The design of polymeric biocompatible nanomaterials for biological and medical applications has received special attention in recent years. Among different polymers, the triblock type copolymers (EO)x(PO)y(EO)x or Pluronics® stand out due its favorable characteristics such as biocompatibility, low tissue adhesion, thermosensitivity, and structural capacity to produce different types of macro and nanostructures, e.g. micelles, vesicles, nanocapsules, nanospheres, and hydrogels. However, Pluronic itself ...

Visceral leishmaniasis caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum is a zoonosis. The domestic dog is the primary reservoir in urban areas. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency, active infection and load of L. infantum in the genital tract of male and female dogs seropositive for this parasite, as well as to identify histological genital alterations associated with this protozoan. We studied 45 male and 25 female L. infantum-seropositive noncastrated dogs from the same endemic area in Brazil. ...

Abstract This study evaluated the rose bengal‐ and erythrosine‐mediated photoinactivation against Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus planktonic and sessile cells using green LED as a light source. The free‐living or 2‐day‐old biofilm cells were treated with different concentrations of the photosensitizing agents and subjected to irradiation. Only 5 min photosensitization with rose bengal at 25 nmol L −1 and 75 μ mol L −1 completely eliminated S. aureus and S . Typhimurium planktonic cells, ...

This contribution presents an alternative synthesis route to produce highly resistive BiFeO3 multiferroic samples. The use of a fast sintering process followed by quenching to room temperature resulted in ceramic bulks with a resistance higher than 1012 Ohm.m at room temperature. In addition, anomalies found in the dielectric and resistivity characterization indicated the presence of magnetoelectric coupling in the synthesized BiFeO3 sample.

In this paper, a pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) technique with neutral point capacitor voltage balancing in single-phase neutral-point-clamped converters is presented. The technique is based on the injection of a common-mode voltage signal into the sinusoidal modulating signals of the conventional carrier-based PWM. Although several strategies have been reported for such a problem by using the voltage signal injection, the proposed method is very simple with easy implementation. A set of equations is ...

Why are intradural disc herniations (IDHs) (0.3% of all discs) so infrequent? One explanation has been the marked adherence of the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) to the ventral wall of the dura. Variability in symptoms and difficulty in interpreting magnetic resonance (MR) images with/without contrast make the diagnosis of an IDH difficult. Here, we reported a patient with an L1-L2 IDH and appropriately reviewed the relevant literature.A 57-year-old male presented with chronic low back and 1 ...
