The Brazilian Microbiome Project (BMP) aims to assemble a Brazilian Metagenomic Consortium/Database. At present, many metagenomic projects underway in Brazil are widely known. Our goal in this initiative is to co-ordinate and standardize these together with new projects to come. It is estimated that Brazil hosts approximately 20 % of the entire world's macroorganism biological diversity. It is 1 of the 17 countries that share nearly 70 % of the world's catalogued animal and plant species, and is recognized ...

Abstract Smoke from vegetation fires affects air quality, atmospheric cycling, and the climate in the Amazon rain forest. A major unknown has remained the quantity of long-range transported smoke from Africa in relation to local and regional fire emissions. Here we quantify the abundance, seasonality, and properties of African smoke in central Amazonia. We show that it accounts for ~ 60% of the black carbon concentrations during the wet season and ~ 30% during the dry season. The African smoke influences ...

Abstract Chronic Venous Disorders (CVD) of the lower limbs are one of the most prevalent medical conditions, affecting 35% of adults in Europe and North America. Due to the exponential growth of the aging population and the worsening of CVD with age, it is expected that the healthcare costs and the resources needed for the treatment of CVD will increase in the coming years. The early diagnosis of CVD is fundamental in treatment planning, while the monitoring of its treatment is fundamental to assess ...

This paper presents a power electronic converter used to redistribute the power among the phases in unbalanced power systems, which is supposed to be designed based on the involved degree of unbalance. A bidirectional converter is chosen for this purpose, whose modeling is presented in the dq0 system. This solution can be considered as part of a unified control system, where conventional active power filters may be solely responsible for compensating harmonics and/or the tuning of passive filters ...

Abstract Among all proteins localized in the Golgi apparatus, a two-PDZ ( P SD95/ D lgA/ Z o-1) domain protein plays an important role in the assembly of the cisternae. This Golgi Reassembly and Stacking Protein (GRASP) has puzzled researchers due to its large array of functions and relevance in Golgi functionality. We report here a biochemical and biophysical study of the GRASP55/65 homologue in Cryptococcus neoformans (CnGRASP). Bioinformatic analysis, static fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopies, ...

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are mixtures of hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and hydrogen bond donors (HBD) with a melting point much lower than that of either of its components. They have been the focus of interest in past years due to their unique properties, low cost, and wide range of applications. Despite the attention given to DES and their claimed benignity when compared with ionic liquids, their environmental impact is poorly characterized and understood. In this work, the toxicity of some DES ...

The Ribeira de Iguape River (RIR) was historically contaminated by residues from mining activities. These activities ceased in the late 1990’s, but the residues remained deposited along the river banks. This study aimed to evaluate the sediment characteristics of the RIR in different hydro-meteorological conditions and detect eventual changes in the geochemistry. Three sampling surveys were conducted, in which sediments were collected in 6 sites, and then analyzed for sediment textures and metals ...

This study investigates the important role of Fe-oxide/hydroxide-rich bottom sediments, from two Brazilian tropical reservoirs, on P sequestration from the overlying waters, which decreases the risk of eutrophication. Data on P fractionation indicates that P adsorption capacity of sediments is predominantly associated with Fe, followed by orthosphosphate adsorbed onto Al hydr(oxides) and onto different forms of apatite (Ca–P). The soluble and loosely bound P-forms are low. To have a better understanding ...

Consumers are very concerned in "Protected Designation of Origin" (PDO) products, namely meat, since they associate these products to quality and healthy foods. Thus, it is necessary to implement analytical methodologies that could assure consumers about the products they purchase. Since this kind of meat is usually sold with no information concerning cattle sex, age and slaughter season, these characteristics were intentionally not taken into account. In this study, two Portugueses PDO bovine breeds ( ...

An integrated non-isolated DC–DC converter for applications that demand wide conversion range is proposed in this work. Using a technique known as graft scheme, it is possible to design a single-switch SEPIC-buck converter, where both the input current and the current supplied to the output stage composed of the filter capacitor and the load are non-pulsating when operation occurs in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Therefore, minimised electromagnetic interference (EMI) levels result as a consequence. ...

Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Rodents appear to be the most important reservoirs of infection. They contaminate the environment and food and can transmit the pathogen when they are consumed by carnivores. Capybara ( Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris ) are efficient reservoirs of Leptospira, and because they are in close contact with farm animals and are found in semiurban areas, they represent a risk to public health. We isolated five Leptospira strains from ...

Six Trichoderma isolates (TF1, TF2, TF3, TF4, TF13 and TF29) were exposed to five concentrations for each metal (cadmium, copper, mercury and zinc). TF1 and TF13 showed no growth impairment under cadmium. Exposed to copper, TF3 was the most tolerant; this isolate, together with TF13, showed the highest growth in mercury medium.
