The association of a tumor of the cauda equina and hydrocephalus is unusual. We report a case of hydrocephalus with normal pressure associated with an equally rare affliction, a cavernous angioma of the cauda equina, which regressed after surgical ablation. The physiological mechanism involved is discussed.

SUMMARY: Lipoid proteinosis is a rare genodermatosis characterized by multisystem involvement due to intracellular deposition of an amorphous hyaline material. Lipoid proteinosis is caused by mutations in the ECM1 gene. In many patients, skin and mucosa abnormalities are the first manifestation. When the CNS is affected, a wide variety of neurologic abnormalities may be present. The hallmark findings are calcifications, mostly occurring in the amygdalae, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, or even the striatum. ...

The aim of this study was to assess relationships between panoramic indexes, bone mineral density (BMD), and osteoporotic fractures in men >60 years old.Body height and weight, body mass index, lumbar spine and hip BMD, and the presence of osteoporotic fractures were determined in the 127 studied men. Dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) were used for measuring mandibular cortical indexes.BMDs were lower in patients with thinning and resorption of mandibular cortex. No association was found between ...

Automated metering is expected to be an integral part of the modern energy grid. Automated metering entails transport of metering data from the energy consumer's premises to the data management systems of the energy provider and potentially information in the other direction. This paper describes a practical mesh networking solution based on extensions proposed to the routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL) to realize automated metering communications. This solution comprises self- ...

The aim of the study was to verify the concordance of contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) and MRI evaluation among four radiologists in detecting metastatic cervical lymph nodes of oral cancer patients.Ten patients underwent clinical and imaging examinations (CECT and MRI). Four radiologists, two oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMRs) and two medical radiologists (MRs), independently analysed the images twice. Cohen's kappa index and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to verify the concordance between ...

Ammonia (NH3) is regarded as one of the most viable alternatives to produce carbon-free energy. However, its low flammability and high NOx emissions associated with its combustion inhibit the implementation of pure NH3 as a fuel. Dual-fuel approaches with NH3 and more reactive fuels have been proposed; however, information on pollutant emissions is still scarce. The present work focuses on quantifying the gaseous pollutant emissions from the combustion of mixtures of NH3 and CH4 as a function of ...

Ammonia (NH3) is currently in the spotlight because of its potential in serving as an energy resource devoid of carbon. Combustion of NH3, however, presents several drawbacks, such as high ignition temperature, low flame speed, and high NOx emissions. Furthermore, although dual-fuel approaches may provide a solution for some of these problems, scarcity of information on the resulting emissions inhibits a large-scale adoption. Therefore, the present work is focused on studying gaseous pollutants, ...

Ammonia (NH3) is considered as a promising carbon free energy carrier for energy and transportation systems. However, its low flammability and high NOx emission potential inhibit the implementation of pure NH3 in these systems. On the other hand, methane is a favorable low emission fuel that can be used as a co-firing fuel in ammonia combustion to promote the reactivity and control the emission levels. However, knowledge of the ignition properties of NH3/CH4 mixtures at intermediate temperatures ...

Abstract Forecasting volatility of certain stocks plays an important role for investors as it allows to quantify associated trading risk and thus make right decisions. This work explores econometric alternatives for time series forecasting, such as the ARIMA and GARCH models, which have been widely used in the financial industry. These techniques have the advantage that training the models does not require high computational cost. To improve predictions obtained from ARIMA, the discrete Fourier ...

Abstract This study aims to evaluate forecasting properties of classic methodologies (ARCH and GARCH models) in comparison with deep learning methodologies (MLP, RNN, and LSTM architectures) for predicting Bitcoin's volatility. As a new asset class with unique characteristics, Bitcoin's high volatility and structural breaks make forecasting challenging. Based on 2753 observations from 08-09-2014 to 01-05-2022, this study focuses on Bitcoin logarithmic returns. Results show that deep learning methodologies ...

Water supply systems (WSS) frequently present high-energy consumption values, which correspond to the major expenses of these systems. Energy costs are a function of its real consumption and of the variability of the daily energy tariff. This paper presents a model of optimization for the energy efficiency in a water supply system. The system is equipped with a pump station and presents excess of available energy in the gravity branch. First, a water turbine is introduced in the system in order to ...
