Abstract Summary: A rigorous process model has been developed which describes a closed‐loop recycling system for PET beverage bottles. The reaction / mass transport model is aimed at the dominant quality parameters such as intrinsic viscosity, concentration of acetaldehyde, concentration of carboxylic end‐groups, and concentration of vinyl end‐groups, respectively. The model covers the main process steps being preform production (injection moulding), drying, solid‐state polycondensation, and melt filtration. ...

Summary A systematic approach was carried out to quantify the discolouration of different poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) samples such as virgin bottle‐grade resins, bottle‐to‐bottle recycled chips, and bottle‐to‐bottle recycled flakes. The PET samples were treated in a fixed bed reactor in the solid‐state. The possible influencing parameters such as residence time, temperature, and oxygen partial pressure were studied by analysing the CIELAB b*‐coordinate (axis = yellow to blue) with a spectrophotometer ...

Microbial ureteral stent colonisation (MUSC) is one leading risk factor for complications associated with ureteral stent placement. As MUSC remains frequently undetected by standard urine cultures, its definitive diagnosis depends on microbiological investigation of the stent. However, a standard reference laboratory technique for studying MUSC is still lacking. A total of 271 ureteral stents removed from 199 consecutive patients were investigated. Urine samples were obtained prior to device removal. ...

Ureteral stent insertion at the time of renal transplantation significantly decreases complications of urine leakage and obstruction, but bears an intrinsic risk of microbial colonization. Associated urinary tract infection (UTI) may pose a significant risk for graft infection and subsequent graft failure, in particular, during high-level immunosuppression in the early phase after transplantation. The aims of this prospective study were (i) to assess the frequency of microbial ureteral stent colonization ( ...

Ureteral stents are frequently associated with side effects. Most patients suffer from storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Storage LUTS are commonly attributed to the irritation of the trigone, smooth muscle spasm or a combination of factors. The relationship between microbial ureteral stent colonization (MUSC) and de novo or worsening storage LUTS has not been investigated yet.Five hundred ninety-one polyurethane ureteral stents from 275 male and 153 female patients were prospectively evaluated. ...

Drinking water is becoming increasingly scarce as the world’s population grows and climate change continues. However, there is great potential to improve drinking water pipelines, as 30% of fresh water is lost between the supplier and consumer. While systematic process monitoring could play a crucial role in the early detection and repair of leaks, current practice requires manual inspection, which is both time-consuming and costly. This project envisages maintenance-free measurements at numerous ...

A nanowire characterization platform is designed and fabricated in MEMS-technology for the thermoelectric and structural characterization of single nanowires. The latter is achieved by making the chip compatible to TEM holder, by restricting its thickness to less than 160 μm and its diagonal dimensions to less than 3 mm. Two different fabrication technologies are presented for the realization of such platform, based on a design reproducing the functional requirements. Our first fabrication technique ...

To provide fast and accurate dose calculation in voxelized geometries for proton radiation therapy by implementing an adaptive step size algorithm in the proton macro Monte Carlo (pMMC) method. The in-house developed local-to-global MMC method for proton dose calculation is extended with an adaptive step size algorithm for efficient proton transport through a voxelized geometry by sampling transport parameters from a pre-simulated database. Adaptive choice of an adequate slab size in dependence of ...

Graph parameters such as the clique number and the chromatic number are central in many areas, ranging from computer networks to linguistics to computational neuroscience to social networks. In particular, the chromatic number of a graph can be applied in solving practical tasks as diverse as pattern matching, scheduling jobs to machines, allocating registers in compiler optimization, and even solving Sudoku puzzles. Typically, however, the underlying graphs are subject to (often minor) changes. ...

We report on the fabrication of a silicon platform for the thermoelectric and structural characterization of single nanowires, equipped with nanoporous electrodes. Controlled wafer thinning to a thickness of 160 μm results in platform chips, which can be inserted into Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) for the nanowire's structural composition analysis. Our fabrication approach comprises the Bosch process (ICP), and "dicing before grinding" techniques to achieve this small thickness. To study ...

Abstract Summary: Innovative reactor internals consisting of a number of vertically stacked perforated plates have been proposed to increase mass transfer rates of volatiles from highly viscous polymer melts. A mathematical model comprising mass and enthalpy balances for the polycondensation of polyamide 6 has been used to evaluate the new reactor design. According to the simulation, the alternating arrangement of devolatilization and residence zones leads to an effective removal of reaction water ...

The MapReduce framework has firmly established itself as one of the most widely used parallel computing platforms for processing big data on tera- and peta-byte scale. Approaching it from a theoretical standpoint has proved to be notoriously difficult, however. In continuation of Goodrich et al.'s early efforts, explicitly espousing the goal of putting the MapReduce framework on footing equal to that of long-established models such as the PRAM, we investigate the obvious complexity question of how ...

We analyze the Disjoint Path Allocation problem (DPA) in the priority framework. Motivated by the problem of traffic regulation in communication networks, DPA consists of allocating edge-disjoint paths in a graph. Like an online algorithm, a priority algorithm receives its input sequentially and must output irrevocable decisions for individual input items before having seen the entire input. However, in contrast to the online setting, a priority algorithm may choose an order on the set of all possible ...

We demonstrate a single-stage, multipass Ti:sapphire amplifier capable of delivering sub-13 fs, 3.2 mJ pulses at a 1 kHz repetition rate. Gaussian filters are used to suppress the gain-narrowing effect, thereby enabling the achievement of an ultrabroadband flat-top spectrum with a FWHM>130 nm. The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the output pulses is actively stabilized via the feed-forward scheme (for the oscillator) and a fast 1 kHz f-to-2f interferometer, which corrects the amplifier-induced CEP ...

The flux of water, nutrients, carbon and salt through the subsurface at the land-sea interface is an important control on coastal nutrient processes, salinization of coastal aquifers and carbon balances of the coastal zone. However, these fluxes are often spatially and temporally complex and difficult to quantify, especially in high-energy mesotidal systems. Here we use vertical temperature profiles along a morphologically complex mesotidal high-energy beachface to map and quantify water infiltration ...

It is well known that the set of powers of any given order, for example squares, in a regular language need not be regular. Nevertheless, finite automata can identify them via their roots. More precisely, we recall that, given a regular language L, the set of square roots of L is regular. The same holds true for the nth roots for any n and for the set of all nontrivial roots; we give a concrete construction for all of them. Using the above result, we obtain decision algorithms for many natural problems ...
