The absorption and emission spectra of silicon nanocrystals up to $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ diameter have been calculated within a first-principles framework. Our calculations include geometry optimization and the many-body effects induced by the creation of an electron-hole pair. Starting from hydrogenated silicon clusters of different sizes, different $\mathrm{Si}∕\mathrm{O}$ bondings at the cluster surface have been considered. We found that the presence of a $\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{O}\ ...

Abstract Polymeric binders such as β‐cyclodextrins (βCDs) are used to bind with other constituents of energetic formulations and to prevent accidental ignition. One of the advantages of βCDs is the ability to tune their properties by chemical modification. Here, we synthesised nitrated cross‐linked βCDs (βNCXCDs) to produce new binders for energetic formulations. The cross‐linking of βCD with non‐toxic triethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (TEGDGE, X=T) and poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ethers (PEGDGE, ...

Endometriosis is a local pelvic inflammatory process, frequently associated with infertility, with altered function of immune-related cells in the peritoneal environment. Mast cells are known to be key players of the immune system and have been recently involved in endometriosis and in infertility, with their mediators directly suppressing sperm motility. In this study, we evaluated the mast cell population and their mediators in the peritoneal fluid of infertile patients with endometriosis and ...

Cyclodextrins are promising building blocks for the synthesis of industrial binders. A new binder was prepared by cross-linking β-cyclodextrin with variable amounts of polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (40–60% w/w) to produce a soft polyether network that was soluble in water and alcohol, and the thermomechanical properties of the binder were determined. Increasing the amount of cross-linker reduced the glass transition temperature of the binder, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry ...

Carcinoid Crisis represents a rare and extremely dangerous manifestation that can occur in patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs). It is characterized by a sudden onset of hemodynamic instability, sometimes associated with the classical symptoms of carcinoid syndrome, such as bronchospasm and flushing. Carcinoid Crisis seems to be caused by a massive release of vasoactive substances, typically produced by neuroendocrine cells, and can emerge after abdominal procedures, but also spontaneously ...

At the end of January 2020, a novel betacoronavirus, known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, progressively spread in Italy. Patients with cancer are considered more prone to infections because of the immunosuppressive status due to both malignancy and anticancer treatments. From the first Italian government restrictions (23rd February), Modena Cancer Center adopted practical health vigilance recommendations to minimise the risk of exposure to the virus without overlooking cancer ...

Competing and complementary models of resting-state brain dynamics contribute to our phenomenological and mechanistic understanding of whole-brain coordination and communication, and provide potential evidence for differential brain functioning associated with normal and pathological behaviour. These neuroscientific theories stem from the perspectives of physics, engineering, mathematics and psychology and create a complicated landscape of domain-specific terminology and meaning, which, when used ...

Abstract Crystalline polymers such as β‐cyclodextrin (βCD) can be modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) diglycidyl ether cross‐linkers (262, 394, 500 Da). In this work, the authors show that the quantity and length of the PEG soft segments influence the solubility and malleability of the products, which are water soluble and easily converted to nitrated analogues under standard reaction conditions. Inert and nitrated derivatives containing longer PEG segments showed the ability to self‐heal. The ...

The effects of B and P codoping on the impurity formation energies and electronic properties of Si nanocrystals (Si-nc) are calculated by a first-principles method. We show that, if carriers in the Si-nc are perfectly compensated by simultaneous doping with n- and p-type impurities, the Si-nc undergo a minor structural distortion around the impurities and that the formation energies are always smaller than those for the corresponding single-doped cases. The band gap of the codoped Si-nc is strongly ...

Apo chicken liver bile acid-binding protein has been structurally characterized by NMR. The dynamic behavior of the protein in its apo- and holo-forms, complexed with chenodeoxycholate, has been determined via 15N relaxation and steady state heteronuclear 15N(1H) nuclear Overhauser effect measurements. The dynamic parameters were obtained at two pH values (5.6 and 7.0) for the apoprotein and at pH 7.0 for the holoprotein, using the model free approach. Relaxation studies, performed at three different ...

Dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) in resting-state fMRI holds promise to deliver candidate biomarkers for clinical applications. However, the reliability and interpretability of dFC metrics remain contested. Despite a myriad of methodologies and resulting measures, few studies have combined metrics derived from different conceptualizations of brain functioning within the same analysis - perhaps missing an opportunity for improved interpretability. Using a complexity-science approach, we assessed ...
