Organotin compounds such as tributyltin (TBT) are used as antifouling paints by shipping companies. TBT inhibits the aromatase responsible for the transformation of testosterone into estrogen. Our hypothesis is that TBT modulates the vascular reactivity of female rats. Female Wistar rats were treated daily (Control; CONT) or TBT (100 ng/kg) for 15 days. Rings from thoracic aortas were incubated with phenylephrine (PHE, 10−10−10−4 M) in the presence and absence of endothelium, and in the presence of ...

Mercury intoxication is a public health risk factor due to its hazardous effect to several organs, including the cardiovascular system. There is evidence of endothelial dysfunction after exposure to mercury, but the effects on endothelium-dependent vasodilatation are still unknown. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the chronic effects of high HgCl2 doses on the mechanisms of vasodilatation. Wistar rats were injected with HgCl2 (1st dose 10.86 μg/kg, and daily doses 0.014 μg/kg for 30 days ...

Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is a non-classical major histocompatibility complex class Ib molecule that acts as a specific immunosuppressor. Some studies have demonstrated that human papillomavirus (HPV) seems to be involved in lower or absent HLA-G expression, particularly in cervical cancer. In this study, we performed a cross-sectional study, systematically comparing the qualitative expression of the HLA-G5 isoform in invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC), stratifying patients according to the ...

Several electrochemical methods were employed to confirm the ability of caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) to adsorb on zinc surface in aerated ethanol solutions. The interaction between the organic compound and the electrode surface was dependent on the electrode potential. Adsorption on the electrode surface was confirmed by comparing the voltammograms, Tafel plots and EIS curves of a zinc electrode in the absence and presence of dissolved caffeine. The calculated standard free energy of adsorption ...

Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common malignancies and is the sixth cause of cancer-related death in the world. Inactivation of cell-cycle regulating genes, such as p14ARF and p16INK4a, and cell adhesion genes, such as E-cadherin, is common in cancer, and results from genetic and/or epigenetic alterations. Therefore, we have analysed the mRNA expression of p14ARF, p16INK4a and E-cadherin in 17 matched ESCC and normal mucosal samples obtained from Brazilian patients ...

Yacon flour has been considered a food with prebiotic potential because of the high levels of fructooligosaccharides, which allows for its use in formulating synbiotic foods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of yacon flour and probiotic (Bifidobacterium longum) on the modulation of variables related to bone health. Thirty-two Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, yacon flour, diet+B. longum, and yacon flour+B. longum. After euthanasia, the bones were removed for analysis ...

Abstract Ancestry informative markers (AIMs) are genetic loci with large frequency differences between the major ethnic groups and are very useful in admixture estimation. However, their frequencies are poorly known within South American indigenous populations, making it difficult to use them in admixture studies with Latin American populations, such as the trihybrid Brazilian population. To minimize this problem, the frequencies of the AIMs FY‐null, RB2300, LPL, AT3‐I/D, Sb19.3, APO, and PV92 were ...

The genetic heterogeneity of Mendelian disorders results in a significant proportion of patients that are unable to be assigned a confident molecular diagnosis after conventional exon sequencing and variant interpretation. Here, we evaluated how many patients with an inherited retinal disease (IRD) have variants of uncertain significance (VUS) that are disrupting splicing in a known IRD gene by means other than affecting the canonical dinucleotide splice site. Three in silico splice-affecting variant ...

Water deficit is one of the main factors that reduce grain yield. A better understanding of the mechanisms related to this abiotic stress is a key aspect to design and act upon drought tolerance improvement in crop plants. Therefore, the major objective of this study was to investigate four common bean genotypes for drought tolerance and to establish their tolerance mechanisms. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, using the completely randomized design in a factorial arrangement (2 × 4), ...

Background: Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) is attributed mainly to the prolonged use of calcium channel blocking agents, anticonvulsants, and anti-calcineurin inhibitors . The management of DIGO depends on the severity of the disease and includes surgical intervention and plaque control. Compared to conventional surgical treatment, the recent literature data have shown that gingivectomy using a high-power laser (HPL) is a short and easy procedure, which results in minimal postoperative discomfort ...

Abstract The genetic constitution of Afro‐derived Brazilian populations is barely studied. To improve that knowledge, we investigated the Alu YAP element and five Y‐chromosome STRs (DYS19, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, and DYS393) to estimate ethnic male contribution in the constitution of four Brazilian quilombos remnants: Mocambo , Rio das Rãs , Kalunga , and Riacho de Sacutiaba . Results indicated significant differences among communities, corroborating historical information about the Brazilian settlement. ...

A critical issue in software project management is the accurate estimation of size, effort, resources, cost, and time spent in the development process. Underestimates may lead to time pressures that may compromise full functional development and the software testing process. Likewise, overestimates can result in noncompetitive budgets. Do ponto ...

Ecologists usually estimate means, but devote much less attention to variation. The study of variation is a key aspect to understand natural systems and to make predictions regarding them. In community ecology, most studies focus on local species diversity (alpha diversity), but only in recent decades have ecologists devoted proper attention to variation in community composition among sites (beta diversity). This is in spite of the fact that the first attempts to estimate beta diversity date back ...

Abstract Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder of lipid metabolism caused by pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in LDLR , APOB and PCSK9 genes. Variants in FH-phenocopy genes ( LDLRAP1 , APOE , LIPA , ABCG5 , ABCG8 ), polygenic hypercholesterolemia and hyper-Lp(a) can also mimic a clinical FH phenotype. We aim to present a new diagnostic tool to unravel the genetic background of clinical FH phenotype. Biochemical and genetic study was performed in 1005 individuals with clinical diagnosis of ...
