Seventy-eight and three hundred and twenty-four seawater samples collected from Black Sea and North Aegean Sea respectively were analysed for dissolved trace elements. The trace element concentrations in the region near the Danube Delta, which is further influenced by the polluted waters of the Rivers Dnieper and Dniester, vary from 0.36 to 13.7 nM for Cd, from 4.7 to 36.2 nM for Cu and from not detected levels to 29.1 nM for Mn. In general, trace element levels in the Black Sea are higher than ...

There is an unmet clinical need for improved tissue and liquid biopsy tools for cancer detection. We investigated the proteomic profile of extracellular vesicles and particles (EVPs) in 426 human samples from tissue explants (TEs), plasma, and other bodily fluids. Among traditional exosome markers, CD9, HSPA8, ALIX, and HSP90AB1 represent pan-EVP markers, while ACTB, MSN, and RAP1B are novel pan-EVP markers. To confirm that EVPs are ideal diagnostic tools, we analyzed proteomes of TE- (n = 151) and plasma- ...

Diaphanous related formins (DRFs) are cytoskeleton remodeling proteins that mediate specific upstream GTPase signals to regulate cellular processes such as cytokinesis, cell polarity, and organelle motility. Previous work on the Rho-interacting DRF mDia has established that the biological activity of DRFs is regulated by an autoinhibitory interaction of a C-terminal diaphanous autoregulatory domain (DAD) with the DRF N terminus. This autoinhibition is released upon competitive binding of an activated ...

Smoking, probably due to nicotine, has a bivalent effect on inflammatory bowel disease, ameliorating disease activity in ulcerative colitis and with a deleterious effect on Crohn's disease. The effect of nicotine patches in ulcerative colitis is controversial. To investigate the effect of chronic nicotine use in a rat model of colitis.Colitis was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by rectal administration of 30 mg trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS) in 50% ethanol. Descriptor selection in QSAR typically relies on a set of upfront working hypotheses in order to boil down the initial descriptor set to a tractable size. Stepwise regression, computationally cheap and therefore widely used in spite of its potential caveats, is most aggressive in reducing the effectively explored problem space by adopting a greedy variable pick strategy. This work explores an antipodal approach, incarnated by an original Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based Stochastic QSAR Sampler (SQS) that ...

Members of the Rho family of GTPases are key regulators of the actin cytoskeleton. In particular, activated Rac1 stimulates membrane dorsal ruffle formation in response to platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). Abl-interactor (Abi)-1 and βPIX, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rac1, localise at these Rac1-induced actin structures and play important roles in the induction of membrane dorsal ruffling in response to PDGF in fibroblasts. Here, we demonstrate a novel interaction between Abi-1 and ...

Drug discovery programs frequently target members of the human kinome and try to identify small molecule protein kinase inhibitors, primarily for cancer treatment, additional indications being increasingly investigated. One of the challenges is controlling the inhibitors degree of selectivity, assessed by in vitro profiling against panels of protein kinases. The CEC/MAST-MTP PELAGOS Project, which was conducted in 1994 and 1995, found a new dynamic hydrological regime in the Cretan Sea–Cretan Straits region that is interacting with and affecting the whole basin of the Eastern Mediterranean. In the Cretan Sea, the upper thermocline general circulation shows no significant seasonal signal, but the circulation patterns observed were significantly different from those observed in 1986–87, suggesting that there is substantial interannual variability. There ...

Glutamate, one of the main neurotransmitters in the brain, plays a critical role in communication between neurons, neuronal development, and various neurological disorders. Extracellular measurement of neurotransmitters such as glutamate in the brain is important for understanding these processes and developing a new generation of brain–machine interfaces. Here, we demonstrate the use of a perovskite nickelate–Nafion heterostructure as a promising glutamate sensor with a low detection limit of 16 ...

Tackifying resins (TRs) are often added to pressure-sensitive adhesive films to increase their peel strength and adhesion energy. In waterborne adhesives, the TR is dispersed in water using surfactants and then blended with colloidal polymers in water (i.e., latex). In such waterborne systems, there are problems with the colloidal stability and difficulty in applying coatings of the particle blends; the films are often hydrophilic and subject to water uptake. Here, an alternative method of making ...
