The understanding of rock-soil geochemical fluxes provides an important tool for evaluating natural environmental risk. In this research we compare the geochemical composition of soils (n = 249) collected on Santiago Island (Cape Verde) with their parent rocks (n = 96). Basalt and basanites units and overlying soils are relatively rich in Co, Sc, Mg, Ca, Fe, V, Ti, Ni, Cr, and Cu, whilst phonolitic-trachytic units and overlying soils are relatively rich in Zn, P, Sr, Mn, Ba, La, As, Th and Pb. An enrichment ...

Broadband broadcast and multicast wireless systems usually employ OFDM modulations (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) combined with non-uniform hierarchical constellations. However, these schemes are very prone to nonlinear distortion effects and have high carrier synchronization requirements. SC-FDE (Single-Carrier with Frequency-Domain Equalization) is an attractive alternative for OFDM, especially when an efficient power amplification is intended. In this paper we consider the use of ...

Introduction A hypercoagulable state has been recognized in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of single and combined thrombophilic abnormalities in patients from northern Portugal with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, without a history of thrombosis. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 116 patients (42 with ulcerative colitis, 74 with Crohn's disease), and 141 randomly chosen asymptomatic blood donors was carried out. ...

Antiretrovirals (ARVs) have been detected in aquatic ecosystems throughout the world; however, studies focused on assessing their ecotoxicological effects on marine aquatic organisms are still rare. In the present study, the predicted environmental concentration (PEC) of 13 ARVs was estimated for surface seawater from Santos Bay, Brazil, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) guidelines. The results indicated that all ARVs need to be assessed for their ecological effects, considering that ...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multifactorial chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease influenced by age, and by genetic and environmental factors. The role of genetic predisposition in PD has been increasingly acknowledged and a number of relevant genes have been identified (e.g., genes encoding α-synuclein, parkin, and dardarin), while the search for environmental factors that influence the pathogenesis of PD has only recently begun to escalate. In recent years, the investigation on paraquat ( ...

Companies need to develop more sustainable management models to support a strategy focused on the environment and society, preventing the sole ambition to maximize economic profits. Several specific tools and frameworks have been developed for the implementation of sustainability management. However, the isolated adoption of new management practices could increase bureaucracy and constrain the development of an effective and systematic sustainability strategy. Based on the development of four case ...

Two of the main problems encountered in flexible pavements are the stripping of coarse aggregates and the formation of rut depth due to increases in the volume of road traffic and heavy vehicle loads, especially in areas where speeds are low. The existence of rut depth also affects the comfort and safety of road users due to the water accumulation on the pavement surface and reducing tire/pavement friction, which can lead to hydroplaning phenomena. In this research, it was proven that the use of ...

The etiology of diseases is multifactorial, involving genetic, environmental, and lifestyle-related behaviors. Considering the pathway that involves behavioral processes, a huge body of empirical evidence has shown that some healthy behaviors such as non-smoking, any or moderate alcohol consumption, a healthy diet, (e.g., fruit and vegetable intake), and physical activity, decrease the risk of disease and mortality. This study aimed to explore the potential mediating effect of combined health behaviors ...

With the large number of individuals infected and recovered from Covid-19, there is intense discussion about the quality and duration of the immunity elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the possibility of disease recurrence. Here we report a case with strong clinical, epidemiological and laboratorial evidence of, not only reinfection by SARS-CoV-2, but also clinical recurrence of Covid-19.

In this study the authors propose a novel joint detection and phase noise estimation scheme suited for severely time-dispersive channels. The authors consider single-carrier modulations combined with frequency domain equalisation schemes where the wireless transmission is impaired with phase noise. An iterative frequency-domain equaliser is assumed on the receiver side and the phase noise is estimated and compensated for after the equalisation step and within each iteration of the equaliser. In ...

North Africa is a climatically and topographically complex region with unique biotic assemblages resulting from the combination of multiple biogeographic realms. Here, we assess the role of climate in promoting intra-specific diversification in a Palearctic relict, the North African fire salamander, Salamandra algira, using a combination of phylogenetic and population genetic analyses, paleoclimatic modelling and niche overlap tests. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic widely used to treat many types of bacterial infections. Although its properties, his clinical use is limited due to the occurrence of nephrotoxicity, which has been related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Carvedilol, an antihypertensive drug with strong antioxidant properties, has been tested in order to prevent gentamicin nephrotoxicity. This study aimed to test this hypothesis using a rat model of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. Animals were treated ...

The nonselective contact herbicide, paraquat (PQ), is a strong pneumotoxicant, especially due to its accumulation in the lung through a polyamine uptake system and to its capacity to induce redox cycling, leading to oxidative stress-related damage. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the occurrence of apoptotic events in the lungs of male Wistar rats, 24, 48, and 96 h after PQ exposure (25 mg/kg ip) as well as the putative healing effects provided by sodium salicylate [(NaSAL), 200 mg/kg ip] ...

Considering that the main target organ for PQ toxicity is the lung and involves the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, inflammation, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and activation of transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, it may be hypothesized that an antidote against PQ poisonings should counteract ...
