The Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 rkp-1 region, which is involved in capsular polysaccharides (KPS) production, was isolated and sequenced. The organization of the S. fredii genes identified, rkpUAGHIJ and kpsF3, was identical to that described for S. meliloti 1021 but different from that of S. meliloti AK631. The long rkpA gene (7.5 kb) of S. fredii HH103 and S. meliloti 1021 appears as a fusion of six clustered AK631 genes, rkpABCDEF. S. fredii HH103-Rif(r) mutants affected in rkpH or rkpG were constructed. ...

The crystal structure of La2LiSbO6 has been refined by neutron diffraction at 295 K.This compound adopts a distorted perovskite structure with an ordered distribution of Li and Sb atoms in B-sites and the La atoms are located in A-sites. The tilting of (Sb, Li)O6 octahedra is responsible of the irregular coordination in the LaO8 polyhedra. The bond valence calculations for metal atoms are in agreement with the experimental bond distances.

Abstract Between 1996 and 1998, 580 litres of milk in Mexico were surveyed for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and its metabolite aflatoxicol (AFL), which are mutagenic and carcinogenic mycotoxins that interconvert AFB1–AFL–AFB1. The seven most consumed brands from different regions of Mexico included pasteurized and ultrapasteurized milk with four different fat levels: whole fat (28–33 g l−1), half-skimmed (10–20 g l−1), light (1–4 g l−1) and with vegetable oil (33 g l−1). Aflatoxins in each sample were concentrated ...

Abstract The effect of two titanium (IV) compounds, titanium ascorbate and titanium chloride, on some enzymatic activities, such as catalase, peroxidase, lipoxygenase and nitrate reductase in seeds, embryos, and seedlings and adult plants of red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), was studied. A stimulatory effect of titanium was observed for every iron‐depending enzyme studied at all developing stages as well as for nitrate reductase but only for whole plants. This occurs because Ti+3/Ti+4 catalizes the ...

SummaryPaprika pepper (Capsicum annuum, L., cv. Negral) plants grown in a greenhouse were supplied Ti(IV) ascorbate through the roots or through leaves. Biomass production, peroxidase (donor: H2O, oxidoreductase; EC 1.11.1.7) activity, and malic acid, starch and chlorophyll concentrations were determined in different plant organs. It was observed that Ti increased the concentration of some of the metabolites studied and promoted both peroxidase activity and biomass production. The profitable effect ...

ABSTRACT N -Acetylneuraminate lyases (NALs) or sialic acid aldolases catalyze the reversible aldol cleavage of N -acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) to form pyruvate and N -acetyl- d -mannosamine (ManNAc). In nature, N -acetylneuraminate lyase occurs mainly in pathogens. However, this paper describes how an N -acetylneuraminate lyase was cloned from the human gut commensal Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 (LpNAL), overexpressed, purified, and characterized for the first time. This novel enzyme, which reaches a high ...

Abstract This paper introduces a supervised learning method for finding diagnostic regions of interest in histopathological images. The method is based on the cognitive process of visual selection of relevant regions that arises during a pathologist's image examination. The proposed strategy emulates the interaction of the visual cortex areas V 1, V 2 and V 4, being the V 1 cortex responsible for assigning local levels of relevance to visual inputs while the V 2 cortex gathers together these small ...

Abstract The SART (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling and Thickening) process is a novel industrial technology used in gold mining to recover cyanide and copper from cyanide solutions. Since the operation of this process involves hydrogen cyanide (HCN) generation, the design of the process must provide full control on gaseous HCN evolution to ensure personnel safety. Even though gas extraction and scrubber systems play a fundamental role in the control and reduction of potentially dangerous ...

As mitochondrial Ca(2+) overload is a main inductor of mPTP opening, we examined the effect of Ru(360), a selective inhibitor of the mitochondrial calcium uptake system against myocardial damage induced by reperfusion in a rat model.Myocardial reperfusion injury was induced by a 5-min occlusion of the ...

Zucchini fruit is susceptible to develop chilling injuries (CI) when stored at low temperature. In this study, the effects of a preconditioning treatment during cold storage and its relation with the physiological response to chilling tolerance have been investigated. The commercial variety Sinatra, whose fruit are very sensitive to cold storage, has been used. After harvest, fruit were kept at 4°C or preconditioned during 48 h at 15°C before cold storage. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a key phytohormone in the regulation of most stress responses, which especially involve dehydration such as drought, high salinity, and low temperature. Under these stress conditions, plants accumulate ABA that triggers a response to cope with the adverse environment. For that, we have analyzed ABA biosynthesis and response in fruit of two varieties ...

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging flavivirus transmitted generally by mosquitoes of Culex genus. It is maintained in an enzootic life cycle where birds act as reservoir hosts. Humans and horses are also susceptible to infection, and occasionally, they suffer from neurological complications. However, they do not transmit the virus to other vectors, behaving as dead-end hosts. Sporadic WNV outbreaks observed in horses and wild birds from Extremadura (western Spain) during 2016 and 2017 seasons prompted ...

Studies of rapid (N-type) inactivation induced by different synthetic inactivating peptides in several voltage-dependent cation channels have concluded that the channel inactivation "entrance" (or "receptor" site for the inactivating peptide) consists of a hydrophobic vestibule within the internal mouth of the channel, separated from the cytoplasm by a region with a negative surface potential. These protein domains are conformed from alternative sequences in the different channels and thus are relatively ...
