Abstract A recently described human megakaryocytic tumor cell line was analyzed for the presence of growth factor activity and was found to produce large quantities of transforming growth factor b̃‐like (TGF‐b̃) and basic fibroblast growth factor‐like (bFGF) activities. Growth factor activities were identified using a radioreceptor assay for the TGF‐b̃‐like activity, a heparin‐binding assay for the b‐FGF‐like activity, and a demonstration of distinct biological activities for each type of factor. ...

In the setting of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), pedal arch interrogation by ultrasound has not been well described. Patients with noncompressible vessels and/or open wounds of the foot may preclude the use of ankle-brachial indices, toe pressure measurements, or TcPO2, respectively. We propose that pedal artery interrogations with Pedal Acceleration Time (PAT) can be a predictor for limb salvage in patients with Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI).A retrospective review of a prospectively ...

We report the results of the first clinical study on the use of a hypertonic saline-dextran solution for the prehospital management of hypotensive victims of penetrating trauma. During a 4-month period, 48 trauma patients with penetrating injuries and a prehospital systolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or less were infused in-field with 250 ml of either a hypertonic saline-dextran solution or the crystalloid plasmalyte A. There were no complications associated with the infusion of the hypertonic saline- ...

The Ceralas D15 diode laser is a GaAlAs diode laser that delivers up to 15 watts of optical power at 980 nm using a quartz fiber delivery system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Ceralas D15 laser as an adjunct tool in wound care. Ulcers were treated with the laser once every two weeks for a minimum of four treatments. During this time, the patients continued their previously prescribed treatment. The change in area of the ulcers and the change in bacterial count were evaluated following ...

Ankle-brachial index (ABI) and duplex ultrasound (DUS) are accepted standardized tests performed on patients with suspected peripheral arterial disease. In the nondiabetic patient, ABIs can be a reliable test for disease above the level of the ankle. Toe brachial index (TBI) is also an accepted modality to test for small vessel disease. However, ABIs and TBIs fall short in providing a complete evaluation of arterial flow especially in pedal arteries in the setting of noncompressible arteries. Direct ...

Arterial duplex ultrasound (DUS) and ankle-brachial indices (ABIs) are accepted methods for assessing lower limb arterial perfusion. However, in a significant number of diabetic patients, medial wall calcification often precludes an ABI measurement. Direct, noninvasive duplex imaging of the pedal arch in the setting of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has not been well evaluated. Although plantar arch interrogation is new to vascular ultrasound, imaging the plantar arteries appears to be a reliable ...

Invasive therapies such as catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) and/or mechanical thrombectomy with or without angioplasty and stenting and in some cases open operative thrombectomy improves venous patency, venous valve function, and quality of life in patients with acute iliofemoral DVT. Evaluation of the pedal arteries has not been well evaluated by noninvasive duplex ultrasound. It offers an alternative approach that directly studies the angiosome supply of the foot. The goal of this article is to describe the technique, protocol, and criteria to properly evaluate the pedal arteries of the foot with noninvasive duplex ultrasound.

Abstract Although renewable sources of energy including geothermal, hydropower, wind, solar and biomass are utilized by the Philippines, coal-fired power plants remain the main source of electrical energy consumed by Filipino households. To lessen the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels, new and innovative sources of renewable energy should be explored. Plant-Microbial Fuel Cells (PMFCs) are a promising renewable energy technology that can be used to supplement our demand for electricity. PMFCs utilize ...

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive brain cancer, recurs because glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) are resistant to all standard therapies. We showed that GSCs, but not normal astrocytes, are sensitive to lysis by healthy allogeneic natural killer (NK) cells in vitro. Mass cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing of primary tumor samples revealed that GBM tumor-infiltrating NK cells acquired an altered phenotype associated with impaired lytic function relative to matched peripheral blood ...

Children with epilepsy are at risk of having their anticonvulsant regimens disrupted during the home-to-hospital transition. We sought to estimate the frequency of anticonvulsant medication errors during transition into the hospital in children with epilepsy hospitalized for reasons other than seizures, and to examine factors associated with the occurrence of such errors. We examined the medical records to identify errors related to anticonvulsant administration during the transition into the hospital ...

Steal phenomenon after upper extremity hemodialysis access is a clinical diagnosis and consists of signs and symptoms ranging from pain during dialysis to tissue loss. Duplex ultrasonography of the access site and limb arterial perfusion often serves as an adjunct to the diagnosis but can have limitations and there is no specific duplex measurement that indicates that an intervention will be a success. Systems approaches have great potential for application in predictive ecology. In this paper, we present a range of examples, where systems approaches are being developed and applied at a range of scales in the field of global change and biogeochemical cycling. Systems approaches range from Bayesian calibration techniques at plot scale, through data assimilation methods at regional to continental scales, to multi-disciplinary numerical model applications at country to global scales. We provide examples ...

We have established that pedal acceleration time (PAT) in nondiabetic limbs are highly correlative with ankle-brachial indices. We propose that PAT can be utilized in diabetic patients with noncompressible vessels and is an excellent predictor of wound healing. We focused on patients with diabetes and isolated infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease. Fifty-four limbs ...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain cancer with limited therapeutic options. Natural killer (NK) cells are innate immune cells with strong anti-tumor activity and may offer a promising treatment strategy for GBM. We compared the anti-GBM activity of NK cells engineered to express interleukin (IL)-15 or IL-21. Using multiple in vivo models, IL-21 NK cells were superior to IL-15 NK cells both in terms of safety and long-term anti-tumor activity, with locoregionally administered IL-15 NK cells proving ...
