There is controversy about the clinical consequences of intermediate alleles (IAs) in Huntington disease (HD). The main objective of this study was to establish the clinical manifestations of IA carriers for a prospective, international, European HD registry. We assessed a cohort of participants at risk with <36 CAG repeats of the huntingtin (HTT) gene. Outcome measures were the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) motor, cognitive, and behavior domains, Total Functional Capacity (TFC), and ...

Abstract We describe enterococci in raw-frozen dog food commercialized in Europe as a source of genes encoding resistance to the antibiotic drug linezolid and of strains and plasmids enriched in antibiotic-resistance and virulence genes in hospitalized patients. Whole-genome sequencing was fundamental to linking isolates from dog food to human cases across Europe.

The increase in the number of pets in recent years has been followed by an exponential growth of the industrial pet food sector, which has been accompanied by new food safety risks, namely antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether dog food commercially available in Portugal is a reservoir of clinically-relevant antibiotic resistant Enterococcus. Fifty-five samples (25 brands; 22 wet, 14 raw frozen, 8 dry, 7 treats and 4 semi-wet) were collected on 9 commercial surfaces ...

Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure.

This paper examines the role and importance of the territorial dimension of EU Cohesion Policy, during its five programming phases (1989‑2020), by relating this implementation process with several territorial elements, and by assessing their constant changes, namely in three main components and related elements: (i) the 'policy strategy' designed to include an integrated territorial perspective; (ii) the 'policy impacts' in territorial development and territorial cohesion, together with the use of territorial ...

The assessment of the thermal bioclimate is based on the human energybalance and derived indices such as Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) or UniversalThermal Climate index (UTCI). These two indices were compared over a period often year based on hourly data in a middle European city with a temperate climate. Theanalysis performed shows that the differences obtained result from the different thermophysiologicalsettings of clothing insulation. For conditions with extremely high vapourpressure ...

With the aim of implementing climatic guidelines for planning purposes, the urban climate of each particular city must be assessed, particularly the frequency ofunwanted climatic features, such as the Urban Heat Island (UHI). As the Lisbon "Mesoscaleurban meteorological network" (CEG-IGOT-ULisboa) has been running since 2004, it isnow possible to present statistical results about the UHI. It was calculated on an hourly basisas the difference between one of the "central" measurement points (Restauradores ...

Simultaneous trends for ethnicization and gentrification are contributing to the fragmentation of contemporary urban spaces. This is characterised by the emergence of new social and urban units that break the homogeneity of the modern city and lead to the development of new networks, territorially discontinuous, less neighbourhood centred and with a limited intersection. With Mouraria (Lisbon, Portugal) and San Francisco (Bilbao, Spain), two traditional and multiethnic neighbourhoods, as case-studies ...

Following the rise of climate and environmental challenges during the last decade or so, the growing awareness among various actors of sustainability issues at the local and global levels has resulted in a change in public policies as in industrial and financial strategic moves. This change has been rapidly translated into substantial investments both in public and private environmental sectors. Indeed, many “green” technologies and innovations are now reaching the market and more radical ones are ...

MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES – HOW TO DEFINE THEM. The concept of medium-sized city was first referred to in France at the end of the 1960s when the 6th Economic and Social Development Policy was under preparation (1971-76). Nonetheless, many of the principles and criteria associated with it had already been borne in the mind of the experts in this field and politicians as well as in the their resources and potential, emerged as an alternative to large cities then undergoing a crisis and reinforced their place ...

LANDSCAPE AND GEOGRAPHY – The word landscape was first applied to renaissance paintings, but the concept really emerged during the scientific revolution that replaced the theological explanation of the world and was part of the events that led to the making of the modern world. It was then seen as a piece of land on the surface of the earth surface as well ...

This paper offers a gender approach to the impact of male migrationfrom Morocco to Europe on women left behind. The pertinence of the topic stems from the fact that very few studies have been conducted on the subject. It is believed that such studies will help in the understanding of the the phenomenon of migration and help to find solutions for some of the problems it poses. More and more Moroccan women suffer as a result of the migration of their husbands, sons, fathers, etc. Their suffering is ...
