The new Neotropical cicada species Fidicinoides flavipronotum sp. n. is described. Comparisons are made to other members of the genus found in Venezuela. Fidicina distanti Goding, 1925 is transferred to Fidicinoides Boulard & Martinelli and Diceroprocta bilaqueata (Uhler, 1903) is transferred to Ariasa Distant. Eleven additional species are recorded for the first time from Venezuela increasing the cicada fauna diversity of the country by 31%. A checklist of Venezuelan species is provided.

A census of the sandfly fauna was undertaken in 1993–1998 in 5 endemic leishmaniasis foci situated at different altitudes in Anzoátegui State, Venezuela. From the 17 species of Lutzomyia identified, we believe that Lu. ovallesi, Lu. panamensis and Lu. gomezi are the probable vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis, while Lu. evansi might transmit visceral leishmaniasis.

Abstract. A new Devonian fossil fish fauna from the region of Caño Colorado between the Rio Palmar and Rio Socuy, Sierra de Perijá, Venezuela, comes from two localities and several horizons within the Campo Chico Formation, dated on plants and spores as Givetian-Frasnian in age. Placoderms are most common, with the antiarch Bothriolepis perija n. sp., showing affinity with species from the Aztec fish fauna of Victoria Land, Antarctica. A second antiarch, Venezuelepis mingui n.g. n.sp., is also closely related ...

The benthic fauna and diel variation in a shallow seagrass bed (Thalassia testudinum) were studied in Playa Mero, Venezuela Samples of organisms and sediments were taken using PVC cylinders, 5 cm in diameter, along a transect perpendicular to the coast Seagrass cover, shoot density and biomass were estimated. The sea grass cover was homogeneous a10ng the transect. The intermediate zone had the highest number of shoots and of above- ground and rhizome biomass. Composition and.abundance of benthic ...

Leishmania infantum has been described as a highly polymorphic group of parasites, responsible for visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. In this paper we report the life-cycle of L . ( L .) infantum in an endemic area of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela, by using molecular diagnosis and characterization of parasites isolated from dogs, humans with visceral leishmaniasis and sand flies. The molecular characterization was carried out by use of kDNA restriction analysis, dot-blot hybridization ...

The Cantaure Formation (Burdigalian to ?early Langhian) is located in the Falcón Basin, North Western Venezuela, and includes one of the most diverse Neogene teleostean and benthonic invertebrate faunas in Tropical America. The paleoenvironmental preferences of the members of this fauna, as well as published paleogeographic reconstructions, suggest that the Cantaure Formation was deposited in a highly-productive shallow water environment, associated with coastal upwelling. We documented a paleodiversity ...

Abstract Trophic ecology of two co‐existing sea stars of the genus Astropecten in the Golfo Triste, Venezuela Monthly trawl samples taken from commercial fishing boats were used to analyze the stomach contents of 981 specimens of Astropecten riensis and 499 A. cf. articulatus. These two star‐fish, like other species in the genus, feed selectively; their primary prey are mollusks, of which gastropods are more frequently eaten than pelecypods. The main food item in the diet of A. riensis is the gastropod ...

Composition, abundance and dispersion of phlebotomine sandfly fauna were studied in Falcon state, Venezuelan north-western region. The sandflies were collected by five methods in 41 localities between 0 to 1584 m. A total of 6273 specimens were collected, 17 species of Lutzomyia and 1 of Brumptomyia were identified. Of these, 10(55.56%) species are known to be anthropophilic. The predominant species was L. evansi (52.37%). The diversity and dispersion range of sandflies along an altitudinal transect, ...

During a period of nine months (May 2010-August2011) the community structure of the organisms from the trawling fishery carried out by the fishermen of the area was identified, quantified and described. The biomass and abundance of the different groups were estimated to perform Abundance-Biomass Comparison Curves (ABC) with the objective of ...
