Forensic entomologists typically use either succession models for postmortem interval (PMI) estimates or development-based models for minimum PMI (PMIMIN) estimates. Development-based age estimates are calculated with durations of immature stadia and can also include morphological data such as larval size. For developmental data, the first and second instar stages are typically brief with little variation in larval length. The third instar, a much longer stage by comparison, is prone to considerable ...

Abstract Prevention of HIV outbreaks among people who inject drugs remains a challenge to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States. The first legal syringe services program (SSP) in Florida implemented routine screening in 2018 leading to the identification of ten anonymous HIV seroconversions. The SSP collaborated with the Department of Health to conduct an epidemiologic investigation. All seven acute HIV seroconversions were linked to care (86% within 30 days) and achieved viral suppression ( ...

Because wildlife and livestock compete for grazing resources, biodiversity conservation and livestock ranching typically have been portrayed as conflicting uses of African savannas. Here, we offer an alternative perspective by describing a savanna ecosystem in central Kenya where wildlife and livestock exhibit a suite of potential positive interactions. For example, treating livestock with an acaricide offers the unintended benefit of removing ticks from the landscape, a result that has now been ...

Direct medical costs (method use, side effects, and unintended pregnancies) associated with 15 contraceptive methods were modeled from the perspectives of a private payer and a publicly funded program. Endothelia determine blood-to-tissue solute delivery, yet glucose transit is poorly understood. To illuminate mechanisms, we tracked [3H]-2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) in human adipose-tissue microvascular endothelial cells. 2-DG uptake was largely facilitated by the glucose transporters GLUT1 and GLUT3. Once in the cytosol, >80% of 2-DG became phosphorylated and ∼20% incorporated into glycogen, suggesting that transported glucose is readily accessible to cytosolic enzymes. Interestingly, a fraction of intracellular ...

Cardiomyocyte proliferation is an important source of new myocardium during heart development and regeneration. Consequently, mutations in drivers of cardiomyocyte proliferation cause congenital heart disease, and infarcted human hearts scar because cardiomyocytes exit the cell cycle postnatally. To boost cardiomyocyte proliferation in either setting, critical regulators must be identified. Through an ENU screen in zebrafish, the liebeskummer (lik) mutant was isolated and described as having elevated ...

Objective The catheter status of patients who presented with loss of intrathecal baclofen (ITB) therapy effectiveness was investigated using measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure transmitted through the catheter fluid path to the pump. A mother and female calf humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) pair were observed at an atypical location, 72 nmi inland in the Port of Sacramento, California, on 16 May 2007. Both animals had lacerations, suggesting sharp trauma from a boat strike. Photographs taken over 11 d showed generalized deterioration of skin condition and necrotic wound edges. A study of phenylalanine films of different thicknesses from submonolayer to 55 nm on Si wafers has been made using Bin+ and C60+ cluster primary ions in static SIMS. This shows that the effect of film thickness on ion yield is very similar for all primary ions, with an enhanced molecular yield at approximately 1 monolayer attributed to substrate backscattering. The static SIMS ion yields of phenylalanine at different thicknesses are, in principle, the equivalent of a static SIMS depth profile, ...

Despite efforts by the U.S. Department of Defense to train behavioral health (BH) providers in evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), numerous barriers limit EBP implementation. A context-tailored implementation approach called TACTICS (Targeted Assessment and Context-Tailored Implementation of Change Strategies) holds promise for increasing the use of EBPs such as prolonged exposure therapy (PE) in military treatment facilities. TACTICS combines a needs assessment, ...

ABSTRACT Introduction Prolonged exposure therapy is an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder that is underutilized in health systems, including the military health system. Organizational barriers to prolonged exposure implementation have been hypothesized but not systematically examined. This multisite project sought to identify barriers to increasing the use of prolonged exposure across eight military treatment facilities and describe potential solutions to addressing these barriers. ...

Most research to understand postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID, has focused on adults, with less known about this complex condition in children. Research is needed to characterize pediatric PASC to enable studies of underlying mechanisms that will guide future treatment.
