Neuroinflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Previous studies have shown that metformin exerts anti-inflammatory effects and promotes functional recovery in various central nervous system diseases. We designed this study to investigate the effects of metformin on EBI after SAH. Our results indicate that the use of metformin alleviates the brain edema, behavioral disorders, cell apoptosis, and neuronal injury caused by SAH. ...

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is one kind of life-threatening stroke, which leads to severe brain damage. Pyroptosis plays a critical role in early brain injury (EBI) after SAH. Previous reports suggest that SAH-induced brain edema, cell apoptosis, and neuronal injury could be suppressed by dexmedetomidine (Dex). In this study, we used a rat model of SAH to investigate the effect of Dex on pyroptosis in EBI after SAH and to determine the mechanisms involved. Pyroptosis was found in microglia in EBI ...

In the current study, we examined the potential effect of Ginsenoside Rg3 against gallbladder cancer cells, the underlying signaling mechanisms were also studied. We demonstrated that Rg3 exerted potent cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic activity against established and primary human gallbladder cancer cells. Yet it was safe to non-cancerous gallbladder epithelial cells. At the molecular level, we showed that Rg3 induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress activation, the latter was evidenced by C/EBP homologous ...

After the existence of phlebotomine sand flies was first reported in China in 1910, the distribution of different species and their role in the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been extensively studied. Up until 2008, four species have been verified as vectors of VL, namely, Phlebotomus chinensis (Ph. sichuanensis), Ph. longiductus (Ph. chinensis longiductus), Ph. wui (Ph. major wui), and Ph. alexandri. The sand fly species vary greatly depending on the natural environments in the different ...

This article investigates nonlinear impulsive Caputo fractional differential equations. Utilizing Lyapunov functions, Laplace transforms of fractional derivatives and boundedness of Mittag-Leffler functions, several sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the global ultimate boundedness and the exponential stability of the systems. An example is given to explain the obtained results.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is known to be a risk factor for atherosclerosis (AS), derived from a series of chronic inflammatory reactions caused by hypoxia. However, the association between chronic inflammation and high blood pressure caused by hypoxia remains to be fully elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on inflammatory cytokines and AS. A total of 100 patients with OSAS and 50 healthy control subjects ...

The aim of the present study was to determine the ability of oridonin to enhance the anticancer activity of lentinan (LNT) in SMMC‑7721 human hepatoma cells in vitro by using various techniques, including MTT, flow cytometry, quantitative PCR and western blot assays. The results demonstrated that 20 µg/ml was a non‑toxic concentration of oridonin for L02 normal liver cells and SMMC‑7721 cells, while 0‑200 µg/ml of LNT only had anti‑proliferative effects on SMMC‑7721 cells. Inflammation is typically related to dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) that leads to early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Resolvin D1 (RVD1), a lipid mediator derived from docosahexaenoic acid, possesses anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of RVD1 in SAH. A Sprague-Dawley rat model of SAH was established through endovascular perforation. RVD1was injected through the femoral vein at 1 and 12 h after SAH ...

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been widely accepted as a detrimental factor in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced early brain injury (EBI), which is eminently related to poor neurologic function outcome. Previous studies have revealed that enhancement of heat shock protein 22 (hsp22) under conditions of stress is a friendly mediator of mitochondrial homeostasis, oxidative stress and apoptosis, thus accelerating neurological recovery. However, no study has confirmed whether hsp22 attenuates mitochondrial ...

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are widely accepted as a pernicious factor in the progression of intracranial aneurysm (IA), which is eminently related to cell apoptosis and extracellular matrix degradation, but the mechanism remains to be elucidated. Recent evidence has identified that enhancement of Cyclophilin D (CypD) under stress conditions plays a critical role in ROS output, thus accelerating vascular destruction. However, no study has confirmed whether cypD is a detrimental mediator of cell apoptosis ...

Chiral macrocycles possess significant value in chiral science and supramolecular chemistry. Pillararenes, as a class of relatively young supramolecular macrocyclic hosts, have been widely used for host-guest recognition and self-assembly. Since the position of substituents on the benzene rings breaks the molecular symmetry (symmetric plane and symmetric center), pillararenes possess planar chirality. However, it is a great challenge to synthesize stable and resolvable enantiomers because of the ...

Abstract It is widely accepted dietary fiber intimately linked to inflammatory and nervous diseases, which often been described with altered gastrointestinal (GI) motility. However, how dose dietary fiber modulate inflammation and crosstalk influence GI function has not been explained in detail. We found fiber-free diet reduced intestinal motility, accompanied by upregulated proinflammatory immunocytes and inflammatory cytokines in colon of mice. We also discovered high-cellulose diet increased synthesis ...
