ABSTRACT Of all the edible oils, only that produced from olives has had its health attributes studied in detail. For maximum nutritional benefit, an edible oil should contain minimal levels of saturated fats, especially lauric and myristic acids and minimal levels of trans fatty acids. If the oils are not to be heated repeatedly and if they contain high levels of antioxidants, they should contain omega‐3 and possibly omega‐6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The fatty acid profile should be dominated ...

Novel indole-3-heterocycles were designed and synthesized and found to be potent CB1 receptor agonists. Starting from a microsomally unstable lead 1, a bioisostere approach replacing a piperazine amide was undertaken. This was found to be a good strategy for improving stability both in vitro and in vivo. This led to the discovery of 24, which had an increased duration of action in the mouse tail flick test in comparison to the lead 1.

Novel, low brain penetrant, orally bioavailable CB1 receptor agonists were designed starting from a mature lead series of potent brain penetrant CB1 receptor agonists. Increasing the calculated polar surface area was found to be a good strategy for reducing brain penetration whilst retaining drug-like properties. This in silico approach led to the discovery of LBP1, an orally bioavailable, low brain penetrant CB1 receptor agonist with robust activity in rodent models of neuropathic pain and a good ...

Describes the development of a course on learning organizations for Auckland Business School. Gives a number of different uses of the phrase “learning organization” and outlines three types of learning: individual; collective; and deutero. Presents a summary of the literature on organizational learning and outlines three core elements which are considered to be essential: strategy; knowledge; and leadership. Discusses the major themes of the course, dealing with the basic concepts of learning in ...

Fascin is an actin binding and bundling protein that is not expressed in normal epithelial tissues but overexpressed in a variety of invasive epithelial tumors. It has a critical role in cancer cell metastasis by promoting cell migration and invasion. Here we report the crystal structures of fascin in complex with a series of novel and potent inhibitors. Structure-based elaboration of these compounds enabled the development of a series with nanomolar affinities for fascin, good physicochemical properties ...

Novel tricyclic indole-3-carboxamides were synthesized as structurally restricted analogs of bicyclic indoles, and found to be potent CB1 cannabinoid receptor agonists. The CB1 agonist activity depended on the absolute configuration of the chiral center of the tricyclic ring. The preferred enantiomer was more potent than the structurally unconstrained lead compound. Structure–activity relationships in the amide side chain of the indole C-3 position were also investigated.

[2]Benzopyrano[3,4-c]pyrroles were synthesized via an intramolecular hetero Diels–Alder reaction. The reaction was applicable to a wide range of substrates and the products could be easily converted into serotonin 5-HT2C receptor agonists.

Stuart Francis, Patrick Alley,

Describes a business process re‐engineering project in the department of surgery of a publicly‐funded hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. Through the creation of an internal marketing approach, by splitting the health system into purchaser and provider elements, the need to refocus on service provision became very apparent. Patient focus review teams were put together to analyse internal processes. Discusses in detail the outcomes of the review, highlighting the need for further changes and setting ...
