In this work, ten selected pesticides of different chemical groups, indicated to orange culture, were extracted and determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using both electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) operating in the positive ion detection mode. Applying a variables selection technique verified that cone voltage, source temperature and drying-gas flow-rate are the critical variables when the ESI was used, while cone voltage was found to ...

Background and aims Guarana is widely consumed by athletes, either in supplements or in soft drinks, under the belief that it presents ergogenic and "fat burning" effects. We examined the effect of guarana supplementation (14 days) upon aspects of lipid metabolism in sedentary (C) and trained rats (T). Methods To isolate the effect of caffeine from that of other components of guarana, we adopted two different doses of whole extract (G1—0.130g/kg; G2—0.325g/kg) or decaffeinated extract (DG1, DG2). Background/Aims: Carnitine is a co-factor of the enzymatic system involved in long chain fatty acid transport across the mitochondrial membrane. This physiological role of carnitine raised the hypothesis that this compound could act as a ‘fat burner’ by optimizing fat oxidation and consequently reducing its availability for storage. Our aim was to verify whether carnitine supplementation could maximize fat mass loss in trained rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats (200 ...

Exercise has been widely believed to be a preventive and therapeutic aid in the treatment of various pathophysiological conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. A common problem associated with such pathologies is cachexia, characterized by progressive weight loss and depletion of lean and fat body mass, and is linked to poor prognosis. As this syndrome comprises changes in many physiological systems, it is tempting to assume that the modulation of the psychoneuroimmunoendocrine axis ...

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effect of carbohydrate supplementation upon some aspects of the immune function in athletes during intense indoor cycling. Methods: Twelve male athletes cycled for 20 min at a velocity corresponding to 90% of that obtained at the anaerobic threshold and rested for 20 min. This protocol was repeated six times. The athletes received, during the trial, water ad libitum, or a solution of carbohydrate (95% glucose polymers and 5% fructose) at 10% (w/v), 1 g kg h every 20 min, ...

Asthma is an inflammatory lung disease characterized by cell migration, bronchoconstriction and hyperresponsiveness, and can be induced, as an experimental model, by ovalbumin sensitization followed by a challenge. In addition to the well‐known immunostimulatory effects of melatonin, research has identified some of its anti‐inflammatory properties. In this study, we evaluated the influence of pinealectomy and melatonin administration on cell migration in an experimental model of allergic airway ...

Intense long-duration exercise could lead to immune suppression through a decrease in the circulating level of plasma glutamine. The decrease in plasma glutamine concentration as a consequence of intense long-duration exercise was reversed, in some cases, by supplementing the diet of the athletes with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). To better address this question, we have evaluated some blood parameters (lymphocyte proliferation, the level of plasma cytokines, plasma glutamine concentration, and ...

The following parameters were studied: cell migration in response to thioglycollate and BCG stimuli, macrophage phagocytic capacity, H 2 O 2 production, glucose and glutamine metabolism as indicated by the measurement of enzyme activities, the utilization of metabolites and production and oxidation of substrates. The results indicate that insulin: (1) did not affect cell migration in response to thioglycollate ...

Abstract The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing ...

A comprehensive new inventory of Brazilian plants and fungi was published just in time to meet a 2010 Convention on Biological Diversity target and offers important insights into this biodiversity's global significance. Brazil is the home to the world's richest flora (40,989 species; 18,932 endemic) and includes two of the hottest hotspots: Mata Atlântica (19,355 species) and Cerrado (12,669 species). Although the total number of known species is one-third lower than previous estimates, the absolute ...
