Abstract Background and Aims An electrical storm (ES) is a clinical emergency with a paucity of established treatment options. Despite initial encouraging reports about the safety and effectiveness of percutaneous stellate ganglion block (PSGB), many questions remained unsettled and evidence from a prospective multicentre study was still lacking. For these purposes, the STAR study was designed. Methods This is a multicentre observational study enrolling patients suffering from an ES refractory to ...

Structural changes ensuing from the non-covalent absorption of bovine beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) on the surface of polystyrene nanoparticles were investigated by using spectroscopic approaches, by assessing the reactivity of specific residues, and by limited proteolysis/mass spectrometry. Also, the immunoreactivity of absorbed and free BLG was compared. All these approaches indicated substantial rearrangements of the protein structure in the absorbed state, in spite of the reported structural rigidity ...

Abstract This paper reports a study on a real three-echelon supply chain operating in the beverage sector. The authors, starting from the actual supply chain configuration, propose a detailed study of the inventory systems. The test of a comprehensive set of different operative scenarios, in terms of customers' demand intensity, customers' demand variability and lead times, becomes a powerful tool for inventory systems analysis along the supply chain. The main objective is the comparison of the ...

Background The minimum age to start specific immunotherapy with inhalant allergens in children has not been clearly established, and position papers discourage its use in children younger than 5 years. Objective To assess the safety of high-dose sublingual-swallow immunotherapy (SLIT) in a group of children younger than 5 years. Methods Sixty-five children (51 boys and 14 girls; age range, 38-80 months; mean ± SD age, 60 ± 10 years; median age, 60 months) were included in this observational study. They ...

The amino acid sequence of the α-chain of trout hemoglobin (Hb) IV is given, thus completing the primary structure of the hemoglobin component of trout's blood characterized by the Root effect. The trout Hb IV α-chain consists of 142 amino acid residues; comparison with the corresponding sequences from human and carp hemoglobins shows differences of 50.0 and 35.9%, respectively. A difference of 39.6% is found with the α-chain of trout Hb I, the other major hemoglobin component of trout blood, devoid ...

Abstract A general single‐step approach is introduced for the green fabrication of hybrid biosensors from water dispersion. The resulting device integrates the semiconducting properties of a carbon nanotube (CNT) and the functionality of a protein. In the initial aqueous phase, the protein (viz., lysozyme [LZ]) disperses the (6,5)CNT. Drop‐casting of the dispersion on a test pattern (a silicon wafer with interdigitated Au source and drain electrodes) yields a fully operating, robust, electrolyte‐gated ...

Prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is growing alarmingly, and the number of affected people continues to escalate. Such cardiometabolic states exert many deleterious effects on the heart as they are associated with adverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling and, most notably, with a marked increase in the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) and subsequent stroke. Epidemiological studies clearly show a strong association between obesity and AF, with a 4-5% ...

Aims Blood stasis is the main cause of left atrial thrombosis (LAT) in atrial tachyarrhythmias. The high-velocity flow inside the left atrium, due to mitral valve regurgitation, may prevent clot formation but the topic has never been investigated in large-scale studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether the presence and degree of mitral regurgitation have a protective role against LAT risk. Methods A total of 1302 consecutive adult patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation ...

The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of left atrial cavity and appendage thrombosis in patients undergoing cardioversion for non-valvular atrial tachyarrhythmias. In persistent atrial tachyarrhythmias, 90% of thromboses are reported to be located inside the left atrial appendage. This prevalence refers to old studies and meta-analysis in a mixed population of valvular and non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Left atrial cavity thrombosis in non-valvular atrial fibrillation has not been ...

Pocket hematoma is a common complication of cardiac implantable electronic device procedures and a potential risk factor for device infections, especially in patients on oral anticoagulation or antiplatelet treatment. There is a wide variability in the incidence of pocket hematoma and bleeding complications in the literature and the major cause for this seems to be the variability of the used definitions for hematomas. The lack of generally accepted definition for pocket hematoma renders the comparisons ...

Allergic inflammation is initiated by the contact between allergen(s) and specific IgE antibodies, driven by regulatory cells such as antigen presenting cells and T lymphocytes, which orientate and orchestrate the response, and sustained by effector cells such as mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. Among tissues and organs targeted by allergy, the nose, the lungs and the skin have the property to spread in distant sites the initially local reaction, thus resulting in systemic disease. By contrast, ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent form of cardiac arrhythmia. It is often related to diverse pathological conditions affecting the atria and leading to remodeling processes including collagen accumulation, fatty infiltration, and amyloid deposition. All these events generate atrial fibrosis, which contribute to beget AF. In this scenario, cardiac imaging appears as a promising noninvasive tool for monitoring the presence and degree of LA fibrosis and remodeling. The aim of this review ...
