The frequency of antibodies to Neospora caninum (Protozoa: Apicomplexa) in dog sera was investigated. Blood samples from 100 mongrel dogs, captured in the streets of Sao Luis, State of Maranhao, were analized using imunofluorescent antibody test. Forty five percent of the dogs were positive, and the titers ranged from 1:50 to 1:800. No sex difference was observed for frequency of N. caninum (60% in males and 40% in females). This is the first report of antibodies to N. caninum in dogs from Maranhao.

Sera from 384 dairy goats in nine herds from Bahia State, Brazil, were assayed for Neospora caninum antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Animals were selected and divided in groups by age and breed. Antibodies against N. caninum were found in 15% (58/384) of goats. Serum titers ranged from 1:100 to 1:3200. There was no significant difference between the age groups. Seroprevalence was higher in Alpine breed (24%) than in Saanen (14%) and Nubian (3%) breeds. The 58 N. caninum- ...

A mortality episode of endemic and endangered psittacine birds from the genera Ara and Amazona occurred during January 2015. The birds were housed in a management unit for wildlife conservation that receives wild-caught birds from illegal trade. In total, 11 (57%) adult birds of different origins that shared these accommodations died. Only four of them were sent for diagnosis. The main lesions found at necropsy were consistent with those described previously for avian chlamydiosis; the presence of ...

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite that causes disease in domestic and wild animals. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the frequency of antibodies anti-N. caninum in water buffaloes in Bahia state, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 117 animals distributed in four farms. The sera were tested using an immunofluorescent antibody technique. Antibodies were detected in 35.9% of the animals using a serum dilution of 1:200 as a cutoff. The titers ranged from 1:200 to 1:800. ...

We report the case of a one-year-old Nelore female with history of chronic cutaneous disseminated lesions that appeared immediately after a rainfall period. Serous to purulent exudates, hair with tufted appearance, hyperkeratotic, non-pruritic, hardened, yellowish to brown, and coalescent crusty lesions were observed distributed ...

Purification of a lectin from Bothrops jararacussu venom (BjcuL) was carried out using agarose-D-galactose affinity gel. MALDI-TOF gave a major signal at m/z 32028, suggesting the presence of a dimmer composed of two identical subunits. Divalent cations were required for the lectin activity, as complete absence of such ions reduced hemagglutination. BjcuL was more effective at neutral pH and showed total loss of activity at pH values below 4.0 and above 9.0. Its agglutinating activity remained stable ...

GABA (γ-amino butyric acid) is the major inhibitory transmitter in the central nervous system and its action is terminated by specific transporters (GAT), found in neurons and glial cells. We have previously described that GAT-3 is responsible for GABA uptake activity in cultured avian Müller cells and that it operates in a Na(+) and Cl(-) dependent manner. Here we show that glutamate decreases [(3)H] GABA uptake in purified cultured glial cells up to 50%, without causing cell death. This effect is ...

Abstract Soil organic carbon (SOC) information is fundamental for improving global carbon cycle modeling efforts, but discrepancies exist from country‐to‐global scales. We predicted the spatial distribution of SOC stocks (topsoil; 0–30 cm) and quantified modeling uncertainty across Mexico and the conterminous United States (CONUS). We used a multisource SOC dataset (>10 000 pedons, between 1991 and 2010) coupled with a simulated annealing regression framework that accounts for variable selection. Our ...

Metal-halide perovskites compounds, such as CsSnX3 (X = halogen), have attracted a lot of attention as a photovoltaic material due to their astonishing optoelectronic properties, nevertheless, the improvement of its efficiency is still an issue. It has been observed that the mixing of halogens in the perovskite structure increases the compound stability. However, theoretical studies of the effects of this mixing are scarce; by understanding the most stable mixing positions it would be possible to enhance ...

Abstract A major barrier to advancing ornithology is the systemic exclusion of professionals from the Global South. A recent special feature, Advances in Neotropical Ornithology, and a shortfalls analysis therein, unintentionally followed a long-standing pattern of highlighting individuals, knowledge, and views from the Global North, while largely omitting the perspectives of people based within the Neotropics. Here, we review current strengths and opportunities in the practice of Neotropical ornithology. ...
