Sulfur (S) can play essential roles in protecting plants against abiotic stress, including heavy metal toxicity. However, the effect of this nutrient on plants exposed to barium (Ba) is still unknown. This study was designed to evaluate the S supply on oxidative stress and the antioxidant system of Tanzania guinea grass under exposure to Ba, grown in a nutrient solution under greenhouse conditions. It was studied the influence of S/Ba combinations in nutrient solution on oxidative stress indicators ( ...

Innate immune status of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus population from two different rocky shore beaches in the northern Portuguese coast was evaluated for a period of one year. Although some ecological studies regarding the effect of toxics on the immune parameters of the sea urchin were made in Portuguese waters, there is a current lack of knowledge concerning their immune status all over the year. In perspective of a changing ecosystem in these waters due to global warming and colonization ...

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection still causes significant morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Therefore, it is extremely important to diagnosis and monitor active CMV infection in HSCT patients, defining the CMV DNA levels of virus replication that warrant intervention with antiviral agents in order to accurately prevent CMV disease and further related complications.During the first 150 days after allogeneic HSTC, thirty patients were monitored ...

We assess the cyclicality of fiscal policy in the 19 Euro area countries, notably during recessions, for the period 1995–2020. We use a time-varying measure of fiscal cyclicality to describe fiscal policy developments. The results suggest that during recessions discretionary fiscal policy becomes more pro-cyclical, but the overall budget balance becomes more counter-cyclical. Hence, pursuing a Ricardian fiscal regime by more indebted countries leads to higher counter-cyclicality of fiscal policy. ...

Most pathogens start the process of infection at the mucosal surfaces and therefore the mucosal immune response plays an essential role in the course of the infection. Due to the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis Kaup) condition of flatfish, the present comparative study aimed to analyse several immune-related enzymes as well as the bactericidal activity in the skin mucus from ocular and blind sides. For this purpose, Senegalese sole juveniles were bath challenged with a sub-lethal dose of Tenacibaculum ...

Academic literature has reflected increasing concerns about the trade-off between preserving the environment and economic growth. To address these concerns, new measurements are needed to evaluate sustainable development, given the limitations of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in quantifying welfare and sustainability. Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) is one of those alternative measurements. This paper assesses sustainable development for 28 OECD countries by computing a comparable GPI. Two different ...

Purpose This study compares signs, symptoms and predictive tools used to diagnose dry eye disease (DED) and ocular surface disorders in six systemic well-defined and non-overlapping diseases. It is well known that these tests are problematic because of a lack of agreement between them in identifying these conditions. Accordingly, we provide here a comparative clinical profile analysis of these different diseases. Methods A spontaneous and continuous sample of patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) ( ...

Immune responses relies on an adequate provision of multiple nutrients that sustain the synthesis of key effector molecules. These needs are depicted in the already reported increase of circulating free amino acids in fish under stressful conditions. Since aquaculture and the inherent fish welfare are an emergent call, the immunomodulatory effects of amino acids on gut- and skin-associated lymphoid tissues of the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were studied under unstressed conditions and ...

Abstract Introduction Endothelial barrier breakdown is a hallmark of septic shock, and proteins that physiologically regulate endothelial barrier integrity are emerging as promising biomarkers of septic shock development. Patients with cancer and febrile neutropenia (FN) present a higher risk of sepsis complications, such as septic shock. Nonetheless, these patients are normally excluded or under-represented in sepsis biomarker studies. The aim of our study was to validate the measurement of a panel ...

Today, people have increasingly demanded more from the state and enterprises. Consumer satisfaction is not an organizational option, but rather a matter of survival for any institution. The quest for measurement of consumer satisfaction has been ongoing in many areas of research, and researchers have concentrated efforts to demonstrate the psychometric quality of their measurements. However, the techniques employed by these commitments have not kept pace with the advances in psychometric theory ...

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the major complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and cytokines are recognized as important mediators of GVHD. Polymorphisms in the regulatory regions of several cytokine genes have been associated with a number of immune diseases as well as organ transplant complications. In this study we have investigated the role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha(-308), interleukin (IL)-6(-174), IL-10(-1082, -819, -592), Interferon-gamma(-874), and ...
