Alterations of methionine cycle in steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma induce MAT1A decrease and MAT2A increase expressions with the consequent decrease of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM). This causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). SAM administration antagonizes pathological conditions, including galactosamine, acetaminophen, and ethanol intoxications, characterized by decreased intracellular SAM. Positive therapeutic effects of SAM/vitamin E or SAM/ursodeoxycholic acid ...

The deregulation of the oxidative metabolism in cancer, as shown by the increased aerobic glycolysis and impaired oxidative phosphorylation (Warburg effect), is coordinated by genetic changes leading to the activation of oncogenes and the loss of oncosuppressor genes. The understanding of the metabolic deregulation of cancer cells is necessary to prevent and cure cancer. In this review, we illustrate and comment the principal metabolic and molecular variations of cancer cells, involved in their anomalous ...

Epiaortic ultrasonography (EAU) is a valid imaging method to detect atherosclerotic changes of the ascending aorta and to guide surgical strategies for the prevention of cerebral embolism in patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, its use is not widespread. The impact of EAU on the outcome after isolated CABG was investigated in patients from the European Multicenter Study on Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (E-CABG) registry. The plant extracts and fractions show no mutagenic effect in different strains of Salmonella typhimurium with and without metabolic activation. However, the plant extracts and fractions show a protective antimutagenic effect in vitro against photomutagenesis induced by 8-methoxy-psoralen (8-MOP) plus UVA in S. typhimurium TA 102. The essential oil of aerial parts of Ruta graveolens was obtained by hydrodistillation with a 0.74% yield on a dry weight basis. Thirty-eight components were identified by GC and GC-MS analyses. 2-Ketones predominated in the essential oil, with undecan-2-one (46.8%) and nonan-2-one (18.8%) as the main constituents. The essential oil and some of its constituents were tested for their allelopathic activity in vitro on radish germination and radicle growth in light and darkness. The essential oil and ...

Abstract The epidemiology and the outcomes of acute appendicitis in elderly patients are very different from the younger population. Elderly patients with acute appendicitis showed higher mortality, higher perforation rate, lower diagnostic accuracy, longer delay from symptoms onset and admission, higher postoperative complication rate and higher risk of colonic and appendiceal cancer. The aim of the present work was to investigate age-related factors that could influence a different approach, compared ...

Abstracts Specific microRNAs (miRs), including the “angio‐miR‐126” and the “inflamma‐miR‐146a‐5p,” have been proposed as biomarkers and even therapeutic targets of obesity‐associated metabolic diseases. Physical activity, a key measure of prevention for obesity and its complications, is reported to influence the expression of these miRs. In this study, we investigate whether a physical activity program proven to improve metabolic parameters in obese patients can correct the circulating levels of these ...

Bidirectional brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) establish a two-way direct communication link 4 between the brain and the external world. A decoder translates recorded neural activity into motor 5 commands and an encoder delivers sensory information collected from the environment directly 6 to the brain creating a closed-loop system. These two modules are typically integrated in bulky 7 external devices. However, the clinical support of patients with severe motor and sensory deficits 8 requires compact, ...

FRP reinforcement is well known as a possible alternative to steel bars in order to improve durability of reinforced concrete members. However, the intrinsic brittleness of concrete and FRP materials may induce problems at the ultimate conditions due to premature failure modes; the performance under service loads is a critical issue as well. Flavonoids are the most abundant natural polyphenols widely distributed in plants. Among them, chrysin has recently attracted the attention for its anti-tumor and anti-oxidant activities and also for its protective effects on allergic inflammation. Therefore, in this study, we set out to investigate and characterize the effects of chrysin in classical models of inflammation reasoning that this would expand our knowledge on the pharmacological properties of this flavone. To this aim we have firstly ...

We present results on the effect of the stiffness of the equation of state on the dynamical bar-mode instability in rapidly rotating polytropic models of neutron stars in full General Relativity. We determine the change in the threshold for the emergence of the instability for a range of the adiabatic $\Gamma$ index from 2.0 to 3.0, including two values chosen to mimic more realistic equations of state at high densities.

Historical masonry constructions often need to be strengthened and upgraded to satisfy current seismic code requirements. Recently many interventions have been done bonding composite materials to the surface of existing masonry elements. The effectiveness of these interventions strongly depends on the bond between the strengthening material and the masonry and on the mechanical properties of the masonry substrate. In this paper the bond between fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) materials ...

In this paper an analytical model to evaluate the structural behavior of masonry arches and vaults strengthened with composite unbonded tendons placed at the extrados is presented. The tendons are fixed at the imposts. The model is formulated under the assumption of finite displacements. The displaced equilibrium configurations are identified by the stationarity of the potential of the acting forces. It is shown that when the tendon is not pretensioned an increase of the arch collapse load can be ...

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) belongs to the ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK). These trans-membrane proteins are activated following binding with peptide growth factors of the EGF-family of proteins. Evidence suggests that the EGFR is involved in the pathogenesis and progression of different carcinoma types. The EGFR and EGF-like peptides are often over-expressed in human carcinomas, and in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that these proteins are able to induce cell ...
