Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the main contaminants in aquatic environments. PAHs can affect organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or teratogenic characteristics. Depending on the PAHs, concentration, and period of exposure, biological damage can occur leading to histopathologic alterations. This study aimed to evaluate the molecular, biochemical and histological responses of the oyster Crassostrea gasar exposed to pyrene (0.25 and 0.5 μM) and fluorene (0.6 and 1.2 ...

Exposure of aquatic organisms to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), such as phenanthrene (PHE), may increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cause changes in the biotransformation systems. In addition, changes in water temperature can cause adverse effects in the organisms. Estuarine species, like the oyster Crassostrea brasiliana, can adapt and tolerate temperature variation. To evaluate the influence of temperature on biological responses of C. brasiliana exposed to PHE, ...

Vector control, particularly distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs), constitutes one of the major pathways to prevent and reduce malaria transmission. ITN distribution campaigns face several challenges, such as inadequate funding, budgetary constraints, hard-to-reach areas, limited transportation, and market and price volatility. While long-term agreements and proper planning can effectively overcome such challenges, those options may not be available for all humanitarian organizations ...

Euryhaline animals from estuaries, such as the oyster Crassostrea brasiliana, show physiological mechanisms of adaptation to tolerate salinity changes. These ecosystems receive constant input of xenobiotics from urban areas, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as phenanthrene (PHE). In order to understand the influence of salinity on the molecular responses of C. brasiliana exposed to PHE, oysters were acclimatized to different salinities (35, 25 and 10) for 15days and then exposed ...

Ascaris spp. infection affects 800 million people worldwide, and half of the world population is currently at risk of infection. Recurrent reinfection in humans is mostly due to the simplicity of the parasite life cycle, but the impact of multiple exposures to the biology of the infection and the consequences to the host's homeostasis are poorly understood. In this context, single and multiple exposures in mice were performed in order to characterize the parasitological, histopathological, tissue ...

Fracture mechanics concepts applied to tests in aggressive environments are a challenge for integrity analysis. Specifically about hydrogen, the concentration of this element in defects or in trapping sites can cause unexpected failure. The present paper presents results showing the influence of hydrogen in the reduction of fracture toughness and a discussion about how to deal with it in high strength alloys. The results show that the hydrogen reduces the plasticity and consequently the applications ...

SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of COVID-19. The dimeric form of the viral Mpro is responsible for the cleavage of the viral polyprotein in 11 sites, including its own N and C-terminus. The lack of structural information for intermediary forms of Mpro is a setback for the understanding its self-maturation process. Herein, we used X-ray crystallography combined with biochemical data to characterize multiple forms of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. For the immature form, we show that extra N-terminal residues ...

Background. Oxidative stress is a significant contributor to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in haemodialysis (HD) patients, predisposing to the generation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) or electronegatively charged LDL subfraction. Antioxidant therapy such as α-tocopherol acts as a scavenger of lipid peroxyl radicals attenuating the oxidative stress, which decreases the formation of oxLDL. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of the α-tocopherol supplementation on ...

Introduction. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is associated with a high in-hospital mortality rate ranging from 20-40%. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) has been suggested as a predictor of inhospital mortality in patients with SBP. However, the accuracy of the MELD has been questioned, and the integrated MELD (iMELD) score, which incorporates age and serum sodium to the previous model, has been proposed to improve prognostic accuracy. The iMELD has not yet been evaluated in patients ...

Human ascariasis is the most prevalent but neglected tropical disease in the world, affecting approximately 450 million people. The initial phase of Ascaris infection is marked by larval migration from the host's organs, causing mechanical injuries followed by an intense local inflammatory response, which is characterized mainly by neutrophil and eosinophil infiltration, especially in the lungs. During the pulmonary phase, the lesions induced by larval migration and excessive immune responses contribute ...
