The argumentative structure of Philo’s De Mutatione Nominum 252-263 exemplifies one of the most interesting and creative patterns of elaboration used in his commentary. A kind of pedagogical exercise related with the expansion of a χρεία, well known in the rhetorical circles since the first century B.C. and clearly elucidated by Theon of Alexandria and Hermogenes. The pattern is faithfully reproduced in his own way as if it were a vital part of his hermeneutical and persuasive code o f interpretation.

The way Philo structures his commentary, argues his theses, develops his themes, or performs the apology of his people and spiritual heritage, reflects the foundational importance of rhetorical argumentation as a privileged technique of exegesis and exposition, and the philosophical character of his argumentation. It thus becomes clear that the writings of Philo are highly inspired in their form and function by the rhetorical theory of argumentation - a techne that permeates all his treatises but ...

The impassioned eulogy of toil in De Sacrificiis 35-41 is a typical illustration of the encomium as an exercise in epideictic oratory; a rhetorical structure including essentially four main topics, besides proemium and epilogue, in accordance with the literary conventions of the day. Mental structures like this, inculcated by the educational system in the formative stages of Philo’s literary experience are freely and creatively used as a generally accepted norm for coordinating the argumentative ...

The Hebrew Bible does not present the pleasure as a problem. Nevertheless, the relationship with Greek philosophical tradition made it possible (or even necessary) to Jewish interpreters to relate their Sacred Book to the question of the pleasure. In Philo of Alexandria the Torah is directly involved in a radical opposition to hedonism. In this article, I observe the way this opposition takes place in Philo’s writing, and I suggest that it is an opposition of discourses motivated not only by the ...
