Background: The identification of peripheral artery disease (PAD) can help prevent further progression of the disease and additional complications, considering that this condition is a risk factor for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death. Objective: To assess the prevalence of PAD in the Baependi Heart Study and investigate associated risk factors in different age groups. Methods: A total of 1,627 individuals (of both genders and aged 18 - 102 years) residing in the municipality of Baependi ( ...

Abstract Aim Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical ...

Abstract Aim Tropical forests store 25% of global carbon and harbour 96% of the world's tree species, but it is not clear whether this high biodiversity matters for carbon storage. Few studies have teased apart the relative importance of forest attributes and environmental drivers for ecosystem functioning, and no such study exists for the tropics. Location Neotropics. Methods We relate aboveground biomass ( AGB ) to forest attributes (diversity and structure) and environmental drivers (annual rainfall ...

The São Paulo and São Pedro Archipelago (SPA) forms an emergent part of the São Paulo transform fault zone in the Equatorial Atlantic. In the present study, the uplift rate of this part of the transform in the Late Quaternary was investigated, in order to determine its origin. Uplift rates were determined by dating sedimentary and biological paleo-sea level indicators. The findings are: (a) paleo-sea level indicators yielded ages corresponding to the Late Pleistocene and Mid- to Late Holocene; (b) ...

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is characterized by the expression of the aggregative adherence pattern to cultured epithelial cells. In this study, we determined the phenotypic and genotypic relationships among 86 EAEC strains of human and animal (calves, piglets and horses) feces. Serotypes and the presence of EAEC virulence markers were determined, and these results were associated with ribotyping. Strains harboring aggR (typical EAEC) of human origin were found carrying several of the ...

The thalamus is crucial for sleep regulation and the pathophysiology of idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE), and may serve as the underlying basis for the links between the two. We investigated this using EEG-fMRI and a specific emphasis on the role and functional connectivity (FC) of the thalamus. We defined three types of thalamic FC: thalamocortical, inter-hemispheric thalamic, and intra-hemispheric thalamic. Patients and controls differed in all three measures, and during wakefulness and sleep, ...

A taxonomic revision of the Brazilian species of Passiflora subgenus Decaloba is presented. This morphological study is based on their vegetative, floral, pollen, and fruit structures. Our treatment recognizes 20 taxa divided among five supersections belonging to the subgenus in Brazil. Passiflora candollei is reported for the first time in Amazonas State, the resurrection of P. longilobis is supported, and new synonymy for P. pohlii is introduced. A key for the identification of the taxa, along ...

Beer is a very complex mixture, being an alcoholic beverage obtained by fermentation processes. The consumption and production of specialty beers in Brazil have increased in the past years; however, most Brazilian brewers still depend on imported commercial starter yeast strains and raw materials. Our data also indicate that volatile profile of Brazilian beers is more influenced by raw materials. The analysis of volatile compounds in beer is important for its quality control, and the presence of ...

Beachrocks are a common feature along the Brazilian coast and although their occurrence in intertidal zones is concentrated in tropical regions, similar formations have been described submerged on the continental shelf in subtropical regions. In the state of Paraná, submerged sandstones are present on the continental shelf and their formation could be associated with the cementation of beach sediments. This would provide an excellent indicator of the stabilization of the coastline during lower sea- ...

Furthermore, most existing studies make use of the Point Kinetics equations. In this context, this work presents a proposal to implement ...

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common form of adult epilepsy in surgical series. Currently, the only characteristic used to predict poor response to clinical treatment in this syndrome is the presence of hippocampal sclerosis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in genes encoding drug transporter and metabolism proteins could influence response to therapy. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether combining information from clinical variables as well as SNPs in candidate genes ...

Kluyveromyces marxianus CCT 7735 offers advantages to ethanol production over Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including thermotolerance and the ability to convert lactose to ethanol. Temporal lobe epilepsy, a common drug-resistant epilepsy in adults, is primarily a limbic network disorder associated with predominant unilateral hippocampal pathology. However, similarities and differences of both atypical asymmetry and regional atrophy measures have not ...

Coarse mesh nodal methods are widely used in the analysis of nuclear reactors. However, these methods provide only average values of the neutron fluxes. From a safety point of view, it is important to have an accurate analysis of the pin to pin flux distribution that nodal methods are not able to provide.
