The purpose of this study was to generate novel chitosan hydrogels (CHs) loaded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and ampicillin (AMP) to prevent early formation of biofilms. AgNPs and CHs were characterized by UV-Vis, DLS, TEM, rheology, FT-IR, Raman, and SEM. The antibiofilm effect of the formulations was investigated against four multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant pathogens using a colony biofilm, a high cell density and gradients model. Also, their hemostatic properties and cytotoxic ...

Infections arising from bacterial adhesion and colonization on chronic wounds are a significant healthcare problem. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) impregnated in dressing have attracted a great deal of attention as a potential solution. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the anti-biofilm activities of AgNPs impregnated in commercial dressings against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, bacteria isolated of chronic wounds from a hospital patient. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs was tested within ...

The presence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a very important issue and the search of new alternatives is necessary. In this work, a combination of chitosan gel with silver or gold nanoparticles was prepared and characterized using thermal, rheology, bactericide, and biocompatibility analyses. ESEM images were also taken to visualize the incorporation of the nanoparticles into the gel matrix. Thermal analysis showed a better thermal stability in the chitosan‐gold nanoparticles gels compared ...

The objective of this work was to determine the bactericidal and antibiofilm activities of gold nanorods (AuNRs) using plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) against oral microorganisms. AuNRs were synthesized by the seed and growth solution method and the gold nanoclusters were characterized with a size of 33.2 nm ± 2.23 length and 7.33 nm ± 1.60 width. The efficacy of PPTT related to its temperature was done reaching 67°C. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericide concentration (MBC) ...

Microbial resistance represents a challenge for the scientific community to develop new bioactive compounds. The goal of this research was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against a clinical isolate of Streptococcus mutans, antibiofilm activity against mature S. mutans biofilms and the compatibility with human fibroblasts. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs against the planktonic clinical isolate was size and concentration dependent, with smaller AgNPs having ...

A biofilm is a very complex consortium formed by a mix of different microorganisms, which have become an important health problem, because its formation is a resistance mechanism used by bacteria against antibiotics or the immune system. In this work, we show differences between some physicochemical properties of biofilms in mono- and multi-species, formed by bacteria from clinical samples of infected chronic wounds. Of the most prevalent bacteria in wounds, two mono- and one multi-species biofilms ...

The increase in the prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become one of the main health problems worldwide, thus threatening the era of antibiotics most frequently used in the treatment of infections. The need to develop new therapeutic strategies against multidrug resistant microorganisms, such as the combination of selected antimicrobials, can be considered as a suitable alternative. The in vitro activities of two groups of conventional antimicrobial agents alone and in combination ...

Treatment of severe or chronic skin wounds is an important challenge facing medicine and a significant health care burden. Proper wound healing is often affected by bacterial infection; where biofilm formation is one of the main risks and particularly problematic because it confers protection to microorganisms against antibiotics. One avenue to prevent bacterial colonization of wounds is the use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs); which have proved to be effective against non-multidrug-resistant and ...

Abstract Biofilms are matrices synthesized by bacteria containing polysaccharides, DNA, and proteins. The development of biofilms in infectious processes can induce a chronic inflammatory response that may progress to the destruction of tissues. The treatment of biofilms is difficult because they serve as a bacterial mechanism of defense and high doses of antibiotics are necessary to treat these infections with limited positive results. It has been demonstrated that photothermal therapy using gold ...

The development of multi-species biofilms in chronic wounds is a serious health problem that primarily generates strong resistance mechanisms to antimicrobial therapy. The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent has been studied previously. However, their cytotoxic effects limit its use within the medical area. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-biofilm capacity of chitosan gel formulations loaded with AgNPs, using silver sulfadiazine (SSD) as a ...

The skin wounds cause serious burden to healthcare systems. The lack of sterility of the innate barrier function of the skin facilitates the development of microbial communities within the wound environment especially in biofilm form. Since biofilm is difficult to eradicate, new treatments have been established, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties have been studied, nevertheless, their toxic effects are known too. Different concentrations of AgNPs ...

The galactofuran region of the mycobacterial cell wall consists of alternating 5- and 6-linked β-d-galactofuranose (β-d-Galf) residues, essential for viability. UDP-galactofuranose (UDP-Galf), the donor for Galf, is synthesised from UDP-galactopyranose (UDP-Galp) by the enzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM), which is not found in humans, rendering it a therapeutic target. The incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) in industrial and biomedical applications has increased significantly in recent years, yet their hazardous and toxic effects have not been studied extensively. Here, we studied the effects of 24 nm silver NPs (AgNPs) on a panel of bacteria isolated from medical devices used in a hospital intensive care unit. This paper is a study of rural tourism demand in Galicia by means of panel data. The dependent variable used is the number of overnight stays. Empirical results suggest that the number of overnight stays in rural tourism establishments depends basically on economic determinants, such as the price of services in rural tourism establishments, the extent of transport (travel) costs and the economic cycle (tourists' income). The income variable exhibits the highest elasticity. Besides the influence of ...

The degree of capacity utilization affects the measurement of total productivity. This paper uses establishment occupancy level as a proxy for establishment capacity utilization. Accordingly, the authors decompose total factor productivity (TFP) growth into technical progress, changes in allocative efficiency, changes in occupancy levels, changes in technical efficiency and scale effects. The empirical results show that the occupancy level component offers the most important contribution to TFP. ...

When fulfilling certain conditions, this type of mobility can actually be considered a type of tourist activity. This paper justifies the choice of the term "academic tourism" to describe such a form of tourism. Further to this, its primary purpose is to identify the main determinants that drive the demand of academic tourism in Galicia. An empirical analysis has been carried out using a dynamic ...
