Abstract Mackenzie River discharge was at a record low in water year (WY) 1995 (October 1994 to September 1995), was near average in WY 1996, and was at a record high in WY 1997. The record high discharge in WY 1997, with above average flow each month, was followed by a record high flow in May 1998, then a sharp decline. Through diagnosing these changing flows and their expression in the Beaufort Sea via synthesis of observations and model output, this study provides insight into the nature of the ...

Abstract Building on the expertise from the Beaufort Weather Office, an objective method of identifying storm periods in the southern Beaufort Sea area based on surface wind speed criteria was developed. Algorithms that used hourly observations from Tuktoyaktuk and Sachs Harbour were trained to identify storm periods over the southern Beaufort Sea. The Master List produced by Eid and Cardone (1992) was used as a training set to tune the algorithms. A check with independent observations taken by a ...

Sea ice is a dynamic physical element of the greater Arctic marine system, one that has myriad connections to human systems on a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Changes to the spatial extent of sea ice simultaneously permits and endangers maritime operations, as well as impacts current debates over maritime boundaries, presenting an interesting challenge for international law. Sea ice is not a stationary object; it moves through time and space in response to the physical forces of wind, ...

Abstract The Beaufort Sea continental slope is disrupted by a belt of massive bedding‐plane slides and rotational slumps. This zone coincides with a region of sediment containing gas hydrate, an inclusion compound of gas and water. Quantitative studies suggest that elevated pore‐fluid pressures generated as a by‐product of gas hydrate disassociation during repeated episodes of eustatic sea level lowering during Pleistocene time were a major cause of these slides. Eustatic sea level fall causes reduced ...

From 1996 investigators of the Beaufort Inlet shipwreck, off North Carolina, USA, have suggested that the remains are those of the Queen Anne's Revenge, flagship of the pirate Blackbeard. Analysis of the published material, however, indicates that no concrete evidence has yet been found to support this identification and, moreover, shows a strong tendency towards Ruling Theory, whereby researchers seem to shape evidence to fit a pre-conceived identification. This article uses the Beaufort Inlet ...
