Abstract Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) are exploited to concentrate light, provide local heating and enhance drug release when coupled to smart polymers. However, the role of NP assembling in these processes is poorly investigated, although their superior performance as nanoheaters has been theoretically predicted since a decade. Here we report on a compound hydrogel (agarose and carbomer 974P) loaded with gold NPs of different configurations. We investigate the dynamics of light-heat conversion in ...

We characterized the biologic background of prothrombotic platelet function in the setting of durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) evaluating the role of different antithrombotic regimens. Platelet-mediated thrombin generation was quantified using the Platelet Activity State (PAS) Assay and the Thrombin Generation Test (TGT) in 78 patients implanted with the HeartMate II (n = 10, 13%), the HeartMate 3 (HM3) (n = 30, 38%), or the HVAD (n = 38, 49%) and managed with oral anticoagulation plus aspirin ( ...

The neurodegenerative changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are elicited by the accumulation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ), which damage neurons either directly by interacting with components of the cell surface to trigger cell death signaling or indirectly by activating astrocytes and microglia to produce inflammatory mediators. It has been recently proposed that the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) is responsible for neuronal damage by interacting with Aβ. By using neuroblastoma cell clones lacking ...

Optical communication can be revolutionized by encoding data into the orbital angular momentum of light beams. However, state-of-the-art approaches for dynamic control of complex optical wavefronts are mainly based on liquid crystal spatial light modulators or miniaturized mirrors, which suffer from intrinsically slow (µs-ms) response times. Here, we experimentally realize a hybrid meta-optical system that enables complex control of the wavefront of light with pulse-duration limited dynamics. Specifically, ...

In this work we have investigated the molecular basis of the neuronal damage induced by the prion peptide by searching for a surface receptor whose activation could be the first step of a cascade of events responsible for cell death. By using a human neuroblastoma cell line lacking all the neurotrophin receptors and derived clones expressing the full-length or truncated forms of the low affinity neurotrophin receptor (p75 NTR ), we have been able to demonstrate that the neuronal death induced by the ...

Abstract Monitoring of vibrational eigenmodes of an elastic body excited by gravitational waves was one of the first concepts proposed for the detection of gravitational waves. At laboratory scale, these experiments became known as resonant bar detectors first developed by Joseph Weber in the 1960s. Due to the dimensions of these bars, the targeted signal frequencies were in the kHz range. Weber also pointed out that monitoring of vibrations of Earth or the Moon could reveal gravitational waves ...

Plasmonic nanostructures are, to date, well-known to offer unique possibilities for the tailoring of light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. Most recently, a new route to ultrafast all-optical modulation has been disclosed by combining the resonant features of plasmonic nanostructures with the giant third-order optical nonlinearity of noble metals regulated by highly energetic (hot) carriers. In this framework, a variety of nanostructures have been designed, with special attention to shapes featuring ...

In everyday clinical practice, medical decision is currently based on clinical guidelines which are often static and rigid, and do not account for population variability, while individualized, patient-oriented decision and/or treatment are the paradigm change necessary to enter into the era of precision medicine. Most of the limitations of a guideline-based system could be overcome through the adoption of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. However, ...

In patients with left ventricular assist device support and aspirin allergy, the choice of effective antiplatelet strategy remains a challenge. We compared the antithrombotic effect of clopidogrel vs ticagrelor in an LVAD patient with aspirin allergy by using a modified protocol of the thrombin generation test, accounting selectively for the platelet contribution on thrombin generation. Our results demonstrate enhanced antithrombotic efficacy offered by ticagrelor. Consistent with experimental results, ...

Abstract Background In patients with node-positive early breast cancer (EBC), dose-dense adjuvant chemotherapy improves disease-free survival (DFS) compared with standard interval chemotherapy. The GIM2 trial supports the value of dose-dense chemotherapy and suggests that the benefit is present in patients with hormone receptor-negative or hormone receptor-positive tumours (Del Mastro et al. Lancet 2015). In order to individualize decision making, there is a need to examine the absolute treatment effects ...
