This study investigates the role of the polymeric binder on the properties and performance of an intumescent coating. Waterborne resins of different types (vinylic, acrylic, and styrene-acrylic) were incorporated in an intumescent paint formulation, and characterized extensively in terms of thermal degradation behavior, intumescence thickness, and thermal insulation. Thermal microscopy images of charred foam development provided further information on the particular performance of each type of coating ...

Abstract Graphene nanoplatelets ( GNPs ) were directly dispersed in poly(vinyl acetate) ( PVAc ) latex in concentrations from 0.05 up to 2 wt% (based on dry weight), without using additional surfactants or dispersants. Stable dispersions were obtained due to interaction of the GNPs with protective colloids (poly(vinyl alcohol) and hydroxyethylcellulose) originally present in the latex. This caused an increase in viscosity and accentuated the pseudoplastic behavior of the latex, as evidenced by rheological ...

It has been shown that wood particleboards bonded with sour cassava starch can display low density combined with good physico-mechanical performance, thanks to starch being able to produce a strong foam that fills the interparticular space. Here we optimize the pressing conditions for the production of these panels. The procedure involved hot-plate pressing in two stages: (1) lowering the top platen to a specified thickness for a duration designated as pressing time, followed by (2) raising the top ...

Single-use plastic items made of non-biodegradable and fossil-based materials have been identified as a major environmental problem in modern society. Food packaging materials represent an important fraction of these, and replacement with biosourced, sustainable and low-cost alternatives, is a key priority. In the present work, and for the first time, trays suitable for some food packaging applications were produced by the hot-pressing of brewer's spent grains (BSG, a low added-value byproduct of ...

Microparticles of corn starch and chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, produced by the solvent exchange technique, are studied as reinforcement fillers for thermoplastic corn starch plasticized with glycerol. The presence of 10% w/w chitosan in the microparticles is shown to be essential to guaranteeing effective crosslinking, as demonstrated by water solubility assays. Crosslinked chitosan forms an interpenetrating polymer network with starch chains, producing microparticles with a very low ...

Abstract This work evaluated the use of allyl fatty acid esters derived from vegetable oil (palmitic acid, soybean and sunflower oils) as reactive coalescing agents in a waterborne latex system. Allyl fatty acid derivatives (AFAD) from vegetable oils were synthesized by two different processes. The synthesis was monitored by IR‐spectroscopy and the final product characterized by FT‐IR, GC–MS, 1 H and 13 C NMR. The presence of conjugated double bonds in the aliphatic chain was confirmed, which is a ...

Wood composites are materials made by bonding together wood and adhesives into a large material that can be used for different purposes. Nowadays, lightweight materials play an important role in several industries: aerospace, building and furniture. The reduction of weight is desirable for economic reasons (materials and transportation costs) and environmental reasons (resources, eco-efficiency). Once wood composites are employed in these industries, low density is a desired property. There are several ...

This work reports the tribological performance of a self-lubricating epoxy-PTFE coating modified with oxidized graphene nanoplatelets (GNPox) and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [DMIM][NTf2] ionic liquid, alone and in combination. [DMIM][NTf2] was incorporated without encapsulation, which is shown not to hinder coating adhesion for the tested applications. Crossed-cylinders tribological testing of coatings under different load conditions showed synergistic effects from ...

A recently made available form of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP‐C) is investigated for the first time as reinforcement filler for PLA. GNP‐C, with thickness of about 2 nm and length 1–2 μm, was incorporated at different loadings (0.1–0.5 wt%) in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by melt blending. The effect of varying mixing time and mixing intensity was studied and the best conditions were identified, corresponding to mixing for 20 min at 50 rpm and 180°C. Thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and ...

The materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), size exclusion chromatography (GPC-SEC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile testing, ...

Graphene-based materials (GBMs) have recognized potential for biomedical applications, however different production methods and treatments originate divergent biocompatibility. In this work, two commercially available graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were studied, differing in platelet size: GNP-C, with 1–2 μm, and GNP-M, with 5 μm. GNP-M was oxidized using KMnO4 in different ratios (1:3 and 1:6), leading to GNP-M-ox-1:3 and GNP-M-ox-1:6. The effect of oxidation and size on biocompatibility was evaluated ...

In this work, a PTFE-based self-lubricating coating containing microencapsulated [HMIM][NTf2] ionic liquid (IL) lubricant is reported. The microcapsules, made of polysulphone, are prepared by solvent evaporation. In order to allow incorporation in the thin PTFE coating layer, which is applied by spraying, the capsules were produced with small sizes (below 10 μm). Their physico-chemical characterization is presented in terms of SEM/EDS, TGA, FTIR and particle size distribution analysis. It is shown ...

Graphene-based materials (GBMs) have broad potential applications in biomedical engineering and biotechnology. However, existing studies regarding biological effects of GBMs often present contradictory or inconclusive results. This work presents a review of published data in order to provide a critical overview of the state of the art. Firstly, the distinct physical–chemical nature of the GBMs available is clarified, as well as the production methods involved. The review then discusses the available ...

The incorporation of graphene-based materials has been shown to improve mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). In this work, PLA films and composite PLA films incorporating two graphene-based materials – graphene oxide (GO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) – were prepared and characterized regarding not only biocompatibility, but also surface topography, chemistry and wettability. The presence of both fillers changed the films surface topography, increasing the roughness, and modified the wettability – ...

Abstract Nanocomposite thin films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were produced incorporating small amounts (0.2 to 1 wt%) of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP). The films were prepared by solvent‐casting. Mechanical properties were evaluated for plasticized (by residual solvent) and unplasticized films. Plasticized nanocomposite films presented yield strength and Young's modulus about 100% higher than those of pristine PLA. For unplasticized films improvements in tensile strength and Young' ...
