Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or ...

Thirty two medicinal plants used popularly for their proposed diuretic and/or antihypertensive properties have been tested for antihypertensive effects in conscious unrestrained rats. All extractions were made in aqueous ethanol (50: 50 by vol.) at low temperature. Before administration of the extracts the alcohol was evaporated. The extracts (40 ml/kg) were always administered per os. Antihypertensive effects in SHR rats were observed after the administration of Allium sativum Linn, (bulb), Olea europaea ...

7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC) is a cholesterol oxidation product with several biological functions. 7-KC has the capacity to cause cell death depending on the concentration and specific cell type. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells with the ability to differentiate into various types of cells, such as osteoblasts and adipocytes, among others. MSCs contribute to the development of a suitable niche for hematopoietic stem cells, and are involved in the development of diseases, such as leukemia, ...

This article discusses the relationship between physical education and health in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century, drawing on the case of one of the most prestigious schools at the time, Colégio Abílio. Rather than merely revealing the discourses that surrounded the provision of physical education at the school, we seek to comprehend the different ways in which it was incorporated into its educational routine. Two sources of different kinds were used: newspapers published in the city and ...

The occurrence of multifocal skeletal involvement in immunocompetent patients is rare, even in countries where tuberculosis is endemic. Multifocal skeletal lesions may occur as a result of hematogenous dissemination from another primary focus such as cervical lymph nodes, lungs, tonsils or gastrointestinal tract. We present a 59 year-old man with a history of intermittent and disabling pain in his left knee for 2 years. The patient in this case presented with lung infection with bilateral skeletal ...

Abstract Biodiversity underlies ecosystem functioning. While aboveground biodiversity is often well studied, the belowground microbiome, in particular protists, remains largely unknown. Indeed, holistic insights into soil microbiome structures in natural soils, especially in hyperdiverse biomes such as the Brazilian Cerrado, remain unexplored. Here, we study the soil microbiome across four major vegetation zones of the Cerrado, ranging from grass-dominated to tree-dominated vegetation with a focus ...

There is an enormous deficit in sanitation infrastructure in most Brazilian cities. To tackle this challenge, it is crucial to conceive the new sanitation infrastructure based on sustainability principles, including an integrated approach for the management of the liquid, solid and gaseous phases. Two watersheds were chosen as study areas, due to their ...

As previously recorded in several papers, including ours, the following four species were recognized: D. cardini, D. cardinoides, D. neocardini, and D. polymorpha. However, it was realized that most of the flies we have previously identified as Drosophila cardinoides belong in fact to Drosophila ...

Results from clinical studies suggest that more than half of the 166 million dental restorations that were placed in the United States in 2005 were replacements for failed restorations. This emphasis on replacement therapy is expected to grow as dentists use composite as opposed to dental amalgam to restore moderate to large posterior lesions. Composite restorations have higher failure rates, more recurrent caries, and increased frequency of replacement as compared to amalgam. Penetration of bacterial ...

Composite restorations have higher failure rates, more recurrent caries and increased frequency of replacement as compared to dental amalgam. Penetration of bacterial enzymes, oral fluids, and bacteria into the crevices between the tooth and composite undermines the restoration and leads to recurrent decay and failure. The gingival margin of composite restorations is particularly vulnerable to decay and at this margin, the adhesive and its seal to dentin provides the primary barrier between the ...

In biofloc technology (BFT) systems, nutrient cycling for microorganisms takes place. This results in minimal or null water exchange. The sum of fish biomass and microorganisms favors alkalinity consumption and, consequently, pH reduction. It is in this context that the present study evaluates alkalinity and pH maintenance using sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) on BFT during a Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) nursery.
