Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have become the primary health concern for most countries around the world. Currently, more than 36 million people worldwide die from NCDs each year, accounting for 63% of annual global deaths; most are preventable. The global financial burden of NCDs is staggering, with an estimated 2010 global cost of $6.3 trillion (US dollars) that is projected to increase to $13 trillion by 2030. A number of NCDs share one or more common predisposing risk factors, all related to lifestyle ...

Background: Remote ischemic preconditioning (remote IPC) induced by short non-deleterious ischemic episodes prior to an index ischemic event is known to protect the heart from lethal myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury.Although demonstrated to be effective across almost all species, the underlying signaling pathways and specifically a role for nitric oxide (NO) remain poorly understood. We and others recently showed that brief episodes of limb I/R via blood pressure cuff in-/deflations increases ...

Body packing represents the concealment of illegal substances in a person's body with the aim of smuggling. "Body packers" either swallow drug-filled packets or introduce drug-filled packets into their bodies rectally or vaginally with the purpose of concealing them. The three main smuggled drugs are cocaine, heroin and cannabis products. Body packing represents a serious risk of acute narcotic toxicity from drug exposure, intestinal obstruction owing to pellet impaction and bowel perforation with ...

This article describes an experiment, carried out under controlled environment conditions, to investigate the effects of a fulvic acid fraction of soil organic matter on growth, cadmium (Cd) uptake and redistribution by sorghum. In addition the uptake of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) was also determined. Sorghum was grown in nutrient solutions with 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg Cd dm−3, in the absence and presence of organic matter (32 mg C dm−3), for various periods up to 20 days. A decrease in sorghum ...

Abstract Vitamin D is a fundamental regulator of host defences by activating genes related to innate and adaptive immunity. Previous research shows a correlation between the levels of vitamin D in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and the degree of disease severity. This work investigates the impact of the genetic background related to vitamin D pathways on COVID-19 severity. For the first time, the Portuguese population was characterized regarding the prevalence of high impact variants in genes ...

The most common household coffee-brewing method in Italy makes use of a stove-top coffee maker known as moka. This device uses the steam pressure, produced by the water contained in an autoclave-type aluminum kettle heated by an external source, to force upwards water itself through a roasted and ground coffee bed contained in a funnel-shaped filter. Despite its well-established usage, the moka has never been the subject of detailed analysis, which led to a series of unclear descriptions or misinterpretations ...

Myocardial performance index (MPI) measured by conventional Doppler is routinely used to assess right ventricular (RV) systolic function in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Our aim was to determine whether MPI measured by Doppler tissue imaging (tMPI) is effective in assessing RV function in these patients. Retrospectively, we have studied 196 patients with chronic PH [pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP) 81 ± 40 mmHg] and 37 healthy volunteers (PASP of 27 ± 7 mmHg). According to the exclusion ...

Chest pain may be associated with coronary arteries that appear “normal.” Normal is defined here as no visible disease or luminal irregularities (less than 50%) as judged visually at coronary angiography. Normal angiography in patients with chest pain is five times more common in women than in men [1]. Among patients with chest pain and normal angiography, an unknown number are suffering from cardiac pain of ischemic origin. Four carcasses came from hunted wild boars and twelve from animals reared in outdoor pens till nine months of age.
