Background Drugs approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) improve long-term outcomes. These drugs have pulmonary vasodilator properties which may potentially cause a decrease in arterial oxyhaemoglobin saturation ( S aO 2 ) in some patients. The present retrospective study of the French Pulmonary Hypertension Registry aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients showing a ≥3% decrease in S aO 2 while treated with PAH drugs. Methods We reviewed 719 ...

To determine whether diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can help to distinguish early stage autoimmune (AI) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitides. This case-control study included patients from a multi-center cohort of AI encephalitides whose initial MRI including DWI was performed within ten days after symptoms onset. They were compared with patients with HSV encephalitis enrolled prospectively in a single-center from June, 2020 to December, 2020. The final diagnosis of AI encephalitis required ...

Nathalie Picard, François‐Charles Wolff,

In this paper, we investigate whether educational inequalities stem from differences between families or within families. In a poor economy, schooling is costly for parents, and education is likely to be unequally distributed among siblings. Drawing on discrete ordered choice models, we present a simple method to estimate the between and within components of both the explained and unexplained variance in education. For our empirical analysis, we use the Living Standard Measurement Study survey conducted ...

We undertook a large-scale epidemiological survey of commensal Escherichia coli in Trois-Sauts, an isolated village located in the south of French Guiana where human population exchanges are restricted and source of antibiotics controlled. Stools from 162 Wayampi Amerindians and rectal swabs from 33 human associated and 198 wild animals were collected in the close proximity of the village. The prevalence of E. coli was decreasing from humans (100%) to human associated (64%) and wild (45%) animals. ...

Abstract This study introduces a novel DNA sampling method in amphibians using skin swabs. We assessed the relevancy of skin swabs relevancy for genetic studies by amplifying a set of 17 microsatellite markers in the alpine newt Ichthyosaura alpestris , including 14 new polymorphic loci, and a set of 11 microsatellite markers in Hyla arborea , from DNA collected with buccal swabs (the standard swab method), dorsal skin swabs and ventral skin swabs. We tested for quality and quantity of collected DNA ...

Bromocriptin (BCT) is a dopaminergic receptor agonist, poorly transported through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and responsible for central side effects. Interactions between BCT and the efflux protein, P-glycoprotein (Pgp), have been described in vitro but nothing is known in vivo nor at the BBB level. At the BBB, in vivo, we investigated BCT as (i) a Pgp substrate by comparing the brain uptake in CF1 mdr1a(-/-) and mdr1a(+/+) mice with or without inhibitors of Pgp (valspodar, elacridar); (ii) a Pgp ...

The restoration of a normal mechanical axis of the lower limb following total knee prosthesis (TKP) depends on the accuracy of the intra-operative measurement of the femoro-tibial angle. We have studied the reproducibility of intra-operative measurement of the coronal mechanical femoro-tibial axis with the OrthoPilot (Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany) non-image-based navigation system.A consecutive series of 20 TKP (Aesculap SEARCH Evolution prosthesis) implanted by the same surgical team of two senior ...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the specific contribution of individual UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) isoforms in the metabolism of buprenorphine (BUP) and norbuprenorphine (Nor-BUP), as well as the impact of their genetic variations. The glucuronidation of BUP and Nor-BUP was examined using human liver microsomes (HLMs) and heterologously expressed UGTs. The individual contribution of UGT isoforms was estimated using enzyme kinetic experiments combined with the relative activity factor (RAF). ...

By using a panel of 603 commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli and Shigella isolates, we showed that mutation rates of strains vary considerably among different ecotypes. Uropathogenic strains had the highest frequency of mutators, while strains from patients with bacteremia had the lowest mutation rates. No correlation between the mutation rates and antibiotic resistance was observed among the studied strains.

The new WHO classification abolishes the frontier between RAEB-t with 20% of blasts and leukemia with 30% of blasts. We review the definitions of erythroleukemia and discuss the relationship between FAB AML6, RAEB-t and AML6 variant. We ask whether secondary erythroleukemias are the same entity as RAEB-t on survival, karyotype and cytologic characteristics. We suggest that 'AML6 variant' with pure erythroid lineage proliferation would be the real de novo erythroleukemia. Current FAB AML6 entity will ...

A detailed record of sea surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere based on migration of marine invertebrate fauna (ammonites) and isotopic thermometry (δ18O values of shark tooth enamel) indicates a severe cooling at the Middle–Late Jurassic transition (MLJT), about 160 Ma ago. The magnitude of refrigeration (1–3°C for lower middle latitudes) and its coincidence in time with an abrupt global-scale fall of sea level documented through sequence stratigraphy are both suggestive of continental ice ...

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains cause disease by invading normally sterile niches within the host body, e.g., urinary tract, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Infections due to ExPEC strains, in particular urinary tract infections, cause considerable morbidity and significant health-care costs. The goal of our study is to evaluate whether Caenorhabditis elegans can be used as a model to study phenotypic and genetic virulence determinants of ExPEC strains. For this purpose, ...

Effective conservation of marine fish stocks involves understanding the impact, on population dynamics, of intra-specific variation in nursery habitats use at the juvenile stage. In some regions, an important part of the catching effort is concentrated on a small number of marine species that colonize coastal lagoons during their first year of life. To determine the intra-specific variation in lagoon use by these fish and their potential demographic consequences, we studied diet spatiotemporal variations ...

Abstract Genetic data are increasingly used in landscape ecology for the indirect assessment of functional connectivity, that is, the permeability of landscape to movements of organisms. Among available tools, matrix correlation analyses (e.g. Mantel tests or mixed models) are commonly used to test for the relationship between pairwise genetic distances and movement costs incurred by dispersing individuals. When organisms are spatially clustered, a population‐based sampling scheme ( PSS ) is usually ...
