Abstract We present the preliminary design of a high capacity LowWind turbine rotor with a specific power of 100 W/ m 2 , a rated power of 3.4MW and a 208m diameter rotor. The turbine is designed for optimal system integration and thus with a considerably increased power production at low to medium wind speed and stopped at 13 m/s. The AEP of the turbine, due to the large swept rotor area, is 40-45% higher than the AEP of a conventional on-shore turbine, the IEA Task 37 reference wind turbine with ...

This paper represents an expert view from Europe of future emerging technologies within the wind energy sector considering their potential, challenges, applications and technology readiness and how they might evolve in the coming years. These technologies were identified as originating primarily from the academic sector, some start-up companies and a few larger industrial entities. The following areas were considered: airborne wind energy, offshore floating concepts, smart rotors, wind-induced energy ...

ABSTRACT There seems to be a significant uncertainty in aerodynamic and aeroelastic simulations on megawatt turbines operating in inflow with considerable shear, in particular with the engineering blade element momentum (BEM) model, commonly implemented in the aeroelastic design codes used by industry. Computations with advanced vortex and computational fluid dynamics models are used to provide improved insight into the complex flow phenomena and rotor aerodynamics caused by the sheared inflow. One ...

Abstract Wind turbine resonant vibrations are investigated based on aeroelastic simulations both in frequency and time domain. The investigation focuses on three different aspects: the need of a precise modeling when a wind turbine is operating close to resonant conditions; the importance of estimating wind turbine loads also at low turbulence intensity wind conditions to identify the presence of resonances; and the wind turbine response because of external excitations. In the first analysis, three ...

Abstract The aim of this work is to improve aeroelastic simulation codes by accounting for the unsteady aerodynamic forces that a blade experiences in static stall. A model based on a spectral representation of the aerodynamic lift force is defined. The drag and pitching moment are derived using a conditional simulation technique for stochastic processes. The input data for the model can be collected either from measurements or from numerical results from a Computational Fluid Dynamics code for ...

The objective of this paper is an improved understanding of the physics of the aeroelastic motion of wind turbine blades in order to improve the numerical models used for their design. Two- and three-dimensional Navier–Stokes calculations of the flow around a wind turbine airfoil using the k−ω SST and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence models, as well as an engineering semiempirical dynamic stall model, are conducted. The computational results are compared to the experimental results that ...

Abstract A near wake model for trailing vorticity originally proposed by Beddoes for high‐resolution helicopter blade vortex interaction computations has been implemented and compared with the usual blade element momentum models used for wind turbine calculations. The model is in principle a lifting line model for the rotating blade, where only a quarter revolution of the wake system behind the blade is taken into account. This simplification of the wake enables a fast computation of the downwash ...

Abstract Aeroelasticity is a key issue in the continuing development of wind turbines towards large, flexible, highly optimized machines. The steadily increasing technology level is reflected not necessarily by the complexity of the turbines, but by the level of knowledge and advanced principles that are taken into account during the design process and incorporated in the final optimized design. This article examines some of the main uncertainties within aeroelastic modelling of wind turbines that ...

Riso̸ has developed a dynamic stall model that is used to analyze and reproduce open air blade section measurements as well as wind tunnel measurements. The dynamic stall model takes variations in both angle of attack and flow velocity into account. The paper gives a brief description of the dynamic stall model and presents results from analyses of dynamic stall measurements for a variety of experiments with different airfoils in wind tunnel and on operating rotors. The wind tunnel experiments comprises ...

The double-stall phenomenon of aerofoil flows is characterized by at least two distinct stall levels for identical inflow conditions. In the present work a likely explanation of double stall is presented. Observations on full-scale rotors, in wind tunnel experiments and in CFD calculations could show at least two different distinct lift levels for identical inflow conditions, with sudden shifts between them. CFD calculations revealed the generation of a small, laminar separation bubble at the leading ...

Wind turbine blades are subject to complex flow conditions. For operation in yaw and turbulent inflow, the blade sections appear to execute a motion more complex than a harmonic blade oscillation, which causes dynamic stall. Predictions of dynamic stall caused by simple harmonic oscillation are crucial to efforts in understanding and improving wind turbine performance. Investigation of dynamic stall development caused by a combined oscillatory and translatory motion contributes to better understand ...

BACKGROUND The risk of ischemic stroke/thromboembolic events after an intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who are on warfarin treatment is poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the risk of ischemic stroke/thromboembolic events and ICH. METHODS Linkage of three Danish nationwide administrative registries in the period between 1999 and 2012 identified patients with AF on warfarin treatment. Objectives Work migration into Denmark has increased during the recent decades, especially after the enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004. Whether or not migrant workers experience more work injuries than the native workforce has been debated and results are conflicting, most likely due to methodological difficulties and cultural disparities. We set out to meet these challenges using population-based work injury registers, targeting a specific and representative region in Denmark. Methods This population- ...

The arrhythmogenic effects of flecainide in atrial fibrillation and flutter were assessed in a consecutive material of 100 patients without severe heart failure (NYHA class I or II). Severe arrhythmogenic events occurred in 9% (4-16%) of the patients: within the first 5 days of treatment in seven patients, and in two patients after 60 and 240 days of flecainide treatment. Patients with proarrhythmic events tended to be older and to have a longer QRS duration. Following flecainide therapy conversion ...

Fabry disease is an X- linked inherited lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the GLA gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (α-Gal A). The possible pathological significance of the D313Y variant in the GLA gene has not been verified and it may be a Fabry variant. Our aim was to elucidate whether the presence of the D313Y variant influenced the α-Gal A activity or resulted in Fabry symptoms or Fabry organ involvement. In two Danish families the presence of the D313Y variant ...

ABSTRACT— Thirty consecutive alcoholic patients with biopsy‐proven cirrhosis of the liver and oesophageal varices underwent a total of 47 upper intestinal endoscopies. During 31 of the endoscopies paravariceal sclerotherapy of oesophageal varices was performed. Blood cultures were drawn before and after the procedures. Bacteriaemia after endoscopy was detected on seven occasions: six after sclerotherapy and one after endoscopy without sclerotherapy. This difference did not reach statistical significance. ...

Brain aging is accompanied by declining mitochondrial respiration. We hypothesized that mitochondrial morphology and dynamics would reflect this decline. Using hippocampus and frontal cortex of a segmental progeroid mouse model lacking Cockayne syndrome protein B (CSBm/m) and C57Bl/6 (WT) controls and comparing young (2-5 months) to middle-aged mice (13-14 months), we found that complex I-linked state 3 respiration (CI) was reduced at middle age in CSBm/m hippocampus, but not in CSBm/m cortex or WT brain. ...
