A correct simulation of the dispersion during wintertime thermal inversions is important not only to improve the physical understanding of the phenomena but also to design and evaluate strategies to improve air quality. In this study WRF with the multilayer urban canopy scheme BEP-BEM is used to simulate the dispersion during one of those episodes over Madrid, Spain, using a passive tracer representing NOx. The results are compared against NOx measurements obtained at 24 ground stations, grouped ...

We report on the fabrication of the first MEMS micropump including an integrated pressure sensor. The signal of this sensor allows direct insight into the pump's operating dynamics and enables real-time self-monitoring. We demonstrate the changes in the sensor signal under different pumping conditions, including the presence of air in the pumping chamber and a downstream occlusions. Deviations from normal operating conditions create clear and characteristic deviations from the normal signal. These ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results achieved after the use of lateral minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) in oligotrophic humerus nonunions resulting from failed intramedullary nailing (IM).We evaluated nine patients with humerus nonunion after failed locked intramedullary nailing, all treated using 3.5-mm locked compression plates (LCP) placed through lateral minimally invasive approaches, between 2010 and 2016. Patient's age averaged 39.7 years. All nonunions were diaphyseal ...

Background & AimsGenetic ancestry or racial differences in health outcomes exist in diseases associated with systemic inflammation (eg, COVID-19). This study aimed to investigate the association of genetic ancestry and race with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), which is characterized by acute systemic inflammation, multi-organ failure, and high risk of short-term death.MethodsThis prospective cohort study analyzed a comprehensive set of data, including genetic ancestry and race among several others, ...

Abstract The timing of the local last glacial maximum in the mountains of the Northern Iberian Peninsula is not synchronous with the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) probably due to the marginal position of the Northern Iberian Peninsula within the European continent. The study of a Cantabrian massif, the Asón platform and summits, provides new data on the extent and timing of the local last glaciation. Here we can place the last maximal extent of glaciers during Early Würm, according to OSL dating ...

The influence of the ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) on the glaciers of Svalbard has been well documented for a long time. This paper presents new data on the LIA maximum glacier extent and retreat by aerial photo interpretation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools. We also make cartography where all results are shown in greater detail. During the LIA maximum, we find that the glacier area of Svalbard was 38,871 km 2 , and since then, the total glacier area loss in the archipelago has been 5096 km 2 ( ...

Heat waves pose additional risks to urban spaces because of the additional heat provided by urban heat islands (UHIs) as well as poorer air quality. Our study focuses on the analysis of UHIs, human thermal comfort, and air quality for the city of Madrid, Spain during heat waves. Heat wave periods are defined using the long-term records from the urban station Madrid-Retiro. Two types of UHI were studied: the canopy layer UHI (CLUHI) was evaluated using air temperature time-series from five meteorological ...

Persistent wintertime inversions over cities are the most critical conditions for air quality, and also one of the most challenging situations to simulate with a meteorological model. In this study, the ability of the meteorological Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, coupled with the multilayer urban canopy parameterization BEP-BEM (Building Effect Parameterization - Building Energy Model), to simulate the evolution of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) structure over the city of Madrid, Spain, ...

A 74-year-old woman with a history of essential thrombocythemia was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit because of atypical chest pain. The transthoracic echocardiogram showed normal left ventricular (LV) diameter and preserved regional and global systolic function. The patient evolved with left hemiparesis ...

River areas are undoubtedly among the most valuable territorial areas in Europe, not only in terms of their eco-landscape and use but also, culturally. However, there is currently a sharp reduction in the extension and increase of deterioration of riverbanks around the world. A substantial part of losses and deterioration are associated with the artificialization of the territories, derived mainly from a less than respectful urbanization around these landscapes. Urban and peri-urban riverbanks are ...

Since hundreds of clinical trials are investigating the use of multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) for therapeutic purposes, effective delivery of the cells to target tissues is critical. We have found an unexplored mechanism, by which basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2) induces expression of fucosyltransferase 8 (FUT8) to increase core fucosylations of N-linked glycans of membrane-associated proteins, including several integrin subunits. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments show that FUT8 is both ...
