BackgroundSurvival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is still low. For every minute without resuscitation the likelihood of survival decreases. One critical step is initiation of immediate, high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The aim of this subgroup analysis of data collected for the European Registry of Cardiac Arrest Study number 2 (EuReCa TWO) was to investigate the association between OHCA survival and two types of bystander CPR namely: chest compression only CPR (CConly) ...

Many real-life optimization problems can be formulated in Boolean logic as MaxSAT, a class of problems where the task is finding Boolean assignments to variables satisfying the maximum number of logical constraints. Since MaxSAT is NP-hard, no algorithm is known to efficiently solve these problems. Here we present a continuous-time analog solver for MaxSAT and show that the scaling of the escape rate, an invariant of the solver's dynamics, can predict the maximum number of satisfiable constraints, ...

Abstract Modeling of dispersion of air pollutants in the atmosphere is one of the most important and challenging scientific problems. There are several natural and anthropogenic events where passive or chemically active compounds are emitted into the atmosphere. The effect of these chemical species can have serious impacts on our environment and human health. Modeling the dispersion of air pollutants can predict this effect. Therefore, development of various model strategies is a key element for ...

Numerical solution of reaction–diffusion equations in three dimensions is one of the most challenging applied mathematical problems. Since these simulations are very time consuming, any ideas and strategies aiming at the reduction of CPU time are important topics of research. A general and robust idea is the parallelization of source codes/programs. Recently, the technological development of graphics hardware created a possibility to use desktop video cards to solve numerically intensive problems. ...

In the past years considerable attention has been devoted to designing and controlling patterns at the microscale using bottom-up self-assembling techniques. The precipitation process proved itself to be a good candidate for building complex structures. Therefore, the techniques and ideas to control the precipitation processes in space and in time play an important role. We present here a simple and technologically applicable technique to produce arbitrarily shaped precipitation (Liesegang) patterns. ...

The need for repeated treatment of restenosis of a treated vessel remains the main limitation of percutaneous coronary revascularization. Abstract. Discovering ore deposits is becoming increasingly difficult, and this is particularly true in areas of glaciated terrains. As a potential exploration tool for such terrains, we test the vectoring capacities of trace element and sulfur isotope characteristics of pyrite, combined with quantitative statistical methods of whole-rock geochemical datasets. Our target is the Rajapalot gold–cobalt project in northern Finland, where metamorphosed Paleoproterozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks ...

Abstract The Juomasuo Au–Co deposit, currently classified as an orogenic gold deposit with atypical metal association, is located in the Paleoproterozoic Kuusamo belt in northeastern Finland. The volcano-sedimentary sequence that hosts the deposit was intensely altered, deformed, and metamorphosed to greenschist facies during the 1.93–1.76 Ga Svecofennian orogeny. In this study, we investigate the temporal relationship between Co and Au deposition and the relationship of metal enrichment with protolith ...

Behavioral homogeneity is often critical for the functioning of network systems of interacting entities. In power grids, whose stable operation requires generator frequencies to be synchronized--and thus homogeneous--across the network, previous work suggests that the stability of synchronous states can be improved by making the generators homogeneous. Here, we show that a substantial additional improvement is possible by instead making the generators suitably heterogeneous. We develop a general ...

Abstract Volcanic rocks in Archean and Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts are abundant and have been suggested as a potential Au source for orogenic Au deposits. The behavior of Au during metamorphism of these rocks is, however, poorly known. We present ultra-low-detection-limit Au analyses from a suite of variably metamorphosed rocks from the Archean La Grande subprovince, Canada, and the Paleoproterozoic Central Lapland greenstone belt, Finland. Both areas are well endowed in Au and have great ...

Symmetry breaking--the phenomenon in which the symmetry of a system is not inherited by its stable states--underlies pattern formation, superconductivity, and numerous other effects. Recent theoretical work has established the possibility of converse symmetry breaking (CSB), a phenomenon in which the stable states are symmetric only when the system itself is not. This includes scenarios in which interacting entities are required to be nonidentical in order to exhibit identical behavior, such as in ...

Abstract The relative and absolute timing of orogenic gold deposits in complex structural settings are active and challenging topics of research, especially in Precambrian greenstone belts. The Suurikuusikko gold deposit in Central Lapland Greenstone Belt is currently the largest primary gold producing deposit in Europe, located on a slight bend of the strike-slip Kiistala shear zone (KiSZ). Gold is refractory and locked inside arsenopyrite and pyrite. In this study, different structural features ...

In the first approach, we define the fuzzy memberships of each geoscientific parameter separately ...
