Scientific data on the clinical impact of moderate alcohol consumption after a recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are limited, and the specific effect of wine ethanol has not been studied. In survivors of a recent AMI, we analyzed the association between ethanol intake and the risk of recurrence. The patients were classified according to the amount of ethanol that they consumed regularly during follow-up. Major prognostic factors, including the severity of the prior AMI and drug treatment, were ...

Dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) reduce coronary heart disease (CHD) complications, such as chronic arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Improved myocardial resistance to ischemia-reperfusion injury results in smaller myocardial infarction, which is a major factor in the occurrence of CHD complications. We hypothesized that a specific dietary fatty acid profile (low in saturated and n-6 PUFA but high in plant and marine n-3 PUFA) may improve myocardial resistance to ischemia-reperfusion ...

In this paper, we propose an approach for surveillance video indexing and retrieval. The objective of this approach is to answer five main challenges we have met in this domain: (1) the lack of means for finding data from the indexed databases, (2) the lack of approaches working at different abstraction levels, (3) imprecise indexing, (4) incomplete indexing, (5) the lack of user-centered search. We propose a new data model containing two main types of extracted video contents: physical objects and events. ...

Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) W. W. Hay et H. Mohler is a cosmopolitan coccolithophore species that forms massive blooms in low phosphorus seawater, partly due to its ability to utilize organic phosphate via extracellular alkaline phosphatase (AP). A novel AP gene, ehap1, was identified from the strain CCMP374. In this study, we examined the expression of ehap1 in various E. huxleyi strains and its genetic diversity in those strains and field populations. Two EHAP1 proteins (EHAP1a, 75 kDa and EHAP1b, ...

In this paper, we propose a novel query language for video indexing and retrieval that (1) enables to make queries both at the image level and at the semantic level (2) enables the users to define their own scenarios based on semantic events and (3) retrieves videos with both exact matching and similarity matching. For a query language, four main issues must be addressed: data modeling, query formulation, query parsing and query matching. In this paper we focus and give contributions on data modeling, ...

Abstract. Ensemble forecasts can greatly benefit water resources management as they provide useful information regarding the uncertainty of the situation at hand. However, weather forecasting systems are evolving and the cost for reanalysis and reforecasts is prohibitive. Consequently, series of ensemble weather forecasts from a particular version of the forecasting system are often short. In this case study, we consider a hydrological event that took place in 2003 on the Gatineau watershed in Canada ...

This work relates the theoretical study of the dynamic behavior of a dual free-piston Stirling engine (DFPSE) coupled with an asynchronous linear alternator. This machine integrates one piston and two displacers placed in a symmetrical way compared to the piston to improve the stability of the machine. The paper presents an analytical study of the dynamic balance equations of a DFPSE. This model takes into account the non-linear dissipative effects of the fluid and the electromagnetic forces. The relative uncertainty of anthropogenic climate forcing has decreased in the past decade. A statistical model suggests that by 2030 this uncertainty will be halved, as CO2 increasingly dominates over other human-made climate influences. Carbon dioxide has exerted the largest portion of radiative forcing and surface temperature change over the industrial era, but other anthropogenic influences have also contributed1,2. However, large uncertainties in total forcing make it difficult to derive climate ...

Background Orbitofrontal epilepsy (OFE) is less known and is poorly characterized in comparison with temporal lobe epilepsy, partly because it is rare and possibly because it is unrecognized and therefore underestimated. Most studies on spinal manipulation learning demonstrate the relevance of including motor learning strategies in chiropractic curricula. Two outcomes of practice are the production of movement in an efficient manner and the improved capability of learners to evaluate their own motor performance. The goals of this study were to evaluate if expertise is associated with increased spinal manipulation proficiency and if error detection skills of force application during a high-velocity low-amplitude ...

The coagulation enhancement factor due to electrostatic (Coulomb and polarization-induced) interaction between silicon nanoparticles was numerically computed for different nanoparticle sizes and charges in typical low-temperature argon-silane plasma conditions. We used a rigorous formulation, based on a multipole moment coefficients, to describe the complete electrostatic interaction between dielectric particles. The resulting interaction potential is non-singular at the contact point, which allows ...

Powering future generations of implanted medical devices will require cumbersome transcutaneous energy transfer or harvesting energy from the human body. No functional solution that harvests power from the body is currently available, despite attempts to use the Seebeck thermoelectric effect, vibrations or body movements. Glucose fuel cells appear more promising, since they produce electrical energy from glucose and dioxygen, two substrates present in physiological fluids. The most powerful ones, ...
