Summary Background Helicobacter pylori eradication rates with standard triple therapy are declining worldwide. The optimal management of H . pylori is evolving and new treatment combinations for antibiotic resistant H . pylori strains are required, especially for patients with penicillin allergy. Aim To review the effectiveness of alternative antibiotic combinations and necessity of pre‐antibiotic sensitivity testing. Methods A total of 310 consecutive patients who had failed at least one course of ...

The efficient characterization of genetic and epigenetic alterations in oncology, virology, or prenatal diagnostics requires highly sensitive and specific high-throughput approaches. Nevertheless, with the use of conventional methods, sensitivity and specificity were largely limited. By partitioning individual target molecules within distinct compartments, digital PCR (dPCR) could overcome these limitations and detect very rare sequences with unprecedented precision and sensitivity. In dPCR, the ...

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive concept and new design of a drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing process for fabricating color filter (CF) layers of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) onto the structured surfaces of flat substrates, composed of 'physical sidewalls' for aligning and controlling the liquid morphology. Several fundamental guidelines of the design have been addressed in current inkjet-printing techniques. Using a droplet generator (printhead) of the deposition system, the color-ink ...

Natural products (NPs) encompass a rich source of bioactive chemical entities. Here, we used human cancer stem cells (CSCs) in a chemical genomics campaign with NP chemical space to interrogate extracts from diverse strains of actinomycete for anti-cancer properties. We identified a compound (McM25044) capable of selectively inhibiting human CSC function versus normal stem cell counterparts. Biochemical and molecular studies revealed that McM025044 exerts inhibition on human CSCs through the small ...

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a rare autosomal dominant disease that results from an alanine expansion in the N-terminal domain of Poly-A Binding Protein Nuclear-1 (PABPN1). We have recently demonstrated that a two-vector gene therapy strategy significantly ameliorated the pathology in a mouse model of OPMD. This approach entailed intramuscular injection of two recombinant adeno-associated viruses (AAVs), one expressing three short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) to silence both mutant and wild- ...

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a rare late onset genetic disease leading to ptosis, dysphagia and proximal limb muscles at later stages. Human defensins form a family of small, cationic, and Cys-rich antimicrobial proteins that play important roles in innate immunity against invading microbes. They also function as effective immune modulators in adaptive immunity by selectively chemoattracting T lymphocytes and immature dendritic cells. Structures of several β-defensins have recently been characterized, ...

Recent studies show that certain genetic variants confer susceptibility to all subtypes while other variants are subtype-specific. Here, we find Ae. albopictus shows comparable vector competence to ZIKV/DENV with Ae. aegypti by blood-feeding after antibiotic treatment or intrathoracic injection.
