Boron (B) or nitrogen (N) was co-doped with fluorine (F) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using a low cost and simplified one-pot hydrothermal treatment method avoiding complicated technology, such as gas phase deposition or high temperature pyrolysis method. X-ray photoelectron microscopy spectra revealed successful doping of heteroatoms into the rGO. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results demonstrated that high surface areas of B–F-rGO and N–F-rGO are favorable for O2 adsorption. Electrochemical evaluations ...

AbstractThe aim of this study was to assess hearing and hearing disorders among rock/jazz musicians. One hundred and thirty-nine (43 women and 96 men) musicians participated. The results are based on pure-tone audiometry and questionnaire responses. According to our definition of hearing loss, tinnitus, hyperacusis, distortion and/ or diplacusis as hearing disorders, we found disorders in 74% of the rock/jazz musicians studied. Hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis were most common, and the latter ...

Across ages and cultures, music's relationship to sexual allure and its adept capacity for invoking pleasure, eroticism, and desire are well established. Music's ability to arouse and channel sexual urges and desires renders it both a dynamic mode of gender and sexual signification and a putative agent of moral corruption. Music can convey coded sexual innuendo, give shape to a person's erotic agency, or constitute a significant part of their sexual identity. For some, listening to music may, in ...

This study explores the cognitive profiles of different types of expert musician adults, and suggests a frame of separation to categorize them according to the musical instrument they play. These differences would be based on the core elements of music (rhythm, melody and harmony), which activate the nervous system differently in expert adult musical performers. Several tests were applied, including executive function tasks such as verbal and visual-spatial working memory, cognitive inhibition, go/ ...

The widely overlapping physicochemical properties of lipoproteins (LPs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) represents one of the main obstacles for the isolation and characterization of these pervasive biogenic lipid nanoparticles. We herein present the application of an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based quantitative morphometry assay to the rapid nanomechanical screening of mixed LPs and EVs samples. The method can determine the diameter and the mechanical stiffness of hundreds of individual nanometric ...

One of the most interesting modern ‘borrowings’ of the famous ‘Dies irae’ chant comes within the Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola's Canti di Prigionia of 1938–1941. Written at a time of extreme political tension, the Canti were—from the composer's own testimony—a protest against Mussolini's introduction of the infamous racial laws in 1938. But while the composer's own hermeneutic proposes the ‘Dies irae’ as a symbolic representation of oppression overlaid onto a ‘purely’ dodecaphonic work, one senses ...

McKerrell, in ‘Towards Practice Research in Ethnomusicology’, advocates for performance to be used as ‘a central methodology’, as a ‘translation of artistic performance aesthetics’ and as a ‘research outcome sited in original performance’ (2019). The translational role for performance is demonstrated in this article through a practice-led investigation into the dynamic relationship between improvised music and dance. The research is based on the analysis of a live performance on Cuban television of ‘Los ...

This paper draws attention to the study of performance of a new Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) device, whose purpose is the early diagnosis of breast cancer, using Monte Carlo simulations. MBI provides functional and specific information that are more appropriated to dense breasts. Two asymmetric heads with different types of collimators, facing each other in anti-parallel viewing direction, characterize the system. Detectors and phantoms, together with the data taking procedure, are shortly reported. ...

Abstract We are developing a magnetic microscope, based on a micro SQUID sensor, with an integrated coil of 10 μm diameter. We present here the new features of this system. The scanning stage of the microscope is completely contained in a cryogenic environment and is activated by piezoelectric actuators of the bimorph type. A capacitive transducer of new design which has been designed and constructed in our laboratory, monitors the movement of the scanning stage. The capacitive transducer detects ...
