Abstract Ground subsidence of detrital deposits in the Almería basin (SE Spain) was studied using the remote sensing technique of Differential Interferometry SAR (DInSAR). This basin is one of the most arid in Europe, receiving an average rainfall of 250 mm per year. Over the last 60 years the region has experienced an enormous agricultural and urban expansion, whose water demand has been largely supplied from groundwater, leading to the current situation of overexploitation of water resources. This ...

Agro- and forest-industrial wastes are abundant and low cost sources of carbohydrates and phenolic compounds, which can be converted into biofuels, biomaterials, and high added-value compounds by different pathways in small and large biorefineries. The development of technologies based on hydrothermal treatments could improve the utilization of lignocellulosic wastes through the separation of its components (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives) in sequential processes. The adopted technologies ...

The human embryonic-lethal abnormal vision (ELAV)-like protein, HuR, has been recently found to be involved in the regulation of protein synthesis. In this study we show that HuR participates in the translational control of the HIV-1 and HCV IRES elements. HuR functions as a repressor of HIV-1 IRES activity and acts as an activator of the HCV IRES. The effect of HuR was evaluated in three independent experimental systems, rabbit reticulocyte lysate, HeLa cells, and Xenopus laevis oocytes, using both ...

In this paper we present the relevance ranking algorithm named PolarityRank. This algorithm is inspired in PageRank, the webpage relevance calculus method used by Google, and generalizes it to deal with graphs having not only positive but also negative weighted arcs. Besides the definition of our algorithm, this paper includes the algebraic justification, the convergence demonstration and an empirical study in which PolarityRank is applied to two unrelated tasks where a graph with positive and negative ...

Organosolv lignins can replace petroleum chemicals such as phenol either partially or totally in various applications. Eight lignins, seven of which corresponded to the ethanol-water fractionation of bagasse and the other to a reference lignin (Alcell®) were analyzed with the aim to evaluate their chemical and physicochemical characteristics. The purity of the lignin fractions was determined by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by ash content. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) ...

This study provides geochemical data with the aim of assisting in the proper managing of groundwater resources and so avoiding negative impacts on the aquifers. The area covers the coastal aquifer of Cabo de Gata, which supplies a new desalination plant. Groundwater samples, to different depths, were characterized to identify the main processes occurring in the system, as well as to establish their relationship with seawater. Major and minor elements, and their ionic ratios distinguish two groups ...

In contrast with HIV-1, information about drug resistance in HIV-2 is scarce and mainly derived from small series of patients failing antiretroviral therapy. The spectrum of changes in the reverse transcriptase (RT), protease (PR) and integrase (INT) genes was examined in HIV-2 individuals enrolled in the HIV-2 Spanish register. From a total of 236 HIV-2-infected individuals registered in Spain from 1989 to June 2010, 53 PR, 44 RT and 8 INT sequences were obtained. Low plasma viraemia precluded collection ...

Trust and Reputation Systems constitute an essential part of many social networks due to the great expansion of these on-line communities in the past few years. As a consequence of this growth, some users try to disturb the normal atmosphere of these communities, or even to take advantage of them in order to obtain some kind of benefits. Therefore, the concept of trust is a key point in the performance of on-line systems such as on-line marketplaces, review aggregators, social news sites, and forums. ...

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are eating disorders (ED) with complex genetic and environmental components. Genetic studies and animal models support the participation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the vulnerability to AN and BN. We have screened the entire NTRK2 gene in 91 patients with ED and have identified 14 single- ...

Nanofibrillated cellulose has been obtained from the cellulosic fraction of eucalyptus sawdust. The fractionation process involved the partial removal of hemicelluloses and lignin. CNF was obtained using TEMPO oxidation with NaOCl in basic medium followed by mechanical homogenization. The addition of 3, 6 and 9 wt.% of CNF increased lineally the tensile index of handsheets to about 55 N m g−1 ...

Transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS) is a common complication after transplantation and an important cause of graft dysfunction. Many factors have been implicated as possible causes of TRAS, such as damage from trauma and atherosclerosis. We reviewed all 286 patients transplanted in our unit from January 1990 to July 1997 to study the prevalence, clinical features, and diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Thirteen patients with TRAS were identified, and their mean age was 40 +/- 15 years. The detected ...

We have investigated the causes of the high salinity anomaly, which at certain points exceeds that of present-day seawater (600 mmol/L). Two hypotheses are considered as possible sources for the saline water: (1) The deeper, more saline groundwater date back to an old marine intrusion that occurred at the end of the last Ice Age (14–17 ...

However, provided that appropriate and sustainable pulping and fractionation processes are applied, bagasse can be utilized as a main source of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Introduction: Microalgae are photosynthetic cells that can produce third-generation biofuels and other commercial compounds. Microalgal growth is influenced by two main parameters: light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration, which represent the energy and carbon source, respectively. For photosynthesis, the optimum values of abiotic factors vary among species. Methods: In this study, the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana was isolated from a freshwater lake.
