (viola), a quorum sensing metabolite from the Gram-negative bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum, has been shown to protect mice from malaria and to have beneficial effects on tumors. However, it is not known whether this drug possesses anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, we investigated whether viola administration is able to ...

Abstract Brazil is a megadiverse country and is participant of fundamental environmental agreements for biodiversity conservation. Saliva is a biofluid that maintains the health of oral tissues and the homeostasis of oral microbiota. Studies have demonstrated that Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients have different salivary microbiota than healthy individuals.
