Fungi naturally present in olive trees were identified and tested for their antagonistic potential against Colletotrichum acutatum. A total of 14 isolates were identified, 12 belonged to genera Alternaria, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Anthrinium, Chaetomium, Diaporthe, Nigrospora, one to family Xylariaceae and one was unclassified. All fungal isolates showed some inhibitory action over the growth of C. acutatum during dual culture growth, however, when agar-diffusible tests were performed only ...

Copigmentation and the anti-copigmentation effects can be mimicked by the interaction of anthocyanin's model compounds respectively with cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The complex network of chemical reactions displayed by this family of compounds includes the colored flavylium cation, AH(+), and quinoidal base, A, along with the colorless hemiketal, B, cis-chalcone, Cc, and trans-chalcone, Ct. Whereas AH(+) is stable only at very acidic pH values, the remaining species are formed ...

Abstract Novel mono and dialkylbipyridinium (viologens) cations combined with iodide, bromide, or bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [NTf 2 ] as anions were developed. Selective alkylation synthetic methodologies were optimized in order to obtain the desired salts in moderate to high yields and higher purities. All prepared mono‐ and dialkylbipyridinium salts were completely characterized by 1 H, 13 C, and 19 F NMR spectroscopy, Fourier‐transform IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis (in the case of ...

These biomaterials were characterized in terms of morphology, particle size distribution, porosity and pore size, specific surface area and density. The chemical composition and structure of the materials were accessed ...

The time-course evolution of ammonium concentration has been examined in the flood water during the first 25 min of tidal inundation. The way this transport fluctuates with the tidal ranges and wind conditions was investigated.Flood water was collected at three sites, located along a transect from the lower to the upper intertidal area of the Tagus estuary. At spring and intermediate tides, the periods of air exposure vary slightly along the transect due to the high tidal amplitude and the flatness ...

Abstract Theories have been put forward on the etiology of sialoliths; however, a comprehensive understanding of their growth mechanisms is lacking. In an attempt to fill this gap, the current study has evaluated the internal architecture and growth patterns of a set of 30 independent specimens of sialoliths characterized at different scales by computed microtomography and electron microscopy. Tomography reconstructions showed cores in most of the sialoliths. The cores were surrounded by concentric ...

The analysis presented in this article is based on a detailed study of a wood formwork fire accident during bridge construction. Two recent and similar fires in bridge formwork are also described. The fire characteristics, the inspection procedures, the simulation studies and the repair methods are described. The intent is to describe and characterize the typical damage, and to define an evaluation methodology for this type of situation.

The effect of methyl, hydroxyl, and chloride substituents in position 3 of the 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavylium core structure was studied. The stability, relative energy of each of chemical species (thermodynamics), and their rates of interconversion (kinetics) are very dependent on these substituents. By comparing the mole fraction distribution at equilibrium of the three multistate systems with the parent 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavylium, introduction of a methyl substituent in position 3 increases the mole ...

The color properties and stability of three types of 3-deoxyvitisins derived from peonidin (deoxyvitisin A, B and methyldeoxyvitisin) were studied using UV-Visible spectroscopy. Similarly to pyranoanthocyanins, the conjugated double bonds among pyranic rings C and D provide a higher electronic delocalization that prevents the nucleophilic attack of water at position 2 and the subsequent formation of the hemiketal and chalcone species. Consequently, besides the flavylium cation (AH+), neutral (A) and ...

Vineyard soil management can modify the nitrogen soil availability and, therefore, grape amino acid content. These compounds are precursors of biogenic amines, which have negative effects on wine quality and human health. The objective was to study whether the effect of conventional tillage and two cover crops (barley and clover) on grapevine nitrogen status could be related to wine biogenic amines. Over 4 years, soil NO3- -N, nitrogen content in leaf and wine biogenic amine concentration were determined. ...

Iron overload in the liver may occur in clinical conditions such as hemochromatosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and may lead to the deterioration of the normal liver architecture by mechanisms not well understood. Impaction of the fracture site is then performed with a nail that is broader than the remaining fragmented ...
