Nanocomposites based on vinyl alcohol-containing polymers and nanostructured gold have been efficiently prepared by a UV photo-reduction process. The very fast process provided dispersed gold nanoparticles with average diameters ranging from 3 to 20 nm depending on the host polymer matrix and the irradiation time. Uniaxial drawing of the irradiated Au/polymer nanocomposites favours the anisotropic distribution of packed assemblies of gold particles, providing oriented films with polarization-dependent ...

Background: Plant richness world-records have been reported to occur either in tropical rainforests, or, at smaller spatial scales, in chronically disturbed grasslands. The tight relationship between scale and record richness suggests that there is an unyielding limit to diversity. Hypotheses: If such limit exists, current records should hardly be beaten. Chronic disturbance in grasslands allows richness to approach the limit. Studied species: All vascular plants at the study site. Study site and ...

The SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected for the first time in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Currently, this virus has spread around the world, and new variants have emerged. This new pandemic virus provoked the rapid development of diagnostic tools, therapies and vaccines to control this new disease called COVID-19. Antibody detection by ELISA has been broadly used to recognize the number of persons infected with this virus or to evaluate the response of vaccinated individuals. As the pandemic spread, ...

Compressive spectral depth imaging (CSDI) is an emerging technology aiming to reconstruct spectral and depth information of a scene from a limited set of two-dimensional projections. CSDI architectures have conventionally relied on stereo setups that require the acquisition of multiple shots attained via dynamically programmable spatial light modulators (SLM). This work proposes a snapshot CSDI architecture that exploits both phase and amplitude modulation and uses a single image sensor. Specifically, ...

The carotid bodies (CBs) are chemosensory organs that respond to hypoxemia with transmitter neurosecretion, leading to a respiratory reflex response. It has been proposed that acetylcholine is a key regulator of transmitter release through activation of presynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). In the present work, we studied the identity of such nAChRs and their contribution to catecholamine release from CBs. Neonatal rat CBs were placed in a recording chamber for electrochemical recordings ...

Mining and metallurgy generate residues that may contain thallium (Tl), a highly toxic metal, for which it is currently not feasible to determine its geochemical speciation through X-ray absorption spectroscopy due to a combination of very low contents and the interference of accompanying high arsenic contents. Therefore, fractionation studies in residues and soils are required to analyze the mobility and bioavailability of this metal, which in turn provide information to infer its speciation. For ...

The zwitterion functionalization of cellulose with lysine was achieved in a two-step synthesis. The cellulose modification in each step of the synthesis was corroborated by FTIR and solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy. The zwitterionic character in the modified cellulose was determined by its isoelectric point using a titration curve vs. pH. The dye adsorption performance of the modified cellulose was evaluated with malachite green and indigo carmine solutions. Cellulose modification increases laccase ...

Abstract Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is considered a neurodevelopmental condition that is characterized by alterations in social interaction and communication, as well as patterns of restrictive and repetitive behaviors (RRBs). RRBs are defined as broad behaviors that comprise stereotypies, insistence on sameness, and attachment to objects or routines. RRBs can be divided into lower‐level behaviors (motor, sensory, and object‐manipulation behaviors) and higher‐level behaviors (restrictive ...

Over a century ago, bacterial extracts were found to be useful in cancer therapy, but this treatment modality was obviated for decades. Currently, in spite of the development and advances in chemotherapies and radiotherapy, failure of these conventional treatments still represents a major issue in the complete eradication of tumor cells and has led to renewed approaches with bacteria-based tumor therapy as an alternative treatment. In this context, live-attenuated bacteria, particularly Salmonella ...
