50.3 M tons of wastes are annually produced at urban level in the EU-27. Sewage sludge, Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes (OFMSW) and food industrial wastewaters, are the major typologies of wastes produced at urban level. OFMSW and sewage sludge account for the 28 % and 23 % of the EU-27 wastes streams, respectively. Their abundance and the high content of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) make them very interesting as substrates in a biorefinery loop to produce biofuels and bio-based products. ...

Summary Fragmentation of tropical forests is a major driver of the global extinction crisis. A key question is understanding how fragmentation impacts phylogenetic diversity, which summarizes the total evolutionary history shared across species within a community. Conserving phylogenetic diversity decreases the potential of losing unique ecological and phenotypic traits and plays important roles in maintaining ecosystem function and stability. Our study was conducted in landscapes within the highly ...

Tropical forests store large amounts of carbon and high biodiversity, but are being degraded at alarming rates. The emerging global Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) agenda seeks to limit global climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the growth of trees. In doing so, it may also protect biodiversity as a free cobenefit, which is vital given the massive shortfall in funding for biodiversity conservation. We investigated whether natural forest regeneration on abandoned ...

This Research Communication describes, for the first time, the detection of HSP70 in saliva of dairy cows. Thermal stress is a major environmental stress that limits animal growth, metabolism, and productivity. The cellular response to heat stress involves the synthesis of heat shock proteins (HSPs), presumably to protect the functional stability of cells at increasing temperatures. HSP70 has been found to be present in cattle blood serum and may also be present in other secretory fluids, such as ...

Bone fractures to be corrected need stabilization of their extremities, which is achieved with the use of plates and screws. This research aimed to produce castor bean polyurethane (Ricinus communis), to make resorbable plate, structural and thermal analysis. The production was made by the glycerolysis of the triglycerides present in the oil, after addition of polyol/glycerol and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to form urethane structures, with and without addition of hydroxyapatite. The characterization ...

Fermented wastes have been demonstrated to be adequate sources for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production using mixed microbial cultures (MMC). In general, MMC processes are focused on the production of co-polymers containing 3-hydroxybutyrate (HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV), which limits the range of polymer properties and aplications. This study aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of producing a ter-polymer enriched in 3-hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) from a waste using a mixed-culture 3-stage process. ...

The present work aimed at evaluating the effect of O2 content in argon-based shielding gases over the arc cathodic emission behavior (which can lead to arc wandering) in wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of thin aluminum walls and its consequences over layer formation. The effect of O2 content on arc wandering was assessed by analyzing cathodic spot behavior through high-speed videography during Gas metal arc (GMA-AM) depositions. Superficial and geometric aspects were analyzed, as well as the ...

Under the UN-Decade of Ecosystem Restoration and Bonn Challenge, second-growth forest is promoted as a global solution to climate change, degradation and associated losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Second growth is often invaded by alien tree species and understanding how this impacts carbon stock and biodiversity recovery is key for restoration planning. We assessed carbon stock and tree diversity recovery in second growth invaded by two Acacia species and non-invaded second growth, ...

Most of the current materials used in food packaging are synthetic and non-degradable, raising environmental issues derived from the accumulation of plastics in landfills/waterways. The process involving mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) and waste-based substrates emerged as an alternative solution to reduce the market price of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). The selection of an efficient MMC that displays a significant PHA accumulation potential and a high growth rate is considered a key factor for the MMC PHA production feasibility. This study used a pilot plant to investigate the dynamics of growth vs storage in a mixed culture fed with fermented fruit waste under uncoupled carbon ...

Vitamin D has a well-known role in the calcium homeostasis associated with the maintenance of healthy bones. It increases the efficiency of the intestinal absorption of dietary calcium, reduces calcium losses in urine, and mobilizes calcium stored in the skeleton. However, vitamin D receptors are present ubiquitously in the human body and indeed, vitamin D has a plethora of non-calcemic functions. In contrast to most vitamins, sufficient vitamin D can be synthesized in human skin. However, its production ...

Because a large proportion of total operating costs for transportation companies goes towards energy, a reduction in energy operating costs, brought about by an increase in fleet fuel efficiency, or an increase in operational efficiency, results in a change in the relative cost of road freight transportation. This fact could result in an increase in the demand for such services. If this is true, the result would be an increase in total fuel consumption. Consequently, that part of the energy savings ...
