Objective We aim to develop and validate a clinical scoring system to predict the risks of colorectal neoplasia to better inform screening participants and facilitate their screening test choice. Design We recruited 5220 Chinese asymptomatic screening participants who underwent colonoscopy in Hong Kong during 2008–2012. From random sampling of 2000 participants, independent risk factors were evaluated for colorectal neoplasia, defined as adenoma, advanced neoplasia, colorectal cancer or any combination thereof ...

Background and study aims: Endoscopic therapy of upper gastrointestinal bleeding remains challenging with conventional endoscopic devices. Use of Hemospray, where a nanopowder with clotting abilities is sprayed onto the bleeding site, had been highly effective for management of arterial bleeding in a heparizined animal model. The safety and effectiveness of Hemospray for hemostasis of active peptic ulcer bleeding in humans was evaluated.

Significant lymph node shrinkage is common in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) throughout radiotherapy (RT) treatment, causing ill-fitted thermoplastic masks (IfTMs). To deal with this, an ad hoc adaptive radiotherapy (ART) may be required to ensure accurate and safe radiation delivery and to maintain treatment efficacy. Presently, the entire procedure for evaluating an eligible ART candidate is time-consuming, resource-demanding, and highly inefficient. In the artificial intelligence paradigm, ...

An essay by James Fraser (1997), who makes three references to the Tao Te Ching in his discussion of love and history in Freire's pedagogy, provides a helpful starting point for investigation. A new kaempferol glycoside, kaempferol-3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside-7-O-α-l-arabinofuranoside (1), was isolated from the EtOH extract of Pyrrosia petiolosa together with six known flavonoids already reported from the same plant. Structural elucidation was performed by means of physico-chemical methods including MS, and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy.

Chua Ching Lian, Francis Tang, Praveen Issac, Arun V. Krishnan,
We consider the problem of programming parallel applications for a Grid environment, in the presence of the two main challenges (i) high-latency communications and (ii) heterogeneity. We describe a new scripting language, GEL, whose semantics have been designed for execution on a heterogeneous, distributed computer. The language provides syntactic constructs for while loops, conditionals and explicitly parallel execution. The language is designed to work well given these two challenges, and to allow ...

To develop a fast-acting clot dissolving agent, a clot-targeting domain derived from the Kringle-1 domain in human plasminogen was fused to the C-terminal end of staphylokinase with a linker sequence in between. Production of this fusion protein inBacillus subtilis and Pichia pastoris was examined. The Kringle domain in the fusion protein produced fromB. subtilis was improperly folded because of its complicated disulfide-bond profile, whereas the staphylokinase domain produced from P. pastoris was ...

The biologically functional effect of eight kinds of hot-water extracts of shellfish on cultured human cell lines was examined in a serum-free medium model. Meretrix lusoria and Sinonovacula constricta extracts enhanced IgM secretion of both hybridoma HB4C5 and SI102 cells when cultured with the respective extracts. The purified principle exhibited remarked activity in the adsorbed fraction in hydroxyapatite and Concanavalin A columns. The extracts of Corbicula fluminea, Crassostreas gigas, Meretrix ...
