Abstract The molar mass of the polyurethanes (PUs)' reagents directly influences their thermal response, affecting both the polymerization process and the enthalpy and the degree of reaction. This study reports applying an artificial neural network (ANN), associated with surface response methodology (SRM) models, to predict the calorimetric behavior of certain PU's bulk polymerizations. A noncatalyzed reaction between an aliphatic hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and a polycarbonate diol (PCD) with distinct ...

In this study, we aimed to determine the hospitalization rates of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in a southern-european country and its associated charges over a period of 16 years. We identified all discharges with a primary diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) between 2000 and 2015 in data provided by the Central Administration of Health Services (ACSS). National estimates of hospitalization rates were assessed and adjusted to gender, age, population, and hospitalizations. ...

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects people from all age categories worldwide. Although the incidence of the disease is stabilizing or decreasing in most Western world countries, its prevalence is still increasing because of the rise in life expectancy and better disease management. This work intends to identify the trends related to IBD incidence nationwide, analyzing regional, sex, and age distributions. METHODS: Data were provided by the Portuguese Shared Services of the Ministry ...

Alimentary habits of free-living Psittaciformes vary significantly among different species. Amazona pretrei is under risk of extinction and has very specific free-living dietary habits, which are based on Paraná pine seeds. Hemosiderosis is a pathologic process characterized by intracellular accumulation of iron without other evident lesions. It is associated with increased prevalence of infections, neoplasms, and hepatopathies. The purpose of this study was to quantify hepatic hemosiderin deposits ...

Trichomonas vaginalis is the aetiological agent of human trichomoniasis, which is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases in humans. Iron is an important element for the survival of this parasite and the colonisation of the host urogenital tract. In this study, we investigated the effects of iron on parasite proliferation in the dynamics of pseudocyst formation and morphologically characterised iron depletion-induced pseudocysts. We performed structural and ultrastructural analyses ...

Bones are widely innervated, suggesting an important role for the sympathetic regulation of bone metabolism, although there are controversial studies. We investigated the effects of propranolol in a model of experimental periodontal disease.Rats were assigned as follows: animals without ligature; ligated animals receiving vehicle and ligated animals receiving 0.1, 5 or 20 mg·kg(-1) propranolol. After 30 days, haemodynamic parameters were measured by cardiac catheterization. Gingival tissues were ...

Neo-blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), which may involve the activation of pre-existing endothelial cells (EC) and/or the recruitment of bone marrow-derived vascular precursor cells (BM-VPC), is essential for tumor growth. Molecularly, besides the well established roles for Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), recent findings show the Notch signalling pathway, in particular the ligand Delta-like 4 (Dll4), is also essential for adequate tumor angiogenesis; Dll4 inhibition results in impaired, non- ...

Additionally, a chemical fractionation guided by cytotoxicity combined with spectrometric ...

The positive regulation of insulin pathway in skeletal muscle results in increased activity of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a positive effector of mRNA translation rate and protein synthesis. Studies that assess the activity of this protein in response to chronic high-fat diet (HFD) are scarce and controversial, and to date, there are no studies evaluating the mTOR pathway in infants exposed to gestational and postgestational HFD. This study investigated the effect of maternal HFD on ...

Trypanosoma brucei is an extracellular parasite that causes sleeping sickness. In mammalian hosts, trypanosomes are thought to exist in two major niches: early in infection, they populate the blood; later, they breach the blood-brain barrier. Working with a well-established mouse model, we discovered that adipose tissue constitutes a third major reservoir for T. brucei. Parasites from adipose tissue, here termed adipose tissue forms (ATFs), can replicate and were capable of infecting a naive animal. ...

Hemorrhagic cystitis is the main adverse effect associated with the clinical use of oxazaphosphorine, resulting in increased oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines, which culminate in injury of the bladder tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of isopropyl gallate (IPG) against ifosfamide (IFOS)-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in mice. The induction of the hemorrhagic cystitis model was carried out using a single dose of IFOS (400 mg/kg, i.p.) four hours after oral ...

Abstract Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder of lipid metabolism caused by pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in LDLR , APOB and PCSK9 genes. Variants in FH-phenocopy genes ( LDLRAP1 , APOE , LIPA , ABCG5 , ABCG8 ), polygenic hypercholesterolemia and hyper-Lp(a) can also mimic a clinical FH phenotype. We aim to present a new diagnostic tool to unravel the genetic background of clinical FH phenotype. Biochemical and genetic study was performed in 1005 individuals with clinical diagnosis of ...
